    Good review. I agree with you, the proxxon is fantastic, both the tool itself and the stand. I ended up buying both and after several years using it daily in my shop both are still like new and work perfectly.

      Do you have any issues with the sliding rail wobbling and not being straight ?

    *Bought as a gift for my son and his second grade son to use on a Pinewood Derby car. Wanted something relatively safe and able to be packed away when not in use. Worked well. **MyBest.Tools** Easy to use and set up. Case provides good storage.*

    Exactly the problem I'm having today! The Dremel 220 looks great, but it's exactly as you say in the video. I have a Proxxon FET saw which is pretty good, and quite tempted by their mill as a replacement for the wobbly Dremel stand.

  • @PhilipGLee
    @PhilipGLee 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I never realized how badly-centered and wobbly my Dremel was until I tried to use it for PCBs. Completely useless! Thanks for making this video, and I hope my Proxxon performs as well as yours when it gets here.

    I gave my son my Dremel as he just wants to use the hand tool and purchased a Proxon that I love with the drill stand to drill PCB and it works very well

    Bravo! an honest review. I wish I saw your video before I bought my Dremel set. I experienced that problem too. A lot of review in youtube never mentioned about that problem. Unfortunately, I bought the Dremel Workstation and its a total waste of money.

    Proxxon should pay you for this video - it's pretty much the reason why I bought the Proxxon tool I did a year ago. No regrets yet!
    The handle you need to hold up with a rubber-band is the only thing really wrong with it, but a rubber-band is cheap and easy to use ;)
    Anyone else watching - go buy one!

    After watching your video, I really expected the proxxon to be about 3 or 4 x the price of the Dremel .. but I was surprised to find it only slightly more expensive. Interesting! Thanks for the video review ... very enlightening after all !

    As I recall the flex stemmed from the black plastic part on the stand to which you screw the Dremel. It's rather thin and a light to medium force (such as a drill bit hitting its target) would cause it to slightly bend, resulting in larger diameter holes.

    Thank You for the video. I have been happy with my Dremel 395 tool and I bought the Dremel Work Station thinking it would be a decent rig for drilling small 1mm holes. I was mistaken. It is probably the worst tool I have ever bought. All it is good for is holding the Dremel and that's it, and they make another cheaper accessory for holding the Dremel. I have seen toy tools with more functionality than the Dremel Work Station. I have been looking at Proxxon and think I have made up my mind.

    Hi I got the dremel stand for Christmas. If you notice the tiny tiny screws up and down the casing of the stand. They controll the tightness of the lever. Now to correct your problem, the drillstand has a black lever to the right. Adjust your stand to the correct angle (left to right) and tighten it. Hopefully with some effort you should accheive the right combination of screw tightness and your stand should become solid

    Exactly what I was looking for! And was sure that there is a problem with my Dremel with so much plastic around and that probably Proxxon is more stable and precise!
    Tnx mate!
    You also, could make a comparison test for precise work of both machines. Would be useful and very searchable/required on YT. I'm sure. People want to know which tool is better and disserve to buy.

    Thanks for the vid - I didn't think it was just me! The Dremel Workstation is frankly a load of tat - and I fiddled with those tiny screws until I realised it was a waste of time - so I sold it on to someone who does wooden toy stuff. I'm happy enough with the Dremel 300 tool,(apart from the noise!) but, like you, I thought the stand would equal it. Just sold some kit to get the Proxxon bench drill TBM 220 so here's to accuracy and much more quiet!

    Howdy again.
    Drilling aluminium one may use a marking awl as a centre punch. Aluminium is soft enough. However, with steel one must use a proper centre punch.
    My regular drill press wobbles so much that there is no guarantee the drill bit will stay in the centre punch marking. I use the Dremel to get the hole properly started.
    I do this with free hand. A 1 mm bit will go deep enough in the chuck. Leaving only about 2 mm out the bit will not break while drilling. After this my press can keep a 1,5 bit centerd enough to drill through. Then the hole can be enlarged to desired size.
    I had been thinking about the 220 to make the start easier, but as You demonstrate the bit will wobble so much it likely won't stay in the punch marking.
    Many thanks. I will stay on the free hand startup of holes in steel.
    Regards.

    @mixas6678 Keep in mind that the IB/E is a 20K RPM drill vs. the Dremel's 35K RPM. It's not the reason for the difference in stability, though. The proxxon is just a more professional tool. Proxxon also have a table drill which is not much more expensive than buying the stand + drill and is more stable, if that better suites your needs (though it only goes up to about 8.5K RPM).
    Good luck!

    @EranDuchan  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @kenny474 Indeed, my expectations of the Dremel were misplaced. You're also right about a drill station, it will probably last longer than a rotary + stand. Still a year and a half on, the Proxxon operates great when I need it (which is infrequently).

    For this Dremel Stand, If users notice, it states very clearly it is made for a dremel 200 model. Other models are not made to precisely work with this drill stand. Hence the model Dremel 220...

    Hello Eran! i had an idea for you, add some heat shrink to that shaft that keeps sliding in your way. it’ll tighten up the clearance and keep it in place while you drill. leave a couple bare spots in the ends so you don’t knar it up while tightening it down. hope that helps.

    Great comparison. It's true that the Dremel stand is deceiving since it pictures an ancient model Dremel tool (I have a model 395 that is either pictured or similarly has that grey rubber there). Obviously it has not gone under much revision since.
    In the event that I should find a replacement, Proxxon is definitely a consideration at this point. I guess the vise is sold separately, but I like how the base already has a fence.
    Also, nice Quark.

  • @schpoingle
    @schpoingle 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    my review of the dremel press, which i do own, is this;
    yeah it's plastic, so is the dremel. you couldn't mix metal threads with plastic anyway. yes it is a little pricey, however, dremel is generally pricey on all products. now on attaching the dremel higher up to secure it; not safe for the either product. the force has to be put on the threads around the head.
    btw;
    other brands do fit in the dremel stand. i use a great neck ($20 awesome tool) and the portable Milwaukee rotary tool.

    What did you mean when you said "I put it in crooked, but it will do for this test"? How can you put the Dremel tool in crooked, and then do a test? Also I did not see the Dremel bit "flying all over the place." A clown thingy??? It would be interesting to see what kind of car you drive? A Ford/Chevy/Chrysler thingy or a more precise Mercedes Benz, BMW or Bentley, which are more professional.

  • @EranDuchan
    @EranDuchan  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @wizawuza Nope. Form factors aside, the Dremel stand attaches to to the tool with a plastic screw whereas the Proxxon stand uses a clamp.

  • @materiagrezza9331
    @materiagrezza9331 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Dremel is like the Nintendo of DIY and hardware. It uses low-quality materials, and you shouldn't expect miracles from it, but if you want to make light projects, they are worth the buying.

  • @EranDuchan
    @EranDuchan  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @fingersk8dan Interesting. The dremel stand is long gone but It would be good to hear if anyone has had any luck with this. While I don't recall fiddling with any such screws - my problem was that the stand holds the dremel with a flexible plastic cap/screw thingie. Once the drill hits the PCB it flexes. Remember, the PCB drill bits are ~0.8mm so even a 0.1mm shift is noticed (this causes either bigger holes, missing the place you want to drill or my favorite - exploding bits).

    Great video, thanks. It's kind of difficult to get detailed information about Proxxon products. Can you actually use the Micromot for milling? I know Proxxon makes a proper mill, but a Micromot and stand combined possibly with a compound vice would be an order of magnitude cheaper than their mill.

  • @TinyArts
    @TinyArts 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got a dremel, and i would probably not buy this workstation after seeing the video but are there any other better workstations out there that fits a dremel?

  • @EranDuchan
    @EranDuchan  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @BlackRockProject Nope, they are completely different. The Dremel stand has a plastic screw that fits on to the Dremel (you can see it in the vid) while the Proxxon uses a metal clamp to attach to the Proxxon drill. Remember that they have to be a perfect fit, otherwise it would wobble all over the place... and they are far from a perfect fit.

  • @christopherfothergil
    @christopherfothergil ปีที่แล้ว

    Brilliant piece of kit so long as you remember one thing, After assembling it you must tighten all the small brass screws up to the point it feels tight then back them off very slightly, then and only then will you get accurate drilling. If you tighten the screw as I mentioned, you will do away with the play as shown in your video.

    I agree that Proxxon looks pretty neat. How much did it cost you, by the way? Since precision is so important to you: It might have been helpful to tell people the price of each one. I paid precisely $38 for my Dremel workstation. I wouldn't say it was "Very, very overpriced." I bought it to use on wood, but I also have drilled holes in metal, glass & even rocks w/this! A fair comparison would have lowered the mechanism to equal heights, set equal RPMs and stated the PRICE, most of all!

  • @EranDuchan
    @EranDuchan  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @BrainbugRain Ha! Someone finally noticed the Quark. I use it together with a third hand soldering tool thingamajig to throw light on the PCBs i drilled. It's a great piece of kit. Thanks for the feedback.

    I didn't know a thing about Proxxon when I was looking for a small rotary tool to work with thin copper sheeting and soft polymer clays so that's how I got my Dremel 3000. Would definitely buy Proxxon now but it's too late. Not that Dremel can't do the job but if you can buy far more solid thing for (almost) the same cash... And I need a good stand to drill small holes, preferably not wasting my money on plastic Dremel workstation. It it possible to buy anything more sturdy and fit the Dremel into it?

    Thanks a lot for your review, i'm going to buy a little drill press that will be used for the same purpose, drilling holes in pcbs, i already own a dremel 300 so i was wondering if the dremel drill stand would be good for that purpose..... here i've found what a was thinking about: it is NOT.
    If i can, i would suggest you to replace the lever with the threaded pin used to fix the proxxon drill to its stand with a normal hex cap screw and a flat washer.
    Sure you will loose the " fast drill remove " facility.... but using a little allen key to remove the drill from its stand, instead of the original lever, will require no more than 20 seconds and personally i think that having a clear view of the piece on which you're working, plus no hassle around... it's priceless ;-)

  • @wizawuza

    At 4:30 you point out the major downside to the 220. It is a horrid "upgrade" from the 210. I'll post a dropbox link to a picture of it in the next post. (google doesn't allow paste into any top posts).

      As you can see, the holding body is one solid piece. The bottom platform raises up into the bit rather than lowering the bit into the holding platform. A lever rotates a cam which raise the bed. It is far superior to the 220 in every way yet they stopped making it. Go figure.

    Proxxon is better when you do more than a average hobbyist. I got the TBM 220 bench drill and it is really nice to drill PCB’s, if you like nice PCB cutting machine the Proxxon table saws are great.
    A TIP: To avoid using rubber bands or o-rings, just remove the handle and add a thicker or another ring to it so it won’t come to same position when you tighten.

      There is a couple of styles of adapters that will allow you to use a Dremel tool on a Proxxon Press. I have the older version. So, the answer is yes, with an adapter that's hard to find.
      An "O-ring" on the Proxxon press works well.
      I have a 3 foot long drill rod that will replace the Proxxon original.
      I bought an x-y table. It's not yet attached to the base.
      I will have the ability to "lock" the vertical position easily with a very strange shaft collar that uses no screws.

    Engineers know that plastic flexes at a certain frequency. Metal quash vibration at more frequencies. Look at the horizontal play at 3:12 is greater than 5mm by the looks - gross negligence in construction.

    Just so you know, I have a small home machine shop and I am also a woodworker, so I know a lot of what I speak. I have a nice bench-top drill press, and it doesn't come close to my mini-mill in precision, as it's not designed to do so.
    I highly recommend you look into the equipment offered by Micro-Lux. I have their variable speed mini drill press, and it's very precise, much more than the drill press which I use for woodworking. Very precise unit at a good price.

  • @EranDuchan
    @EranDuchan  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, I would say it depends on the sharpness, strength and diameter of the drill bit. The way it goes through PCB boards, I wouldn't imagine there would be any issue with Dominoes. I would take a Domino and head to the dealer to find out (that's how I tested mine).

    @riseabuv I bought them in Israel, so prices here are irrelevant I would think. I read a bit about the Dremel workstation at the time and people were complaining about its price... maybe I was misinformed and maybe it was right at the time and this is now incorrect.
    Regarding a fair comparison - its not scientific, I agree. But I still stand by my observation that the Dremel simply made larger holes using the same drill bit and same RPM compared to the Proxxon.

    I wouldn't recommend the other dremel models as I have no experience with them. The 4000 is an excellent model and performs quite well. It also interfaces with the drill press stand much better. I was using an old 7000 series cordless which was absolute junk, but it was also the cheapest one available. you get what you pay for.

    Proxxon all the way for a rotary tool. IB/E pro rotary uses alu bearing housing instead of Dremel's plastic/rubber sleeve. It costs more but you get what you paid. Precision wise there is no comparison between 4 way soft alu jaws vs groung steel 3 way collets.

    @BlackRockProject Dura-grit looks awesome. Having dremel disc shards embedding themselves into my arms gets tiresome after a while.

    glad i looked this up. I want to do pcb work and drilling plastic project boxes, and i definitely need precision. Not going to buy the dremel now.

    Hello, nice video!
    I was looking on the internet about that problem of the dremel working station and saw someone with that same problem and use rubber bands to fix the motor to the base. What do you think about that?
    The page I saw was on "instructables" website, just search for "Increase the precision of a Dremel press drill" and look the first result.

    Does dremmel product fits in proxxon mb 140?

  • @EranDuchan
    @EranDuchan  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    I set up the proxxon as high as i could (with the IB/E drill) - its drill head (not including the drill) is about 6.7" from the base. The travel is about 1.5", perhaps a bit more (it's adjustable with a screw).

    kuk1n - you probably never drilled PCBs. Industrial PCB drills run anywhere from 30,000-60,000+ RPM. And I will agree with author of this video, Dremel is JUNK! For the money they charge, they could at least make it out of alloy instead of chep plastic. I have it, tried using it a few times, but decided it's much cheaper to buy a used Dumore drill press than snapping expensive micro drill bits

    Perhaphs. But I clearly mentioned it would probably be fine drilling stuff other than PCBs, where you need the high RPMs (though my opinion about the poor, plastic-y design of the Dremel stand remains).

    Didnt it occur to you that the rotation of the bit has something to do with the speed?? Drilling is ussually done using between 500 and 1000 rpm. 0.8 mm is far too small diameter to resist sideways forces caused by the high rpm...

    @pavius1 hmmm. i see your point. i guess that the dremel drillstand was too maybe? 'industrial' for your type of drilling. i guess the dremel stand is good for bigger drillbits maybe down to 1mm but if you are drilling smaller holes get a better stand , or the proxxon.

    Totally agree, I bought the Dremel workstation and I feel I wasted my money, I bought it because I wanted a presicion tool for my hobbies but it is a bad tool, it is better to 3d print one of the models you find for free on internet and use some cheap chinese motor, the results are better.

    ⚠ The Proxxon Micromot MB 140/S (reviewed here) is apparently discontinued. Interestingly, the newer Proxxon Micromot MB 200 gets worse reviews than the Dremel 220 (on Amazon, 3.6 versus 4.5 out of 5).

    You bought a Dremel and actually expected "machinist" precision from it? Now there's your problem! The Dremel is awesome for it's designed use, small crafts and hobby use, such as model building and other similar uses where you are not looking for .01mm precision.
    Bottom line, you expected far more precision than a Dremel provides.
    What you really need, is a small mill/drill station, such as that which Proxxon makes, not a rotary tool. What you have will lose precision in time, just wait.
