This is a comparison video between FA-50 vs F-16 fighting falcon fighter jets, data that is used in this video are publicly available official data.
The KAI T-50 Golden Eagle (골든이글) is a family of South Korean supersonic advanced jet trainers and light combat aircraft, developed by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) with Lockheed Martin. The T-50 is South Korea's first indigenous supersonic aircraft and one of the world's few supersonic trainers. Development began in the late 1990s, and its maiden flight occurred in 2002. The aircraft entered active service with the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) in 2005.
The T-50 has been further developed into aerobatic and combat variants, namely T-50B, TA-50, and FA-50. FA-50 is a single-seat multirole fighter variant
The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force. Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,600 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976.] Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are being made for export customers.
The Fighting Falcon's key features include a frameless bubble canopy for better visibility, a side-mounted control stick to ease control while maneuvering, an ejection seat reclined 30 degrees from vertical to reduce the effect of g-forces on the pilot, and the first use of a relaxed static stability/fly-by-wire flight control system that helps to make it an agile aircraft. The F-16's official name is "Fighting Falcon", but "Viper" is commonly used by its pilots and crews, due to a perceived resemblance to a viper snake as well as the Colonial Viper starfighter on Battlestar Galactica which aired at the time the F-16 entered service.

S Korea also uses FA50 for ground attack with anti tank cluster bombs CBU100 which has lower maintenance costs and free up other 4.5 and 5th generation fighter for air to air and other multirole duties. Maintaining a large air force will require high and low fighters to deal with different missions. You can't just field all 5th generation or 4.5 generation for every duties. European countries doesn't make cluster bombs anymore. Only the US and S Korea still makes cluster bombs to deal with bigger wars. Major draw backs buying fighters from European countries is that they are very expensive to operate and parts are not plentiful to deal with sudden attack. Germany's 95% Eurofighters are on the ground waiting for parts. Getting aircraft parts from Italy is also challenging as Poland experienced from buying M346 trainers.

Calling the FA-50 a 4.5 generation fighter and trying to make it sound more advanced than the F-16 is quite silly. It’s a modified trainer jet repurposed as a light attack aircraft.

In all honesty, you are right. But it's a ¾-sized early model F16 that's gun and missile equipped, that can fire air-to-air as well as air-to-ground missiles and deliver precision bombs at much lower operating costs. It may not matter to EU or the US, but lower operating costs means they can be used more frequently. Plus the fact that routine QRAs need not be passed to more sophisticated or heavier aircraft like the F15 or F35.

Dude, you have obviously been misinformed about it perhaps by TH-camrs or small medias overly proud of their acquisition of FA-50. Korea does not define FA-50 but KF-21 as 4.5Gen. First of all, Korean military fans would be uprising if the company ever introduce the jet as 4.5Gen. Also Koreans would be feeling disgraceful and really ashamed of scamming the clients, just like some other country were trying to sell off unfinished products with full of fancy words. For example, early batches of Su-35, Rafale, and F-35As.

Your information is out of date. The Poland and Malaysia both bought Block 20 version which is an upgraded version of FA-50. The Block 20 essentially upgrades the FA-50 with additional gear from Lockheed Martin F-16 parts shelf so that it will only be second to F-16Viper. A new AESA radar, sniper targeting pod for precision weapons, longer range missiles (thanks to AESA radar), air-refueling, single-seat configuration, etc. While waiting in line for 6-8 years for a brand new F-16V, you can buy Block 20 version FA-50 and have delivered in 2 years or less to get used to flying and training. Once F-16V is delivered in 6-7 years, it will only take FA-50 pilots 6 hours of additional training to switch over to the F-16V. All the pilot cockpit instrumentation is essentially the same (controls are same also).

    Wow…
    So many factual errors….
Both costs does not reflect any updates or upgrades.
F16V’s current program cost is well above $90m (with some add-ons, easily above $100m).
FA50 PL or Block20 program cost is $50-55m depending on the add-ons. KAI deliberately tries to keep the price at half the cost of F16.
FA50 and Block10 was PESA radar, only from Block20 AESA radar is to be installed.
There is an agreement with KAI and Lockheed Martin that FA50 upgrades will not exceed the performance of F16 operated by Korean Airforce. As Korean Air Force is getting their upgrade for F16U, FA50 is allowed to be upgraded to a similar level as F16V (but obviously due to much smaller airframe, the range, weapon load, hard points etc will always be less than F16).
They are different categories. It is like comparing feather weight vs heavy weight champions.

FA-50 designed to get a 70% performance of F-16. FA-50 is acceptable for short CAS mission and middle-low intensity conflict, but not a alternative jet of F-16. FA-50 has almost same system with F-16, so it is great tranning jet for F-16. Dont need to waste F-16 for trainning mission.

I notice you left out some very important specifications, like thrust to weight ratio, payload, missile ranges, etc. The FA-50 is a trainer/light combat aircraft. The F-16 is a true, multi-role, front line fighter.
The FA-50 excels at purchase price and cost of ownership. The $30 million/unit price you used is from 2012, and Poland is paying $50m USD/aircraft for its current order. F-16 prices vary greatly, as do SAAB Gripen prices. The Gripen is the cheapest, Western made, frontline fighter to operate. The FA-50 is cheaper still, but much less capable.
The FA-50 may soon face stiff competition from a fighter/attack version (F/T-7X) of the Boeing/SAAB T-7A Red Hawk, which beat out the Korean jet for the USAF T-X contract.

Profits from MRO (maintenance, repair and operation) is played by all weapons manufacturers but KAI charges waaaaayyyyyy less than what Lockheed Martin charges for the F-16s/F-35s. F-35 costs $42,000 for every hour in the air. F-16 costs $22,000 for every hour in the air. FA-50 costs less than $8,000 for every hour in the air and have higher MCR percentage above 90%. F-16 has around 70% MCR and don't even ask about F-35... due to stealth maintenance it is around 40% MCR on a good day.

    • @jwb1227
      @jwb1227 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@will5989 Not sure. MRO is a VARIABLE cost so hard to nail down a fixed cost like the initial per unit cost of the aircraft. Because of the huge different in MRO, the longer you use the FA-50 Block 20 (next upgraded version sold to Poland and Malaysia is better than F-16 Block 50 and almost equals Block 60) for its estimated life, it will be lower in total cost of ownership than F-16. Cost less to buy and costs less to operate... but this is not a competition since FA-50, F-16 and F-35 are all Lockheed Martin family and are designed to work together in High/Mid/Low operation. Having FA-50 extends the useful service lives of both F-35 and F-16 which is why both U.S. Air Force and Navy are looking at the FA-50 for its own use.
