IEM's vs Earbuds | What's The Difference? | I Explain...

- In this video I will explain what exactly the differences are between a standard earbud like the AirPod and in ear monitors or IEM's. I will go over a little history of where they came from and the technology that goes into making them sound AMAZING!
I will explain the difference between IEM's VS Earbuds and the different technologies that go into them. I will explain what a balanced armature is and a dynamic driver is.
Why pay more for less quality sound? I will show you why spending more than $75-$100 on a set of earphones is crazy and how you can get professional quality sound for $40-$50.

What I learned from this vid:
-IEMs are great.
-IEM means In-Ear Monitor
-This guy has been in the radio for 20 years
But wait! There is more! 😂😂😂😂
@R3Vlog You mean, ChiFi..?
Loll
I learned that IEMs have more speakers than earbuds
I've been using earbuds more than IEMs rn, I get better soundstage and I like the balanced sound signature it has provided me. It was cheaper too. IEMs shine outdoors in noisy environments imo, earbuds shine at quiet places.
This guy just destroyed beats, skull candies and airpods reputation. Thanks for the heads up and great content hobart! Keep it up
Thanks! Thats not what I'm trying to do. I am just trying to point out that there are differences and sometimes you may be paying more for less. Or you can get something for the same price that is better. Don't get me wrong the airpods and beats may sound good but not $200 good in my opinion.
They never had a good reputation among audiophiles
They were already horrible years ago and I guess they're still horrible now.
Beats are a damn joke, $190 for the brand, $10 for the audio.
@@Hychra Aggressive marketing tied to the brand name. All aesthetics but lacks quality on where it really matters.
It's not a surprise they're successful when majority of people easily fall prey to false advertising what with their inadequacy for basic research.
Now this is a genuine, authentically useful way to explain this without being a snob, a twat, in other words, without alienating people. It’s kind of lame when artists/experts use their knowledge to make others feel inadequate, when it’s so easy to do it this way. Thanks

7:24 bruh that is so accurate. I have bought a KZ ZSN Pro X in-ear monitor last month, and this was my legit first reaction when I put it to play some David Guetta and some other EDM music that I love. I was like "wait a minute, *are there more instruments in this song?* " Then I fell in love with this thing. Maybe it's not the best model of IEM, but I am sure loving it. Imagine feeling like you've been living under a cave and suddenly seeing the sunlight for the first time; that's how I felt

Lmao same, I think being an audiophile is starting to become a new hobby of mine
Same here with the same model. Feels like discovering new depths of every song in my playlist
My ZSN Pro X just arrived today, can't wait to try them!
Woah I just got my ZSN Pro X yeterday and it's great
Beats: Dang it! This guy is educating people about IEMs. I guess we can't rely a name to sell our basic headphones at a premium price. Looks like we need to buy KZ to actually have a high quality product to sell...

For real beats was already bought by Apple.
There are a lot more brands than the KZ like TFZ (costs between 60$ and above) or Blon (almost the same price with kz's) that are better than KZ
@@Ivannbeats get a blon 03, great sound for the price they're around 20. Kz edx is around 6-8 usd and they sound great
Two month's ago, I HATED IEM's! I had bought a set of Shuoer Tape's, crammed 'em in my head, listened to them for about 10 minutes and threw them into a junk drawer. A month ago, I was bored so I retrieved the Tape's from the drawer and spent some time finding tips that actually fit and learned how to properly seat them. The sound was (is) unbelievably GREAT!!! Thick, full slamming bass, beautifully presented mids and crisp high's with no hint of sibilance...just amazing! And the Tape's, while good, are pretty far from the best IEM's. I have since bought 6 more set's because they are very affordable and each set has it's own unique characteristics. I would be hard-pressed to name another "hobby" that offers as much bang for the buck as the Chi-Fi IEM's that are being cranked out every week! Thank you for the great breakdown! Your enthusiasm is part of the reason for my new obsession!
Jay, that's awesome! Glad you have them a second try because now you love them! I appreciate you watching and glad I could inspire you to give them another shot.

It's pretty amazing how much Chi-Fi has sharply increased IEM affordability since the last 4 years or so. Back in the day, IEMs with balanced armatures and detachable cable were exclusive to high end products. Nowadays, you can find 20$ Chi-Fi IEMs with BAs and MMCX or two pin connectors.

Got myself an KZ ES4.. then purchased a KZ ZSN Pro X.. I'm loving them.. wearing them while playing games and listening to music.. best experience ever..
How was the kz ZSN pro x in terms of gaming?
I'm planning to buy them so I wanna hear u r review about them😊
I've been a live sound engineer for 33 years (much of that time spent as a monitor engineer). I started in 1989. When I first started IEMs were a rarity. Stage Monitors and side fills were still the norm. As IEMs began to populate the market...musicians began showing up with them. Future Sonics was the big dog in the early days of IEMs.
Here are some reasons not to use IEMs....
1 - Musicians often pull one ear out, so they have an ear mix in one ear, and hear the room/stage monitors with the other ear. That can be very very damaging to the ear with the IEM. If you do it continuously, for years, you can really cause damage. And its an inbalanced damage.
2 - A majority of musicians who use IEMs, still want stage monitors as a back up. So while IEMs are sold as a convenience... We are still putting all the same old speakers and amps on the truck. Often they want the stage clear of stage monitors. So we have to fly huge PA speakers on the sides of the stage, and spray the stage with sound.
3 - Custom molded ears, seal the IEM so well, that there is no air movement in your ear. I've seen more than one sweaty musician walk off stage after performing, with sweat adding to the seal of the mold...and when the IEM is being removed, it acts as a plunger, and pulls the ear drum. I've seen this rip ear drums.
4 - Multi driver IEMs tend to run at lower volume. They run at higher ohm ratings, as a way to protect all those drivers. That high ohm rating pulls less power from the wireless ear pack or headphone amp. I see many musicians go through all the latest greatest multi driver IEMs, only to switch back to single drivers for the increased volume.
5 - In the age of technology.... Mucisians generally have tablets, to mix their own mix, connected to the digital monitor console via a router. By and large, they build terrible mixes for themselves, because they are not audio engineers. So you have a band on stage playing, each musician with a weird ass mix...which ends up isolating them from the rest of the players. So the chances of a band locking in as a band, is diminished. They all have no idea whats really happening in the space that they are playing in, often creating a very unnatural sounding performance.
5 - Today, most bands use backing tracks. This requires playing to click track (a metronome), and a slate track (a voice instructing you whats happening next "bridge", "chorus", etc..). IEMs allow this, because no one in the audience can hear it. Its another factor that generates very sterile performances.
So IEMs are not turning out to be the great savior that they were marketed as.
Thanks for your comment Scott!
what if im just regular listening to music while shopping? With one IEM in one ear and one ear out? Would that cause any ear damage?
@@suzukaziodyne9723 ... If your not listening at damaging levels, its probably ok. I probably wouldn't do it for prolonged periods. The brain is not really set up to receive such direct information in one ear, while only hearing natural world ambience in the other ear. It can cause mental fatigue.
İ know that your comment iş old now and probably you don't want to return back but, İ'm thinking it about gaming , and concernes about using it for long durations, both ear will ve plugged, will there be any risks ?
@@burakbarlasatak6843 ... It really depends on volume levels, and the type of earbuds you're using. If your earbuds create a total seal with no air flow, it can be damaging and even painful at certain volumes. It can become physically uncomfortable, after prolonged preriods, even at reasonable volumes. The physical ear structure actually has a lot of nerves, and something being shoved in the ear can cause irritation after a while.
Musicians wear theirs for an hour or two at a time, while performing concerts. If your gaming for multiple hours, your ear structure can start to ache physically.
I would recommend the lightest weight, over-the-ear full muff headphones you can find. Something that has a nice thick, light weight foam surround. Any amount of reduced weight, adds to the amount of time that they are comfortable to wear. You also want something that is not squeezing your heard too tightly.
Hope that helps!

@@Finger_Lock_ If you are thinking of raycons I will straight up laugh in your face. Imo there arevery few (if any) better wireless earphones than the airpods pro. Apple is actually having one of tge smallest profit per unit sold in the epectronics industry. Their products are very well build and engineered so therefore they cost a lot to make. Shipping employment, marketing etc. It all costs, when it comes to brands ilke kz they do not bother with marketing, the result being a lower price. Now that we settled this these products should not be compared side by side. Their target is very much different. Kz zs10 pros are; wired, bulky, cheap packaged, you won't get good customer service but sound great and absolutely destroy airpods in this aspect. Airpods pro on the other hand are wireless, have a bunch of fancy technology in them, got anc, work great with iphones, got good sound (premium I would call it) but not exceptional. @@HobartsReviews after a long time i got the packages, postal service sure took their sweet time
The kz edr were very cheap and sound is ok, but compared to other headphones in the same price, they are superior, the small net between the exterior and interior of the iem fell off kinda quickly though.
Then i got some UiiSii hm7/9, and in sound quality they are a straight upgrade, compared to stuff I can get locally for the same price they also beat them in price to performance. Only detail was the plastic housing on the jack would move up the cable, and it always happened when unplugging, nothing some glue couldn't fix tho.
And finally the KZ ZSN pro, love the detachable cable, fits right in my ears, they sound amazing, cheap price, and destroy competitors in price to performance.
The repeating factor is the superior price to performance these iem's have, and that for every price point you can find something of excellent quality. Also love that they are much more comfortable than using those fully plastic earbuds, don't know how i used those in HS without losing an ear.
Also on a related note, the ones I bought had some really low impedance, so i got an impedance plug to effectively nullify the hiss noticeable at low volumes.
Great video. This info was exactly what I was looking for.
Awesome! I'm so happy it helped you out! Thanks for watching!
I heard it from an audiophile that you don’t need dual drivers from an iem to necessarily give good sound. A single tuned driver from normal earphones is good enough to create great imaging and soundstage too. Good to hear different opinions.
More drivers doesn't mean better sound
What really important is the tuning
That's where iem s stand out
A single Dynamic Driver (DD) can do a lot on its own.
By designing clever crossovers with Balanced Armatures (BAs) and other types of drivers, the entire soundscape can be improved quite a bit, on top of that.
Once I bought my first pair of KZ IEMs (cant remember which model) I never went back to ear buds. Great Video.

nice video sir , im sold, right after i watch this video, i order the KZ ZSN PRO X, now i know the difference between normal earphone and iem, thanks sir
Awesome thanks!
originally got myself a pair of KZ zsn pro, which were great for 20€, nothing came close to the quality at the same price range, but after a few months i decided i wanted to take the next step, and bought the KZ zsx "terminator" which are the BEST you can get for around 60€ with a more balanced tuning for a good reproduction accros the whole specter, and extremely clean audio.
happy to see them gain some popuarity as iem's are really a good option for anybody!
Thank you, just ordered my own pair of kz10's after viewing this video, glad I took the time to make an informed decision! 🖖
Awesome! You will love them?
Hello Hobart! I just wanted to thank you for such a crystal clear explanation for the simple Joe out there. I have some knowledge about this things but it is sometimes difficult to get other people oriented without boring them or loose them. Keep the good work. We are watching!!!
Eddie, of course! Anytime I can help you understand stuff I am happy to do it! I love to learn and then share my knowledge with you.😀 I appreciate you watching!
Thank you I’ve been researching the different types and this is probably my 10th video and the first one that explains the difference. Thank you thank you!!
Hey Jimmy, you're welcome! I have some more videos on specific items if you want to check them out and learn about different types of IEMs. Thanks for watching!
@@HobartsReviews I will check out your channel!! Thanks for the great info. It sounds like you already know how difficult it can be to get straight information about the differences. I definitely appreciate you saved me a bunch of time. I’ll be ordering a pair of IEMs shortly
i just ordered the KZ pros, I can't wait. They were insanely affordable too
Thanks for this video! I am now waiting for my KZ ZSN PRO X. Excited!
Just bought a pair of Tin t2, arriving today. I'm pretty excited
Awesome Trevor!
How've they been? Considering buying one
@@evr-grn honestly, after upgrading from my Samsung buds they are among the best $50 I've ever spent. I highly reccomend them
@@trevormtb9372 Thank you!
Now I know what IEMs are! Thanks for you information. This is all new to me. Will order the KZ ZS10 Pro. Thanks so much!
Awesome! There are some newer IEMs I put links in the description that are more recent. Just FYI
Thank you.Excellent presentation.Very informative..
This is probably the best explanation of IEM to Earbuds comparison. How are they as bluetooth?
Awe thank you so much! They are great Bluetooth.
You are indeed correct, I never expect adding a little bit more driver can create such differences when I upgrade from Plextone DX6 (1BA+2DD) to KZ ZSX (5BA+1DD). The differences is noticeable especially if you listen to anime sort of music that has a lot of sound coming at once.
Just what I needed then!
Dude you are underrated. Atleast on youtube. You deserve many more subscribers. Nice research
Thanks so much friend! Feel free to speed the word..lol
You're not only educational. You're very entertaining too! Thank you Hobart!
Lol. Thanks Jay!
This guy's voice is great for teaching, especially for online lectures.
You can say what you want, but i took this from a guy who's been in radio for 20 years
Thank you for NOT wasting my time. Buying my KZ ZSN Pros right away.
I'm a bassist and pianist and I can safely say that IEMs allow you to hear things you haven't heard before. I own the Shure SE215 and KZ zs10 pro and my God, it truly sounds amazing, even for your average joe... The way you look at music will be changed 👍 👍
DarkZecter I totally agree!
Nice! How would you compare the zs10 the shure's?
@@abelfonseca comfort wise the shure is unbeatable. You get foam tips with the shure and they sit in your ear nice and snug. They don't fatigue your ear. The shure has a better cable than KZ, but that is not saying much since i dislike the shure cable too.
In terms of sound quality, the KZ just about beat the Shure. Shure has really good bass and mids but the highs dont really stand out. The KZ has a little less bass imo but more defined mids and a little better highs. However, the 's' and 't' are a little harsh.
Kz beats the shure in terms of affordability. KZ's 50 euro/dollars compared to Shure's 100 euro/dollars.
My recommendation is the KZ ZS 10 Pros. But if you have some spare money, go for the Shure. Both are very good on their own respects.
@@HobartsReviews lol m. In radio too.. Loved the video.. Gonna soon buy the moondrop spaceships.. As crescent has been discontinued.. Already got the kz zsn pro x
What ur tips to really get more out of the music... Should I use a portable DAC I only use them with my smartphone on Spotify
It's ridiculous how good the ZS10 Pro's sound. For the price, they absolutely change your music listening experience. Agreed, you hear things you've never heard before 🤯
Way more knowledge than I expected and now I seriously need to buy these. The ones you yourself are using because it really does sound like you know what you are talking about.
Pedro, thanks for the kind words! Yeah the ZS10 pros are nice but I also put some new links in description to some newer IEM's you might want to try.😉
@@HobartsReviews You share your knowledge in such an engaging way. Very grateful I came across your video.
I was looking for some some earbuds because I hate when I need to go somewhere, and that day I was wearing my dt 770's and I get headphone hair. Then found out about IEM, and wanted to learn the difference. Dude amazing video. I was thinking on getting the Linsoul BL03 for because they are really cheap for me and they are good for gaming, which I am going to be using them for.
Thanks for watching! Yes the BL03's are a classic pair of amazing IEMs!
I have been using kz zsn pro about a year.. Great sound quality and durability too.. just love it 😍
Awesome Fatin!
Thank you for this video. Finally decided to educate myself about this after having been introduced into the iem world by my friends years ago.
I might just buy an IEM after this. I discovered about IEM before, but the name sounded too professional, that I thought a non-professional like me shouldn't own one. I've seen KZ's IEMs, and the price is shockingly low. I know how earbuds with multiple drivers works, but hearing you explaining it makes it even more convincing. Thanks for the explanation!
since you're new to the iem world, I'd suggest you to get the Blon bl-03, these are around $25, have single carbon nanotube dynamic drivers but still sound even better than KZ's, strengthening the notion that more drivers doesn't equal better sound... Also if you want better detail and much better bass response with less sibilance, try the TRN BA5, these have 5 (around $45) balanced armatures on each side but doesn't suffer from anemic bass.
Thanks for your comments. Yes since I have made this video I have used some IEMs with less drivers that actually sounds better in my opinion. Yes I am aware of the BLON IEM's and how good they sound. May pick up some. 😉
solid video full of info i was looking for
Thanks so much my friend!
Thanks so much for this.
I've been looking for earbuds with the best sound but so expensive! This sounds great, just what I've been looking for, just in time.
Just found out about IEMs thanks to your video and ordered a pair immediately. I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve. Really hyped to try them out.
I love how accurate and exact the explanation was ♥️💯
Thank you Cielo!
Really helpfull video. Thank you for making this. I'm going to buy an IEM now.
Awesome! Enjoy!
I just got the KZ ZSN Pro and I can’t get my head around how good they sound and they cost only C$35. I have indeed heard sounds I could not identify before, mind you I have a High Res Digital Audio Player with a bunch of FLAC files. Those IEMs sounds damn good for the price
You should listen to EWF September and listen for the bongo man on the right and now you can't unhear it
Do they give you a surrounding experience?
Wat, you bought them for 35 canadian dollars? I bought one for 10$Usd
@@mayuravirus6134 lol I'm guessing you are a fellow DankPods Fan 👍
Good introduction of IEMs. I got a pair of KZ ZS10 PRO last April. They sound amazing
Damn you nailed all the earphones companies 😅
LOL thanks Random Guy!
This guy deserve a lot more reach. Best IEM explanation ever.
Haha thanks...feel free to share. 👍
