- Pardon the background noise, there was a lot of construction in the area. I have since discovered that my maternal grandmother also has an ancestor who was hanged by Col. Cleveland in 1780 in the Wilkesboro area, a part Indian man named Edward Sizemore.

Thanks so much for creating this memorial film to William Thomas Riddle, who is also my 5th great-grandfather through his son Joseph and grandson Isaac. I live in California and may never get to visit Wilkesboro, so I appreciate your video and the work you have done to share it with your cousins. I am a member of the DAR and have conflicting feelings about this history...of course there are more than two sides to every story and I have heard that Col. Cleveland wasn't the nicest patriot around. I recall another story that he lost some of his property, moved further south and eventually died at over 400 pounds....a just comeuppance for that big meal he ate to prolong the hanging.
So funny, I just found out that William Riddle was my 6th Great Grandfather as well.
I know how you feel. Edward Sizemore...my 7th GGF was hung by Cleveland too.😢
I’ve since discovered I’m descended from Sizemore as well!
I found out recently I’m related to him too, my 4th ggrandmother was named Serena/Aurena/Irena Sizemore Billips 1822-1878.
So glad I decided to do a random TH-cam search on the Tory Oak. William Riddle was also my 6th great grandfather. We visited the site back in October 2020. I’ve read many many stories about their lives and this event. Thank you for posting this video!
I am a descendant of Benjamin Greer as well. I have a set of grandparents, Joseph Cartwright & Eve Miller, who died there at the same time in 1778. I have a sneaky suspicion that they may have been Tories or killed by Tories. Their children became orphans and were bonded to others. Thank you for this video.

My family comes down from Williams son, Thomas and went in to Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas.
Awesome. Hello, cousin! I'm descended from William's daughter Harriet who married Henry Fisher and lived in East TN. Their son Joseph came to Eastern KY which is where my roots are.
My family is down from William’s son, Thomas. We came across TN and settled eventually in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas.
I would love to get any family history you have. Capt william Thomas Riddle was my 5th gr grandfather and Happy my 5th grandmother. I have no history on Happy after the hanging. Thanks
