Both take great photos. I picked the 5D MKII because it's a more modern version of the 5DC. I loved my first 5D MKII so much I bought a second one. Bow I have two! Can't say enough good things about this camera. I owe it all to you Martin and your channel!
Thanks for the video. I've been using 5d mk2 for many years and I loved it but I found low ISO to be very limiting so I upgraded recently to R6 mk2 and I'm blown away! Great performance, highly recommend upgrading
Would love to see comparison where someone shoots same model and same landscape using same EF lens. 5D, 5D II, 5D III, 5D IV, 5Dsr, R5 and R5 II (EF - RF adapter) Same standard jpeg, no editing whatsoever. Would be interesting to see how Canon color science has changed through all these years and how different sensors "render" images differently.
Beautiful photos, mate ! Own the 5D Mk I/II/III and D700 for many years now. Loving them all for their different characters and till date I still use them on a regular basis alongside my modern Sony.
I wanted to ask you because I miss my 5d mark i, but I want video so 5d mark ii, but then I don’t like cf cards so 6d but then I don’t like the way the 6d grip feels in the hand I love the feeling of the 5d mark iii but then I might as well go find a used 5d4 because of auto focus but then there’s no flipping screen 😅so then 6d mark 2 but then might as well get the eos R but that’s still over priced so might as well get the r8 😢so now I don’t know what to do I was trying to save money but still be nostalgic about my first full frame canon the 5d mark I ❤😢 help me
As soon as video comes into the game go mirrorless unless it’s just a few clips. Mirrorless is where video really works. So either that or a 5d ii and find a different solution for video.
@@LouisLuzuka yeah i mean they CAN do video but really its just so basic compared to what mirrorless can do its like using a pogo stick compared to a car. Unless you are into pogo sticks. THis is a dillema I have right now, mirrorless would make the channel much easier to film on location if i were shooting with a mirrorless too.
I sold the 5Dii and now I’m happy with my 5D classic, 6D and 30D, which is great when I need more reach with my Telelenses. Fantastic cameras for different purposes. 6D paired with 40/2.8 is the perfect street combo and the 5D I for landscapes. I got the lenses for cheap too. I also like the fact that I can use them without worrying in rough conditions.
When I was seeing lots of TH-camrs extolling the virtues of the 5Dc, and I was seriously interested in owing one, it was your videos and approaches and experience that convinced me to get one. No regrets at all. Seriously seriously good camera. Off the back of that I bagged a 5Dii super cheap as the USB doesn’t work. Again, a seriously good investment. Of the two, I prefer the 5Dc for the render, but very happy with both.
I’m picking up my 5D classic from the repair shop tomorrow. A nasty drop onto a concrete sidewalk dislodged the focus LEDs. They were lighting up but not visible in the viewfinder. Everything else is working fine. Cost of repair is $50, soooo worth it. The rear screen has been buggered for chimping purposes a few years now, but I really don’t care about that. The menus and histogram work fine, so I really only rely on the histo to verify exposure results. The colour output of this camera truly is remarkable! The anticipation of finally seeing my shooting results on the computer is actually a little refreshing and exciting. Thanks for your wonderful videos Martin.
I’ve tried really premium lenses and always thought the difference wasn’t worth it. In comparison, when I first tried the 5d Classic I couldn’t believe how much I liked the output. I’ve adjusted some of the hex screws under the mirror to get rid of focus shift. It’s easy to do for manual focus but harder to do for auto focus. More details on this in the 5D Classic fan club group on Facebook. I’ve sold my RF lenses and only use EF lenses now that work well on the 5D Classic.

@@jfhector I need to find a detailed list somewhere. I've tried the Ef 35mm f2 non is and it's dead accurate and also very fast. The 24-105 f4 is accurate but bad lens overall. The Tamron 28-300 pzd with stabilizer is accurate as well. 50mm f1.8 stm of course is accurate. Canon 28-135mm usm is accurate and good as well. But i am glad that you find the 50mm f1.2 accurate. Can you tell me a bit more about this lens on the 5D? Is it sharp at f1.2? Thanks again
@ I’ve only played with the 50 1.2 for a few minutes. I’m not 100% sure it’s accurate but it seemed to be on the centre focus point. I recommend you check out the other videos by Martin on the 5D. One of them has a list of lenses that worked well for him. I believe it may be in a video comparing the 5d to another camera.
I’m bought the 6D for the 5D colours -ish with the modern features of the 5dii and iii such as micro adjust I truly think that canon is missing out on so many sales of a 6Diii with the R6 sensor … literally a competitor to the D780 which I plan on buying but I’d love those 5D colours 😊
Always love your video’s Martin. Why I prefer the Mark II: - AF MicroAdjustment - Sensorcleaning - Battery management (you can keep this camera ON in savings mode for a week & more) - Weathersealing Why I prefer the Mark I: - fantastic for portraits - smaller files - better sound
Hi Martin I have followed you for a while now, and love your views on photography and all of your advices. I have owned so many cameras over the last 9 years I have had everything from Canon 500D to Sony A7Riii . I see many recommending the Canon 5D mark 1 for beginners. I decided to buy it, and it definitely isn't the camera to beginners. The lack of features means you actually know what to do. I really love the organic look of the pictures. If you want a beginner camera I would go with the Canon 500D for example, it has features but not too much to be distracting, I did some street photography yesterday, and as I managed to get photos, it requires you to slow down and you constantly have to change settings. ASo you have to think fast, and therefore know your settings. But images out of camera inspires me more than my Sony which is so clinical. Ps. Really love your photogrphy work too, very inspirering! Thank you
I own two 5D Mk I bodies and used them as a wedding photographer until a couple of years ago. Now I shoot mainly with a 6D Mk I for comfort reasons with some features like auto ISO, autofocus, processing speed and screen usability, while keeping a moderate resolution hat I like and good image quality for general photography. Greetings and thank you for sharing your knowledge and fine artwork.
Excellent video as usual, so thank you for that . however what was missing to me is a straight comparison of the same let’s say portrait with the same lighting with the same lens just different bodies ( 5D Mark one and 5D mark two) just to see the difference. By the way, I own 5D Mark three and love it. Night and day compare to my R6.
I love the look of those 5D I and II images! May I ask whether you have a preferred Canon Picture Style for those occasions when you should JPEG please, Martin? I tend to use Neutral to facilitate some post processing when doing general travel photography with my 6D, but I also like just Standard with Contrast -1 and Saturation +1
When I was shopping around for a 5D mark II, I dropped by the local camera store and had the opportunity to buy a 5D classic with an 85mm f/1.8 bundled with it. Now after watching this video I almost wish I had just bought that and saved again for a mark II because the output from the 2 bodies really complement each other nicely. I don't regret getting the mark II, but maybe one day I'll find a classic to add to my collection. The mark II really does look different, I've pretty much gone from using my 80D with the kit 18-135mm or 10-22mm to exclusively shooting with the 5D mark II with a cheap 50mm f/1.8 because of that vibrant, punchy look. Comparing images with the exact same settings, the 80D looks quite full and that's why I'm selling it with the 2 EF-S lenses. I think I'm going to try to get a 24-70L II and the original 70-200, or look for some Sigma or Tamron glass to add to my 50 f/1.8. Martin, if you are reading this, what are your thoughts? I'm kind of torn between 24-105 f/4 and 85 prime or 24-70 f/2.8 and something telephoto.
Great as always, loves your simple and engaging ways of describing things. And your editing of the files 💚 Quick question - I'm looking into getting a full frame Canon DSLR. Had more or less decided me for a 6D. I'm doing landscape, mostly woodland and a lot of night photography (kind of astro). Would you recommend 6D or 5D Mark II?
I have a 5dii and a 6d as a result of following your channel! Very happy with both, and they complement each other well, both have strengths and weaknesses. I do prefer the 5dii for landscapes, despite the limited dynamic range. Am thinking of adding a 7d mark ii for wildlife photography with higher frame rate and good autofocus. Can anyone please tell me about the rendering and colours of the 7d mark ii? Thanks.
My 5Dmk1 is the only DSLR I will never sell. It's a historic camera that still delivers results. I'll probably keep my 6D as well because it's worth more to me than its market price. Beyond that I'm looking at the R6mk2 as a do-it-all machine and trading my 5DSR to get one. I have no love at all for the 5DSR. It's a tool. It's fairly characterless and excels at the sort of photography I'm not interested in.
Hi Martin, thank you for another informative video. As film shooter since the 80s, when I worked as a news photographer, I was interested to hear you mention film in this one, specifically and its ability to record a more three dimensional aesthetic. Have you shot film before? And if so, do you still? All the very best, Mahavan
Your videos are the best Martin. I have been trying to get a mk2 for quite awhile. I had one saved at my camera shop but personal things happened and I missed out, what a shame the camera looked brand new. I won't quit searching. Thanks again great video.
I'm starting to think about getting an older full frame. I got my 77D because of the flip out screen, which I use a lot, but I'd like to see what full frame feels like. I often want a wider view and can't back up.
I am a life long Nikon SLR/DSLR shooter, dove into fuji for 11 years, back to Nikon, Bit almost a year ago I decided to get a Canon just for the fun of it and for something new to me. It was between these two cameras but in the end decided on the 5D Mark II for the same reasons mentioned. Quite the ergonomics learning curve but fun nonetheless, and fantastic renderings. I find myself putting it in my backpack on almost a daily basis and getting great shots throughout my day.
Hi Martin! When you speak of colors, contrast and general look of these cameras are you referring to the JPEG output or the processed RAW files? While I understand how JPEG output can vary between generations and one look can appeal more than the other, I wonder to what extent this still applies to processed RAW files, as this depends on how the software is interpreting them. It could be a boring video to some but I'd be interested to see a side by side between JPEGs and processed raw files from different camera models.
Hi Martin , . My 5d mark 2 arrived and images look great , but after inspection on camera it has small amount of dust on top plate lcd (under glass cover) sensor , mirror box and reflex mirror look fine , but I wonder if weather sealing has been compromised somehow , does look like it's every been taken apart and performs perfect. What's your opinion, should I send it back or ignore it and just use it ? Thanks and hope you don't mind me asking 🙂
Im not an expert on the hardware side like this, like I cant repair cameras etc, but I think that if there is dust under the lcd screen then the weather sealing is probably compromised.
Thanks for the video Martin, I have both, I think I favor the classic, bought one when the came out in 2006 and I have a couple more classics. I use one of the classics with a number of Takumar lenses and really enjoy it, reminds me of the 1980s using film and manual focus lenses, something special about it. The Mkii is great too.
Thanks for this Martin! Just picked up a second 5D1 as a backup but it's also pretty much mint so I'm tempted to just hoard it until my other body bites the dust. One interesting thing I noticed is the write speed/buffer seems slower than my other copy after shooting an image and having it pop up on the screen; hopefully not an indication of it's lifespan going forward.
I recently got myself a 5D classic just out of fun for about 100 bucks and really enjoy the experience using it, since I started photography with mirrorless cameras. Since I have that 5D classic I'm basically binging your videos! :D Your videos are awesome and I learn a lot from you! The downside after watching so many of your video is that I'm tempted to get also the 5D Mark II and the Nikon D700 :D One question to you, since you are an expert on these DSLRs: how does these different old sensors compare, if you convert the images into black and white? Is there any difference?
Your photographs are absolutely stunning. I don’t use any post production software as the Nikon D810 seems to have many features to yield very good results out of the camera. Excellent video as always. Thank you for sharing.
The weird battery is the only reason I haven't yet bought a 5D classic to add to my 5Dmk2, 6D classic, 6Dmk2, and 7D classic… I am tempted every time you talk about it here on TH-cam though… Can you stop please! LOOOL
Great images and comparison Martin! Nice to see a pro photographer creating fresh new images on these classic beauties. I still have a 5D and 6D. Every time a 5Dii comes through our local camera shop I am so tempted! All of these classic DSLRs are incredible value for money, and just plain fun.
I bought a 5DSR second hand ... And am happy with what i get though i wish i had a moveable back screen when doing Macro .. I'd like to try / do some photo bracketed captured but as i use Affinity 2 . Gelling pics i've no clue ..
Happy that I yesterday bought the mk2. Just the body, now looking for lenses. 240€, looks to be in good condition with 5500 in shutter count. Hope I made a good deal. Now I’m about to sell my X-T5. To much money in it for my skills. Simple as that.
I just got a Mk2 from Japan, mint, for $AUD400. It's such a perspective shift from mirrorless: chonky, clacky and hefty, when that mirror slaps I feel it, but it's like firing a rifle in a sense - you know when you take a shot! And it reminds me how fortunate I am to have all the modern systems, but also grounds me back into the organic nature of photography. But, I think I would prefer a Nikon D750 - I know it's not a direct comparison, but the D750 felt better in my hands, balance wise.
I shot with a 5D for 11 years, and I don't really miss it now that I've moved on to an EOS R. The EOS R is not a perfect camera, but the autofocus alone makes it so much more useable for me. I agree that the 5D is a very capable camera, and it does have it's own look. I think part of it is the larger pixel size, which shows up in the grain at higher ISO.
Fantastic video, feeling a lot of nostalgia for my 5D Classic! The 5D2 rendering reminds me of my 1Ds2 which I adored (except the rubbish batteries I had)!
i was hoping to see photos i‘ve never seen before taken with both cameras and compared side by side. so i can really see how much of a difference it is.
I own both....yes, the AF system is sub-standard (nowadays) but it does get the job done...and honestly, the slowest AF system i've ever had via DSLR, or camera into general - Sigma DP1 original! It's slow as molasses...the AF...but also does get the job done.
The AF speed is lens dependant. My Canon 35mm f2 non IS from 1990's is hella fast on my 5Dclassic. Surprisingly fast i would say, even comparable to modern mirrorless AF systems
@@zampination I have a Tamron Soup Zoom, which i sometimes use, just to have 28-300....besides, i use it with my 40/2.8 STM, or 24-70 F4L USM...or 35/F2 USM....the Tamron focuses extreme slooow on the 5D....slow as molasses.
Always enjoy your content Martin, it’s refreshing to listen to talk of more substance than the superficial gear hype and pseudo-justification for 6500$ Sonys 🤣 What model tripod are you using? Thanks!
The 5D Mk I renders beautifully, with a flat non-punchy look, that's so different to most digital cameras. However, the DR is primitive and highlights are to all intents unrecoverable. As you say, not a landscape camera.
It is a nice TH-cam channel, and everyone is free to edit photos as pleased, in my opinion your photos are over edited. Maybe some clients like it and it is your signature style, good then :)
none of the two. they are both a sensor without af. The II at least has a decent resolution. I've owned the first version. Beautiful fake colours. Low dynamic. Low resolution, Pathetic AF that always made me use center af sensor and recompose. The second is the same but with higher resolution. I would considere only 5D III on.

Im not an expert on the hardware side like this, like I cant repair cameras etc, but I think that if there is dust under the lcd screen then the weather sealing is probably compromised.
and I dont mind you asking 🙂
Thanks for the video Martin, I have both, I think I favor the classic, bought one when the came out in 2006 and I have a couple more classics. I use one of the classics with a number of Takumar lenses and really enjoy it, reminds me of the 1980s using film and manual focus lenses, something special about it. The Mkii is great too.
Great stuff as always.
I picked up a 5di last year but it seems to run the batteries even when it's not turn on. Any ideas.
I bought a 5dm2 today, i had a 7d now. I think the 5d is a better camera for landscape.
Thanks for your advice and videos
Thanks for this Martin! Just picked up a second 5D1 as a backup but it's also pretty much mint so I'm tempted to just hoard it until my other body bites the dust. One interesting thing I noticed is the write speed/buffer seems slower than my other copy after shooting an image and having it pop up on the screen; hopefully not an indication of it's lifespan going forward.
Who is the 5d mark i, mostly portraits and landscapes?
If you ever get a hold of a used 7d mark 2 I'd love to see you review it. May surprise you.
I recently got myself a 5D classic just out of fun for about 100 bucks and really enjoy the experience using it, since I started photography with mirrorless cameras. Since I have that 5D classic I'm basically binging your videos! :D
Your videos are awesome and I learn a lot from you! The downside after watching so many of your video is that I'm tempted to get also the 5D Mark II and the Nikon D700 :D
One question to you, since you are an expert on these DSLRs: how does these different old sensors compare, if you convert the images into black and white? Is there any difference?
own both as well! great video i agree with the points about the files especially. these cameras make photography fun
I had both, used both... I love both for different reasons... I still have my 5Dii in the bag as a permanent backup in case of unforeseen disasters...
LOOOL
I really like your photos. I like the orange color how Canon does them they have a nice warm feel.
I love my 5d mark 1! Just as much as my 5ds! Wonderful video.
Great images and comparison Martin! Nice to see a pro photographer creating fresh new images on these classic beauties. I still have a 5D and 6D. Every time a 5Dii comes through our local camera shop I am so tempted! All of these classic DSLRs are incredible value for money, and just plain fun.
You should do it. The mark 2 is so worth it if you can find the memory cards
I’ve only ever tried the 5d1 and I want it back again
But I also want video 🥹
I just got a Mk2 from Japan, mint, for $AUD400. It's such a perspective shift from mirrorless: chonky, clacky and hefty, when that mirror slaps I feel it, but it's like firing a rifle in a sense - you know when you take a shot! And it reminds me how fortunate I am to have all the modern systems, but also grounds me back into the organic nature of photography. But, I think I would prefer a Nikon D750 - I know it's not a direct comparison, but the D750 felt better in my hands, balance wise.
Low dynamic range cameras seem to render contrast better
Incredible photos!
Mark1 for the special colour science ,mark2 if want to see the mirror shoot out 😂
I own both....yes, the AF system is sub-standard (nowadays) but it does get the job done...and honestly, the slowest AF system i've ever had via DSLR, or camera into general - Sigma DP1 original!
Thanks!
Excellent 😀
The 5D Mk I renders beautifully, with a flat non-punchy look, that's so different to most digital cameras. However, the DR is primitive and highlights are to all intents unrecoverable. As you say, not a landscape camera.
Although I enjoy your videos, somehow I wish they weren't made because it drives up the price of these cameras on the second hand market 😉
"I just let it get rained on"
That makes me so vastly uncomfortable, I like to baby all my gear 😂Maybe I should just be outside and enjoy it
Dont worry man, rain never broke anything, probably...
I think I should own both and just have them 😅
It's hard to describe exactly what makes the 5D Classic's photos special. Whatever is may be, it's unmistakable. # je ne sais quoi
I have these, so I can't disagree with you. The ii is in a cage at the moment.
