    I love good takes on the psychology and characterization of ghosts. It's always been obvious to me that the real horror inherent in the concept isn't that you might encounter one, but that you might end up trapped as one, perhaps forever.

      A terrifying thought, indeed.

    • @michaelkottler
      @michaelkottler ปีที่แล้ว

      Perspicacious and more than a little pedantic, a statement of your authority to discern "good takes" and the true terror of the ghost concept being one you've been familiar with from birth, ideas you've expressed at every opportunity from the moment you actually first conceived of or were introduced to the idea of being eternally condemned to ghost-hood. College papers, parties, conversations with potential romantic partners and every other conceivable social, academic or other context: in all, at every opportunity, you've repeated the above to desired effect. And I think that's dope AF. So, well done and best wishes for your continued social success, sense of personal efficacy and well-justified feelings of self-satisfaction.

    When he wrote "A burst for speed", "I put the highest speed" he probably meant something around 20 km/h.
    Nice story! Very well-read. I wonder if it was the source of urban legends about meetings with the dead.

      Actually, those old Model-T can go as fast as 120 Miles/hr on flat grade. They just have slower acceleration and weaker pull than modern cars. With the car going down road, his car might be going really fast. Take note a Horse can run 40 M/hr.
      I remember a E.F. Benson ghost story that discussed a major portion of the story of them driving very fast in the English country roads.

    I think the big mystery here is whether the "hopping" stone had any relation to the tragedy of the boy and the hog -- or, rather, which came first. It seems more likely to me that the white stone was older, perhaps a standing stone from the neolithic, and it was a source of bad luck to those who lived near it.

    When this story came out, my grandfather was 5 years old, although as he lived in Iowa on a farm at the time, I doubt they got Smith's Magazine. He did tell me a story about when his father came home with a motor car when he was a young boy. He heard it coming down the road and had no idea what it was, ao he hid in the forest with his pony. The rest of the family got rides, and he never got to see it up close. That was young Herbert Fawkes.

Now in final and absolute despair Carter groped clumsily and painfully, with spastic fingers for the gas tap and opened it.

    Interesting. Decades ago I read a story about a man driving down a dark desolate road when saw a young woman walking alone. He stopped to see if she needed help. She told him she was trying to get home. He invited her in the car and asked where she lived. She told him and they went on their way. She was wearing a dress the color of lavender. When he reached the address given to him by the girl he discovered that she was gone .
    She couldn't have got out of the car as he would have heard her open the door.
    He inquired at the house about her and found out that they knew her. Her name was Lavender and she was killed in an accident on that very road.
    Now, I don't know if this story is a work of fiction or an account of a real event.
    Fascinating.
    The name of the story was Lavender.
