The number of dislikes on this video is bizarre. I don't know if people were expecting you to dive directly into technique or what, but I thought this was a very good introduction.
Good question. I think there is some resistance to any definition of a METHOD and the corollary technical exercise to develop skill on chromatic harmonica, by some, as the instrument has always been considered something other than a classical one.
@@mastersofharmonica6200 I think they wanted you to just start making them into genius players right away! I just rediscovered my Hohner ca 1964 and you have taught me how to tell how the octaves are counted! I never knew! Sometimes you just have to start with the basics! Thanks! Mine is a 3 octave, 12 hole Hohner chromatic! It's in perfect shape! A bit stiff, but I'll work on that...
This was a nice introductory video! I’ve always been mystified by the harmonica, the portability and the instrument itself, the wandering/exploratory sound. I was on a hiking trip one time and a guy pull out a c key harmonica and I have been interested ever since. I will be tuning into all the videos!
I recently received my Larry Adler 16-hole chromatic harmonica in the mail today! Can't wait to learn how to play!
You are a gifted and natural teacher! Think I will buy your book! Wish I'd seen this BEFORE buying a Hohner 12 hole chromatic!
You are excellent, David.
I've never been keen in Hohner chromatic harmonicas. At least the ones that I tried weren't so good. I once tried a Suzuky it was very good but they are expensive. I've always used Hering chromatic harmonicas and been very happy with them.
He gives me right choice 👍
nice harmonica instruction video ...very fruitful to all and teachers like me.
Thank you Dave Kettlewell, great work, fun and e tremely helpful
Glad it helped, Drew...
u play absolutely great...but u ressemble johnny sins a lot..😂
Nice helpful ❤
Are chromatics easier to play than diatonics for single notes playing just bought a Suzuki folk master 10 hole diatonic feels hard to get a good note out of it never played harmonica b4 will be using it for jigs and reels can read music any info would be great on regards to a good beginner harmonica that’s sounds well and easy to play just for starting off I like the sound of the chromatic compared to the diatonic
Ok I have 0 idea about harmonicas should I get a chromatic one or one of those other ones...... I have no idea the difference
How you move your mouth without seeing the whole n blow . ?
I LOVE YOUR TH-cam CHANNEL!
Let me look for your other videos this one is not clicking.
I know music notes, I play guitar and keyboard. What is best way for me to learn it? learning the scale?
You can find note layout charts for various harps on that manufacturer's website
I couldn't find the next video. I even searched this channel playlist and I wasn't able to. Could you please help me on this?

You r awesome
I was wondering if it's possible to play a hohner without the windsavers; The replacements aren't available around here, and mine is a rather old model with spikes holding it together instead of screws, so it's kind of difficult to work on. I can't afford a new/more modern one right now.
Hi...yes one can play a chromatic harmonica without windsavers, but you will find it takes quite a bit more breath to activate the reeds, and certain techniques will be much more difficult if not impossible. As an example Bends will be much harder. The Swan SW1248M or the 16 hole model may be an option, as the 12 holer is about $100. The preferred harp is Seydel Saxony, but it costs more.
Yes, of course you can play a hohner without the windsavers, I have one without the windsavers and it works very well.
Can I ask. I am thinking of getting a 16 hole Chromatic. Should I get one numbered 1-6 or one labelled 1-4 and 1-12?
What is on the cover is inconsequential. Pitch positions are pitch positions, and you can't read the cover while you play in any event. 16 holers numbered 1 to 4, then 1 to 12 was to assist players adjusting to 16 holers....long ago. Better that you understand your 16 holer starts at C3....and then up. One certainly must know the pitches on one's instrument. Yes?
What is a good chromatic harmonica for beginners, under fifty pounds?
There are few chromatic harmonicas available for less than $65 new, you'll be looking at Swans on Ebay. See many video reviews of harps on MASTERSOFHARMONICA.COM, and written reviews. Watch reviews on TH-cam. Consider used, but often they have problems needing repair.
I just found a Swan 16 hole chromatic that reminds me of my old Hohner 16 hole chromatic at half the price of the Hohner
Swans are definitely lower cost
I going to buy a Suzuki Chromatix SCX48 it's good if I am complete starter?
Yes ..if only you would like to learn jazz .
Interesting and informative
Thankyou sir !!
I have a Hohner Chrometta 8. Is that good to start with?
Sure
Back again.... I guess I know how to play harp after all.
why are there more dislikes?
I don't know...under a TH-cam search for chromatic harmonica tutorials it's ranked #1 in the world. What I did was to develop a definitive METHOD for study of the instrument (based on input from many of the world's top players I interviewed for my book LOVE OF CHROMATIC HARMONICA, and I think some resent that the instrument is being defined to this extent, like the other orchestral instruments have, as historically, the harmonica has been thought of as a casual, everyman's instrument. Interestingly, a study of METHOD does not require that one play one way or another, it just provides more tools to the musician. I saw the same kickback with my invention of the Kettlewell Frictionless Mouthpiece, people were horrified at first with the change, but then became interested, and now top players have set dates to visit my home to have one made for them, although it is not my goal to build a business as a manufacturer or retailer. This particular series was for the newbie, and as such, I tried to present the information assuming no knowledge of music on the viewer's part, beyond their enjoying performances. But you've asked a good question.
Never the less, I love your work! (and the harmonica)
Because most people are idiots..this guy is gold!
@@mastersofharmonica6200 Its mainly because there a lot of people out there who have nothing better to do than browse through TH-cam and thumb down vids for no reason. And they wouldn't know what a good video is. I love your vids. Hope there's more to come.
@@muttley8818 I agree, many people thumb down videos stupidly, just because it makes them feel intelligent while in fact they act completely idiotly; personally I think that the thumb down button should not even exist because some cretins abuse of it.
Ma ci vuole molto a fare qualche video in ITALIANO ??? ...uffa che rabbia !!!
get to it boy. Spent 3/4 talking.
Dear LD...I have 1,000 free videos posted, this one is to teach, and is not an example of play. It has 119,246 hits so far, so someone was listening...maybe!
