The Golf handles better because it's rear suspension is a multi link, and it has a wider stance plus a bit longer wheelbase. However the Polo GTi is a very fun car to have, and is really good value for money, as you said. Economical to run too.

These are a nice car, especially the twin charged engine, a proper LSD like the latter model would have made it even better. It's unfortunate VW had a bit of QC issue with them.
I used to own a 2012 Polo GTI, the clutch pack on mine died at around 30000km and was replaced under warranty. But the biggest issue with these cars are the 1.4 twin charged engine, many of them have a tendency of eating oil, lots of it. There was software updates, components replacement but it doesn't always to the trick. My friend has an A1 with the same issue, so don't say it's an one off.
