    When you read GWTW you can picture no one but Vivien Leigh as Scarlett. I think this film was perfectly cast. She did such a superlative job that it lives on even today some74 years after it was made. Not many films can claim this distinction. To me Vivien's life did indeed parallel Scarlett's. She was spectacular. Her later life was tragic, but the image that comes to mind is that lovely vixen playing Scarlett.

    Vivien Leigh was Scarlett O'Hara. She was born for the role. She didn't just play Scarlett, she WAS Scarlett. No other actress is conceivable in that role.

    Hard to believe Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz came out the same year and had the same director. Judy Garland and Vivian Leigh were the greatest of the great.

    When Olivia speaks about Gone with the Wind, she talks about it as if it were her own child. She's extremely proud and it's very touching. I would have loved to see Vivien reach the same age as Ms De Havilland. I wonder what she would have looked like?

    It is a lovely documentary. Vivien is stunning ❤😍 She is definitely ahead of her time. You can see when she doing something out of period drama, in most parts you can clearly see she moved nippily, like what's been emulated later by Audrey Hepburn... perhaps, that's one of the complexity that makes her acting so realistic

    I know this description doesn't exist..
    but it sounds like Scarlett spoke Southern British..lol!!

    • @anthonyhebisen
      @anthonyhebisen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Cocodan 2000 we have to remember though that the southern we hear now probably has been conditioned through many years. The first settlers of America were British and all accents derived from English accents. Traces of that would probably be pronounced all through the 1800's. If you ever watch films from the 30's, like Cary Grant for an example you hear a trans-Atlantic accent. It's a mix of American English with British annunciation at times. It fades out after WW2. I'm sure in a hundred years from now our accent will seem a bit different.

    I've read that GWTW uncut runs for 72 hours! We only see a fraction at 4 hours. The final scene is actually not the final scene. Deleted at the last minute is THE final scene of Scarlett at the gate to Tara: down the road toward the ruins the Twelve Oaks no one is in sight, in the direction of Atlanta the road is empty. Scarlett goes back to the house--alone. I believe she would have become much like her mother: calm, quietly strong, finding strength in her Catholicism, serving others.

    GWTW enthusiasts might be interested in "The Wind Done Gone" by Alice Randall (2001). The dust jacket calls the book a "parody" which I suspect is a legal loophole for a serious work of historical fiction dealing with characters from another book; possibly a copyright issue. It's GWTW and the time afterward as seen by Cynara, the bi-racial child of Gerald O'Hara & Mammy & who is Scarlett's half-sister. The book is written as Cynara's diary. It's an excellent little book, worthy of respect.

    No-one else could have played this. The closest otherwise was Paulette Goddard but she was a bit frivolous and lacked the gravity in the part.

    You know... when you look at both Olivia De Havilland, and Vivian Leigh,, you can actually see a difference in them that is pretty telling about their character(s)! Leigh actually looked bitchy, and self-absorbed, which she actually WAS! As for Olivia,, she looked honest, and pure. As it turned out, she was,, for the most part! I couldn't even imagine being with Vivian Leigh for a moment, even though she was a stunningly beautiful woman! She was disgustingly selfish and self-absorbed. Whereas,, Olivia De Havilland would be an absolute delight to be with on any level~!~

      NEWMOON54 Cannone Lol that's funny, your ridiculous characterization. Vivien Leigh was playing a part in a movie that anybody and everybody in Hollywood wanted. She was basically an unknown British actress and impressed David Selznick enough to win the coveted role. She owned 'Scarlett.' And played the role of a lifetime. And won an Academy Award for it. VL outworked and outacted Clark Gable, who was older and much more established in Hollywood. I don't think that you would ever have to worry about someone like VL giving you the time of day, back in the day. Ask Joan Fontaine (Olivia's sister in real life) how 'pure' Ms. de Havilland was. lol They had a lifetime feud. Honestly, you have no ideal what those two people were like. Also, Olivia de Havilland and Vivien Leigh were off and on lifetime friends after GWTW. Don't get me wrong, I have always liked Olivia De Havilland. Good actress. Always liked her as 'Melnee.' Yeah, hate to break it to you as well, read Fontaine's biography. 'Melnee' could be a big bitch in real life too. Yeah, imagine that, an actress being 'self-absorbed' and 'selfish.' Gee, what a shock. You think? Lol

      Well get over it. GWTW is considered the top movie or in the top ten, EVER.
      And the great Vivien Leigh, a British actress no less, beat out a ton of American actresses for 'Scarlett.'
      VL gave a stunning performance as Scarlett and took it the house for an Academy Award.
      Sounds like you don't have the discernment to know what a good movie is. Lol
