  • DIY Pelican 1200 HiFiBoomBox with integrated Bluetooth 4.0 & 30Wx2 (TPA3116- very efficient) Amp board that plays super clean and loud. No BBE or sound processing just straight up pure sonic musical reproduction. AKA "BlackJack 21" with rugged portability and extended battery operation (~126Whrs). Smooth detailed sound with Link-Witz Riley crossover alignment (6500Hz). Easy to moderate level build (~8hrs) due to manageable space and minimum components. Parts list at end of the video but no links (please read my about page for why not?).

    Tought I was special. Was laying in bed thinking about making a build exactly like this, with no external inspiration. Then after a few minutes with google search I see that someone have done this before me.. haha :)
    Beautiful build! Will draw inspiration from your project and try to make mye own :)

      Same here. "The war department" is asking for something like this. I was going to incorporate it in as a portable solar generator to justify the cost on a project I want to do and something she wants....thought I was being creative with idea....nope...tons of them out there. This guy did a nice job. I'd really like to hear it in person, I think his speaker selection is underrated by bit rate loss of TH-cam and his mic....sounds pretty good with ear phones.

    Would be nice if you made a part of performing while being placed closer to a wall moe in a "traditional speaker placement" scenario. Free standing positioning is nice but not the whole picture i wished for. That being said, impressive build. Much enjoyed

    I'm following the video and we'll done sir! Can you break down the parts list a little more comprehensively and maybe a schematic how it's all wired up. This is exceptional 👏

    Question: Hard to tell from the vid but are you using the same hookup wire to double as your speaker wire? If that's the case, are you using stranded or solid hookup wire?
    Another solid build bud!

    • @MoDIYHiFi
      @MoDIYHiFi  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm using the optional board wire kit which appears to be multistranded and maybe 20-22g. I typically use 18g as power and speaker wire and 20-22 for signaling. Sometimes solid for signaling as its easier to "mold".

    Dear modiane, great work you're doing! Keep it up. Really enjoyable to watch!
    I am currently building a portable boombox with 2 sure amplifiers (2x50w + 1x100w) with a dedicated 2.1 preamp. allthough when i power up the whole system, it creates a huge pop sound (and a smaller one when powering off). I've seen you've built a similar speaker as i am planing, and I would love to know how you fixed this major issue with these amplifiers. And I think from what I've seen you didnt use the mute/standby function of the amplifiers as well?
    Would love to get an answer.
    Greetings from Austria!

      To be honest most of my boomboxes have some kind of startup /shutdown pop. I haven't experienced anything detrimental so far and really not concerned. The JAB boards exhibit much lower pops.

      this annoys me too, so I will add something like this www.ebay.com/itm/Audio-Speaker-Protection-Board-DIY-Components-Kit-for-Stereo-/272433005304?hash=item3f6e45c2f8:g:5ikAAOSwxB9YF0y6 to my box, some amps have it integrated, but not the cheap ones, I like :]

    sweet speaker. About that charging, I tried step-up convertor where you can select exact voltage but it was only working for some time. Now I am charging with my lab power supply or with my model air craft charger (I even put a balance lead on my speaker so, it is balanced) anyway hope you will find working solution. My next speaker will be 9s (37v) 220w amp with 10" sub :]

      I also tried a boost convertor but it couldn't handle the current requirements...smoked! I'd like to see a video of your 9S project sometime!

    Think you can provide a schematic for the crossover in this build? Or do a video covering crossovers? Thanks! Great videos!

      Just look up Second order Link-Witz Riley with a crossover of 6500hz. There are plenty of crossover calculators online.

    • @vincentkoster6291
      @vincentkoster6291 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob Colon on those crossover calculators. When they ask for the impedance for the woofer (or tweeter), do I fill in the NOMINAL impedance of the woofer or the impedance at the frequency I'm crossing it over. It would be great if someone could help me!

    • @MoDIYHiFi
      @MoDIYHiFi  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      iPhone mic is one variable and there are other variables to consider affecting sound quality. The adventure of creating your own great sound is what attracts me. And room to improve keeps me going. Try it!

      modiane1 I'm all for experimenting but for my first boombox I need to know the parts I pick can do what I want before I buy them cause I don't have any disposable budget right now. On that subject, do you know of any small subwoofers (6" or smaller preferably) that have appreciable frequency response below 65-60hz? I can't find anything, I was hoping to get something that can do low 30s but I'd be fine with mid to low 40s at this point.

    I have this tipy Dayton Audio KAB-BE 18650 Battery Extension Board for Bluetooth Amplifier Boards. I get a 3-type battery but the amp does not work when connecting this as it can connect 6 or 5 ampere ampere batteries

    I noticed that you haven't covered the tweeters with pvc or anything like you had done in previous videos... Is there a reason that you chose not to do it for the 1200 build?

    Hi Modiane, i have a 2x50 watt jab2 bought the wrong one, is this also going to work in this project ? all other parts are the same as yours, Cheers Philip

    • @MoDIYHiFi
      @MoDIYHiFi  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as you have the 6 pin cable to talk with jab3. jab 3 can be 2x50w or 1x100w.

  • @croissantlover8061
    @croissantlover8061 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    How do you know which cable goes where in the connection of jab2 to the speakers out? plus you say that it's one polarity out of phase, what does that mean, how it affect what im doing and what can i do to solve the problem? Sorry a lot of questions but im blocked and english isnt my first language :)))

    Hi Modaine, is this a 8 or 4 Ohm amplifier board? Ah I already see its 8 Ohm's didn't look good.......
    the one I can find is the 8 Ohm version. Why I ask is that I see you use 4 Ohm woofers and 6 Ohm tweeters.
    I want to use the Dayton Audio AMT mini 8 air 8 Ohm tweeters and the ND 105, should I use the 8 Ohm woofers because the amplifier board is also 8 Ohm's?

    • @MoDIYHiFi
      @MoDIYHiFi  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually find the 8ohm rated boards can handle 4ohm loads with no issues unless they specifically state they cannot. Having the passive 2-way crossover with a 6ohm tweeter results in an impedance curve that will vary allowing the amp to be stable. As long as the power supply can supply the required voltage and current with the amp board being "limited" gain (20-24db), it'll work fine. I've been testing this particular boombox at high volume levels and it runs cool without crazy distortion. Battery is life extremely long!

    I'm working on building one of these and wanting to get the crossover done correctly. Does it matter what leg the inductors and caps go? Also on the mh-audio site it shows the High pass being reversed on polarity...does this matter?

    • @MoDIYHiFi
      @MoDIYHiFi  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Craig Cary no as long as crossover components are on the correct speakers. Link Ritz Riley requires on speaker out of phase.
