How to load 10 bit 4:2:2 footage in DaVinci Resolve

- If you ran into the issue that DaVinci Resolve is not loading your 10 bit footage properly (just the audio) then follow this little tutorial to convert your files to a format DaVinci Resolve can handle, but keeping the quality.
h.265 codec installer was unfortunately removed by Microsoft... Shame.

Thank you. ive been searching for an hour for this. Short and sweet: 4:2:2 10bit you need Resolve studio OR more convert using free software.
Davinci Resolve (the free version) can read Quicktime MOV 10bit 4:2:2 with both GoPro Cineform and Apple Prores, so as long you use this format and one of those codecs you're good to go with the free version.
@@holdmylenscap7241 so I can convert my mp4 files to MOV files and it will work in the free version ?

@@holdmylenscap7241 hey, when I select 'Encode Selected Video files' and opt for Apple ProRes setting, it shows me the clips aren't compatible with the preset. Then it presents me with loads of presets where it is compatible, like PresetHEVC7680x4320

Do I need to convert them to MOV first before doing this?

Thank you so much. just got an fx30 and was recording in XVAC S 4k 200M 4:2:2 10bit Log P11. when I got hove My video player would play the files but Davinci Resolve could not render. Happy to help! If you work with DaVinci and 10 bit quite often then it does makes sense to upgrade. This method is more for the casual shooters who can't justify to upgrade to DaVinci Studio, but don't want to miss out on 10 bit video

@@johndoe-bt3ou i actually doesn't get the solution. Now i just shoot in 4:2:0 8bit . Unlike before it is 4:2:2 10 bit. I change in my camera settings.

I have studio but still just get an audio file with 4:2:2 10 bit.
my computer does not render fast with video card, when i record in 4.2.2 10 bit. only recognizes 4.2.0.
4:2:2 is a lot of data and needs a really strong computer, especially a lot of memory

I am getting this error now. I'm not sure why.
with this method filesize is huge. For my 10bit Osmo Pocket 3 footage I used Shutter Encoder and converted to "Apple ProRes: Proxy" Setting. (1.5 - 2.5x filesize instead of 10x)
I was thinking the same thing. But, can you guide me on how to export Apple ProRes out of Davinci without losing quality pls

What if I have the Studio version but still have this issue with 10 bit videos? Anyone know what could cause this?
The paid version should not have this issue. If you do the best is to contact Black Magic. They should help you, that's why you paid them!

Any idea if this changes the frame rate of footage? I followed the guide and it seems to drop my 50FPS footage to 25FPS..

you CAN change the frame rate so make sure in your settings it's not set to 25 FPS, but normally it should not change it.
Hi! Can you please give some additional info? I followed the steps but my 10-bit video shows as a broken TV in VirtualDub2. Like a TV with lost connectivity. When I go to video > compression, I don't see as many options so I can't choose the one you've chosen. Can you share more settings?
Thanks for the great video, I'm running into some problems though. When I try to upload my footage, i receive an error saying i have an unsupported file type. I downloaded (and paid) for the HEVC in microsofts store. But it doesn't seem to solve the issue, I still get the same error even after downloading the HEVC Video Extensions app. Any way to get around this? I shot 10 bit 422 4k on my a7s4

THIS IS REALLY USEFUL. THANKS A LOT !!! Your video can save me from paying high amount on Da Vinci Studio which I do not need.
However, it is crashing when I am trying to save the file. First time it gave out of memory error while second time it gave a formal page out-of-bounds memory access. I have 64GB RAM and ample amount of hard disc space. Do you know what can be the issue
Could be a driver or codec problem.
Also, is this VirtualDub software exclusively for Microsoft? I have a macbook and can't see where to go from the download

As every conversion this will reduce the quality but so slightly that you would probably do not notice it :)

I can’t import the ProRes file into Resolve. Both when I try dragging and dropping it to the media bin as well as using File > Import > Media, nothing happens. Not even an error message. Do you have any idea what could be up with that? :O
Even if you don’t, thanks so much for the tutorial. I just got a camera capable of 10 bit video and BOY was I dumbfounded to learn that Windows can’t play that and Resolve wants you to pay before working with it. After watching a million camera reviews, I would’ve thought I’d have heard about that by now... but NOPE. That was completely new to me.

By nature there will be some generation loss, but honestly, I could not see any.

Davinci let’s me bring in H264 10 bit 422 files at 4K 23 fps but not theS&Q 4K 60fps 10 bit 422, which also have h264 codec. Any idea why Davinci might have let the lower fps files play?
Not sure, could be that the S&Q files have different codec and they are h265?
DaVinci free is allowing you to bring in 10 bit ?
Yes it is, as long it's in the right format. I think the limit is not 10 bit or 4:2:2, but the h265 codec. But once it's converted to Apple ProRes or GoPro Cineform even the free version of Davinci will open it properly.
Is this essentially creating proxies?
Not really, as proxy files are only used at editing but the rendering happens from the original file. In this case you create a "middle man" for both editing and rendering.

Every time you reencode a video or image it is loosing quality, but in this case it's so little that you will probably not notice.

The answer is yes, but no :)
There is some generation loss as you are recompressing the file, but in my opinion it's negligible.
When I run the Virtual Dub 2 and click start after following your instructions, my video status says error. What can i do to fix this?
What error you get exactly? And what camera you used?
Hey Guys I have my Mavic 3 classic and I recorded in 4:2:2 H.265 4k in 10 bit D-log when I do this workaround will it keep all the settings and quality as if I used the studio version of DaVinci? is the problem that my file is not pro res? thank you guys for your time.
Yeah it should keep, just make sure your settings are correct and you convert it to ProRes

might be a missing codec? I usually have the K-Lite codec pack on my computer. Give it a try
Thanks for the video! I did the conversion of the files but when imported to DaVinci the video lags a bit and the sound disappears at times. I've also tried linking proxy media (created from the original files) but it doesn't work. When I try that, I don't get the option "Link Proxy Media". Instead it says "Link Full Resolution Media". I've tried the option "Relink Proxy Media" but I get a window that says "Invalid Proxy Selected: Please select a proxy clip with a matching framerate and overlapping timecode". Any idea why this happens? Should I create new proxies from the converted files?
Sounds to me that the frame rates are not the same. I had the same thing when I accidentally made a 60FPS timeline and imported a 24FPS video, the audio was lagging and went cranky time to time. Check that the framerates are the same during conversion and on your Davinci timeline too.

It worked but now my file is much larger. It was originally 124 MB but now it is 1.1 GB. What should i do?
you can change the settings to have the file more compressed but then you might experience a bit of quality loss. The less compression gives you bigger files but in return MUCH easier to edit. For me usually the A7IV's 4K 10 bit files get about 4x bigger when converted, probably on your original file you used heavy compression?
but theres not more information in the bigger filesize. isn't it possible to convert to 10bit with same filesize?@@holdmylenscap7241

When you choose the codec make sure the framerates are matching

There could be many reasons tho'
How much memory you have in your computer? Also are you using 64bit Windows, as 32 bit can not access more than 2GB (4GB if patched) which could be the reason. Also make sure you are trying to convert in MOV format not AVI or MPEG and using the ProRes or CineForm codecs. Try both and see if you are still getting the error.

all unsupported types lol. guess i'll just shoot XAVC-S 4K 4:2:0 8-bit. idk what the point of buying a new camera was.
the A7IV is still making better 8 bit video than the A7III in my opinion.

installed the codec from microsoft store and still won't play media. won't even play 10-bit XAVC-S 4K. fucking sad works on my macbook air guess that's where I'll be editing. have free resolve and it doesn't care about 10-bit footage like windows version. so shitty

Totally misleading title. Make sure you mention H265 10 bit 422 on the FREE version of resolve.
I beg to differ as the title is not misleading. It's not the h.265 what we load in Resolve and Davinci Resolve is the free version. The paid version has different name.
