Sir what is the distance from neck to First position could you explain , Is that All the other positions are same ? I bought a cello and learning with a teacher but still I am not able to keep correct position
If playing a 4/4 cello is really uncomfortable for small hands with early arthritis, should I keep doing "therapy" to try to make these fingers reach? Or, should I instead consider getting a 7/8 cello and being a little kinder to my digits? Since I'm almost 5'8", everyone said to go with the 4/4, but at 55, my hands are not going to be getting any larger or my fingers any longer. Decisions, decisions. :|
Well… depends. I would need to see your left hand. There are videos on the channel here about elbow height and adjusting it to fit your hand size. Smaller handed people are elbow low people. Not touching your side but low. This helps the hand open up. Regardless of hand size, your thumb must be behind your second finger in order to allow the hand open up properly. This is non negotiable for big and small hands. Double check your thumb placement double check your elbow height and let me know.
@@thecelloonline TY for the response. I had already made the elbow height adjustment and even have a tiny tactile marker on the back of the cello's neck for the thumb in first position. I'm thinking maybe I need to just break down and get myself to a shop where I can get my hand on a 7/8, literally. Tisk-tisk, it's like sending a diabetic into a candy store. LOL I just want to make sure I don't add to the ravages of time by trying to force my fingers and possibly accelerating damage to the joints. After all, I want to be able to play for many years to come. Sucks to get old.
When drawing the bow the sound is more drawn out and you can hear the whole note. When you pluck it is not only quieter but also that it is not a consistent volume that makes it harder to tell

Weird, I find plucking to be more forgiving than using the bow. I'm sure my bow technique needs a lot of help though.
