Wow, man! This has got to be one of the best pieces of film criticism I've come across on TH-cam. No time is wasted; in less than 10 mins you wholly grab hold of what Yang did with Taipei Story. Thank you for this

Hinting at why Lung helped Chin's father was a crucial point that wouldn't have occurred to me. Good work.

Omg! In such a short essay, you catapulted the deeper meaning and significance of this movie to me. Thank you sooo much for this. I could only grasp bits and pieces from the movie itself. But this video did the job for me. Thanks again. Amazing!

Great analysis. It's great to see the evolution of Yang's style. I've already seen A Brighter Summer Day, and Yi Yi.

An excellent breakdown of a less than perfect film. You’re right, it is very immersive like all of Yang’s work and hyper realistic throughout.

What a fantastic analysis. I indeed found this movie mesmerizing, but also walked away from it feeling as if I hadn't picked up on some of the intended meaning. After watching this, I feel even more appreciative of this film and its impressive subtleties - may have to give it a rewatch someday. Thank you.

Keep up the good work brother. This has to be one of the best pieces of film appreciation I have ever come across. It captured everything I felt but didn't have the vocabulary to express after watching the movie.

Fantastic analysis! Taipei story is one of Yang’s best, right next to Yi Yi Of course. Would love to see an analysis on Yi Yi btw.

Just discovered your essays (via the one on Wendy and Lucy). These are very well done. I was struck by your insight about imagining one knows a place via the films one sees about it. I've certainly had this experience with Taiwan, more via Yi Yi and to some extent A Brighter Summer Day than Taipei Story, and Japan via Lost In Translation. Keep up the great work!

I watched this movie it was very slow. Idk what you’re talking about towards the end Lung was murdered that girl was depressed hoping he’d comeback it had a sad ending she might never know that guy killed her love.
