I can't believe we're back in the pits of hell itself. Please press Q to not die for dramatic effect. I am now entirely convinced the Minecraft Movie is inspired by this game There's a lot of comments asking if I'll play the other episodes of this game and Season 2, and boy do I have the playlist link for you in the description of this video
@@JustSomeMexicanwithaMustache Honestly story mode isn't as bad as people make it out to be.. it explores all aspects of minecraft, from combat to building, even delving into community favorites like Skyblock, anarchy servers (boom town), redstone engineering, and even prison servers in the second story arc- the fact that they brought on youtubers for what feels like a murder party adventure map is also a nice touch- incorporating the far lands was also brilliant!
As ridiculous as Reuben's death was, you gotta give telltale props for actually sticking to the actual game mechanics and having him poof into a pork chop.
Imagine if Reuben died before Jesse could get to him, and Jesse's just desperately searching, shouting his name, and then he spots an innocent porkchop on the ground. I feel like that'd offset the inherent silliness of it, but who knows?
@@The-lurking-bones ???? No??? Have you seen a baby pig? They're WAY smaller. That's a full grown adult. I can't believe so many people liked your comment
Even better, in the Netflix version of Story Mode, they "fixed" Magnus/Ellegaard's death scene so that they actually disappear when they die. There wasn't even a body left to bury.
Come to think of it, they probably made memorials in the respective places depending on who died (redstonia/boom town) . not to mention that Im pretty sure one of the characters mention they’re holding a celebration for the dead character?? honestly its kind of interesting to think about. what if ellegards is a contraption like her memory lives on in all the mechanisms and strange red workings she’s made and magnus’s one would be some tnt-making monstrosity to ensure chaos is in full supply . its fun to muse
Stampy also made a video about the Minecraft movie, he also brought up Story Mode. He brought up a really good point about how in Story Mode, the way Minecraft works is normal to these people and it's how they live. Meanwhile the movie might pull the cringy trope of how it would be WeIrD and QuIrKy in real life, and have a 20 minute scene of "Did you just do that?" "I think I did." "Do it again!" "I could get used to this!" ECT. ECT.
At this point we've all seen enough Isekai stories (both in anime and other medias) that everybody should know these tropes are boring and cringy. And yet...
fully agree. on the other hand... HOLY SHIT IS THAT A BEACON?? OH MY GOD IS THIS MINECRAFT THING?? I'M LOSING MY MIND OVER ALL THE MINECRAFT THINGS WITH ALL THE MINECRAFT NAMES!! LOOK IT'S THING YOU KNOW!! *AREN'T YOU EXCITED ABOUT THING YOU KNOW??*
Don't you even get a chance to get rid of his armor for the fancy stuff that... igor? I think his name was? gives you with the fancy command block sword or whatever? Bro gave up his armor, died for nothing as a result, and we don't even have to keep his last gift as a momento.
Minecraft Story Mode actually LOOKS like Minecraft and what I expected the movie to be like. I actually think the game was enjoyable and I played a couple different paths, but whether people like it or not at least it actually is animated Minecraft 😂

Fun fact about Minecraft Story Mode, everything in the game was actually built in minecraft! (at least for the earlier episodes, idk if they continued that for the later ones). This means that everything you see in these episodes (aside from the unique stuff to story mode like the wither storm and whatnot) can actually be built in minecraft. The Minecraft Movie, on the other hand, doesn't even know what a 'block' is.
That's really awesome and makes complete sense. Why model something by hand when you can do it much more easily (and more enjoyably) in Minecraft? If this is true, I wonder how they moved it from Minecraft to their animation software.
@@ludwigvangaming1822 There's a program called Mineways that's custom built to export parts of a minecraft world into a format that can be plugged into an animation studio. In my case, I can pull minecraft worlds out and import them into Blender.
@@ludwigvangaming1822 I think someone made software at some point that imports Minecraft structures to 3D models automatically. They probably used something similar.

What I find interesting is that some of the character moments the other people get from when you DON'T talk seem to be more interesting then if you actual filled the void. Axel sharing his feelings towards Magnus for one. Its not a LOT of characterization mind you, but still its strange how your inaction in the game almost forces other characters to have character moments that you would just miss if you actually played the game.
That's a feature Telltale was pretty great about utilizing. This one may not have been a great example of what Telltale was capable of, but The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead were absolutely incredible games for that very reason you stated. Unbelievable amounts of replay-value as a direct result of it, too.
Somehow even worse than the Emoji movie (the usual film analysed as the exact opposite of The LEGO Movie), which is almost an achievement at this point.

Every ruined movie concept starts with with “so a group of people from our world”. Man, fuck our world. Why do video game movie directors keep inserting our shitty world into these movies?
@@schufck5272 Oh no. They could've really been thinking "There's a whole genre about people who go from the real world to a game one and it's super popular with young people!" The trick is that anime looks way better than whatever live-action-CGI thing they like to do, and they aren't created with *utter contempt* for video games as a concept...
If you want my attempt at a genuine answer: art exists for people to latch unto things, and they might find it easier with characters from our settings. Some aren't as nihilistic about their predicament and aren't looking for an "escape from reality" type-experience. Other people struggle with immersion and can't imagine themselves into a fully fictional setting that's animated (I struggle with this a bit and would love to have it back, rather than seeing everything as codes, sets and scripts). The less imaginative answer is that they probably wanted to include A-list celebrities and shove their face in as much as possible.
I think why Story Mode is better is that it's earnest. The movie looks like it's not trying to be good, and is just lampshading its terribleness with irony. I'm so sick of irony.
It also helps that you can enjoy an earnestly made thing seriously or ironically. Something made ironically hates itself, and it's hard to enjoy something that gives off the energy that nobody enjoys its existence.
The reaction to "I... Am _Steve"_ made me groan even more than the line itself. Like yeah it's a *TH-cam* stupid line, but the fact everyone dismisses it as Steve being annoying is so frustrating. This is supposed to be the main character, the guy you *should* be rooting for and supporting. Why can't this movie have an iota of self-respect...
its because they HATE giving us what we want. we WANT waluigi so we wont get him but they know we HATE jack black now so they're gunna force him on us. force us to love him to show they CONTROL US when in reality WE control them because of our money. they HATE they WE dictate their pay so they do everything to make us made. its not a good revenge lol
@@someperson9998True, but those games' worlds weren't as restricted like this one is with Minecraft. It's a sandbox game, meaning you can do whatever you want, but they still had to make it reasonably work in-universe and as a game (pretty sure Mojang even gave them rules). Everything is voxels for god's sake. I'm surprised they even got to publish this game.
I kind of head-cannoned that as being explained by the fact that the minecraft world is implicitly post-apocalyptic (what with all of the abandoned ancient ruins and dungeons around, and the unusually sparsely settled landscape) and thus people probably get items like nether stars from the ruins of lost civilizations, without really knowing or understanding how they were produced. But then, that is probably me putting significantly more thought into the world of this game than any of the game's creators did.
@@uncouthkoala Honestly, that kind of movie would be great: The main characters are heroes/explorers in a medieval-steampunk kind of Minecraft world (i.e. BotW, Shadow of Israphel, WoW, etc. drawing on some of the most popular Minecraft themes) that had an apocalyptic event (Piglin army, Ender Dragon, Wither, or whatever is chosen) and the gang begin by exploring/interacting with some structures (setup and setting). Along the way, they trigger something that causes whatever the old apocalypse was to restart (inciting event). This makes the heroes need to gear up, such as by exploring more ancient structures (ancient city, bastions, nether fortresses) and beating more mobs (make wardens a stealth section, piglin brutes, elder guardians, raids, etc. an action scene, or even the wither as an "ancient evil" they disturbed and need to reseal for an middle of the movie fight) before finally defeating the BBEG at the end of the film. Finally, the film ends with the gang rebuilding the world and creating a new place to live because, y'know, Minecraft. Lots of opportunities to have the characters be surprised or confused, for mechanics to be explored, and whatever else.
@uncouthkoala That makes sense, I initially thought she would just have black market connections which could still fit in to what you're saying. Either way, helluva miss on characterization and worldbuilding
Minecraft Story mode is, if nothing else, creative. You see them trying to tell a story with the mechanics, and especially for a game made with the young fanbase in mind, it's really respectable. It also unironically looks better than the movie.
Oh yeah no you can tell they tried really hard, even if it isnt THAT good i think they put in effort in a way you can tell, maybe with some more polishing it would be known as a classic now
story mode also wasn’t scared to inspire people. introducing the wither storm inspired people to mod it into the game. it also addresses how people would really live in this world. i think the best thing you can do with a movie based off of a sandbox is inspire. nothing about the minecraft movie is inspirational, and they’re shocked by the mechanics the whole time like “did i do that? :o”
I feel the same way. As corny and derpy as it is, it feels earnest. It definitely gives the vibe of a cute adventure in a Minecraft world against a big scary evil. I loved it when I was a kid! They clearly knew some stuff about the game too. Even simple things like The Order representing different ways you can play (pvp, redstone, griefing, building, and potions / enchantments) is really adorable. And moments like needing to escape a mob farm, flooding the End, having a TNT canon duel, etc show they put some thought into what sorts of shenanigans you can do in a Minecraft world. They even have some neat Minecraft facts like the Farlands existing, The Order of The Stone being a scrapped name for the game, etc. Now, do I wish it was better? Yeah. I wish it was like the LEGO Movie. But for what it is, it has some funny charm. It doesn't feel soulless like the Minecraft movie trailer does.
im gonna play devils advocate and say that story mode as cheesy and awkward as it is i think the people who worked on it actually did care about minecraft, and i say this because they paid REALLY close attention to minecraft's random quirks like say plants obstructing snow layer blocks from forming and such. also the fact they managed to make the far lands a setpiece is just objectively cool and so is the entirety of the witherstorm all this to say that while ttg made a pretty corny bad story i feel like still this was something that wasnt just made to have the minecraft name attached to it, while the actual minecraft movie (at least imo) is kind of a cashgrab
To add on to this, in the interviews of the development of the game the team created a private server to generate the ideas and story for it, where some of the incidents taken place in it were added to the game. They also took notes of the community at the time as well to further the development of the world and its characters and story, aware of the Minecraft RP scene on TH-cam and the many series that existed at the time. This was the TellTale team’s favourite series to work on and it really shows they had a lot of fun creating this.
It's also worth noting that all of the cheapest decisions (E.x. Rueben dying) were forced onto the writers by TT executives, the lead writer said this on his tumblr Edit: They also got tons of budget cuts and about 2.5 months to churn out each episode...with all that dev hell background info in mind, the fact that it wasn't a completely unserviceable mess is a miracle. EDIT 2: Meant to reply to the guy below me but my replies keep getting hidden, just google "eric stripe tumblr" and give it a look through, it's actually very interesting
I remember seeing one guy who was very upset that RT was "ruining" this game by staying silent, since that could cause the game to glitch out and the story to make less sense. I would argue that a CYOA game having choices that completely break the experience is a big problem, and should absolutely be shown off.
I have no idea why this game has so, so, so many awkward silence options and so, so obviously was not made with that in mind when it often visibly breaks animations and transitions. Did they know how terrible the story was and just decide to have fun with it?

For real!! He didn't come back to save them like he usually does. I can't find anything on if he continues hating you in the later chapters, though. Considering he's one of the main characters in 5-8, it feels like too big of a shift for this game. Would be cool though.
@livliveart unfortunately I don't think there is, I think there is a slightly different dialouge exchange when he meets back up with you in the vault, though I believe that is all.
@@livliveartas the above comment said, you get a different scene during his first appearance in Episode 5, where he apologizes for things getting so heated between him and Jesse before going back to a normal discussion. Aside from that, it seems to act normal like you never argued in the first place?
I disagree with it being Jesse's fault. Sure he took the potion, which was wrong, but if ivor had given them an actual diamond (which is well worth it), they would have never gone to his hideout.
Story Mode is at least honest, it accepts we know what Minecraft is and instead of going a recap on how everything works, it actually *tries* to tell an original story and taking advantage of the fun quirks that come with the game's logic like they're normal everyday things.
Honestly I think RT's just playing up how bad Story Mode actually is, I felt the same way for Heavy Rain (thought that game has other non-story related issues). Both games do not necessarily have bad dialogue or plot 99% of the time and have their own charm, only at very specific moments it gets very bad and that gets blow out of proportion.
There's actually a special ending in this game if and only if you consistently choose to bully Lukas at every opportunity possible. If you keep this up, you may well have one of the 3 documented recordings of this ending lol
I THINK Techno might not have picked all the right options- like letting Lukas go first (to use him as a meatshield) when the “bully Lukas” route probably just has you reject him completely
To give Story Mode some credit The story is AWFUL but Ivor and Lukas are legitimately decent characters. They may be the only decent characters in the game but credit where credit is due. I also really liked the Witherstorm as a boss, they could have easily made the boss and main villain the ender dragon but they came up with something unique. Also the unique armour that Ivor gives you is actually a really cool moment in the game. You get a lot of options for what armour you want, and that was neat. Everything else though 😬 Most of the characters are insufferable in my opinion. Axel is very annoying, Olivia is fine I guess but doesn’t do anything. Petra has far too much “this is the character we want you to ship with the MC” energy and honestly she can get quite annoying with her dialogue. The Order of the Stone actually suck. Gaberial is the only tolerable member and he get’s ruined when he runs off. Soren sucks, his enderman obsession was trying far too hard to be comic relief, and he also just fucks off. Ellegaard is just kind of there. And Magnus, good lord Magnus SUCKS. Watching him die is by far the most gratifying moment in the game. Despite the flaws though. The awful writing, the terrible characters I did actually heavily enjoy the game as a kid and I think it would be far better for current kids to enjoy Minecraft story mode over what ever fresh hell the movie will be
I do think story mode (at least the first 4 episodes) have a decent enough story for kids to enjoy, and more than likely a far better experience than how openly boring the movie will inevitably be
I never actually knew you can have Gabriel as a company over Petra in this, it’s kinda funny how little she actually matters in the first place. She’s given importance in the DLC and Season 2. But like it’s funny how she is so pushed in the first Season to matter so little.
The murder mystery with the minecraft youtubers was the coolest thing ever to me when it came out. I think it's probably the coolest thing Story Mode did in terms of being a children's game. Also, I recently learned that Ivor's VA passed away and I was genuinely distraught about it. I love Ivor.
@@Life_Universe_Everything I would also argue that thematically and story wise choosing Gabriel makes a lot more sense given the order of the stone reveal and the fact that Petra would have no way of knowing Jesse was headed to the temple or where to even find it.
@@bluejellybeancos About the soren part he does the whole "you cant always trust your heros" pretty well (i mean look at how many youtubers/steamers got exposed) and him running away sounds force wouldve been better than him helping the crew but i agree that his obsession with enderman is just weird.
I honestly do like the way Story Mode uses stuff like command blocks and the Farlands in its story, and how it included YourTubers and other meta stuff. It felt like it was (trying to be) a celebration of Minecraft as a whole, not just the canon world of the game, but everything surrounding it. Would’ve been cool if they even included Herobrine or something. Now if only the game was also good…

Here's a trivia: When Notch was looking for inspirations on how to name his new project ( Minecraft) on programing forums, "Order of the stone" was really popular subtitle appearing in multiple unrelated suggestions, originally the full title was even suppose to be "Mincraft: Order of the stone", at least until Notch dropped it, like 75% of his other ideas, leaving us with "Minecraft" as we know it today. Another pice of trivia: Minecraft Story Mode canonical exists in South Park universe.
One thing that really makes no sense is petra's moment where it states she gave lucas a nether star, and then later on you have petra not knowing you need 3 wither skulls for a wither to be summoned. IN THAT CASE HOW DID SHE GET THE NETHER STAR FOR THE OCELOTS' BEACON??
The Minecraft movie would be so much better if it was animated, but no, they had to make it a CGI abomination. Even Jack Black won't be able to redeem that mess.
The issue isn’t that it’s CGI, it’s bad CGI, I think 3D animation would work better for a Minecraft movie than 2D animation. Also the inclusion of actual people instead of animating them.

People are starting to appreciating Story Mode now because you can tell the writers either played the game themselves or did their research well. No matter how shitty the writing is, they brought up terms and concepts only the fan based used like the far lands, mod grinder, and flying machine. They worked well with the continuity of Minecraft while adding new concepts.
If nothing else, I feel like Story Mode takes the victory over the Minecraft Movie bc it generally knows what it is and takes itself seriously only when a serious tone works, but the minecraft movie's just got its head so far up its own ass that it can see into its stomach through its own mouth
You want to know what is funny? Given the average length of a hollywood movie, this video and the Minecraft movie might end up being similar lengths. Meaning we can actually compare "Which would you rather spend around 2 hours watching: The Minecraft Movie, or RT Plays Minecraft Story Mode?"
Minecraft Story Mode isn't Peak Cinema or anything, but the big bad monster is legitimately pretty frightening and cool. Plus, all of MCSM has more heart and soul and actual Minecraft mechanics in it than whatever that trailer was supposed to be Its also nicer to look at. The F bomb made me laugh my head off when I saw my brother playing it. It wasn't a very _funny_ joke, but the silliness was on par for a kids game while still being unexpected. I can't imagine we'd get that in the minecraft movie
One of my favorite fun facts about this game is that the cast list is fucking insane. - Jesse (the male one) is Patton Oswalt (Remy from Ratatouille) - Petra is Ashley Johnson (Tulip from Infinity Train) - Ivor is Paul Reubens (Peewee Herman) - Reuben is Dee Bradley Baker (Captain Rex from Star Wars) (yes, really) - Elegaard is Grey Griffin (Azula from Avatar) - Aiden (the "if it isn't the Order of the Losers" guy) is fucking Matt Mercer (Ganondorf from Tears of the Kingdom) - Soren is John Hodgman (the father in Coraline) and those are just the ones in the first four chapters. My personal theory on why the game is so shit is that they spent the whole budget on voice actors and had like $20 left over to hire writers.
I forget that 6 years ago a bunch of RT's fans were little baby children. I was confused seeing all the love for this game in the comments until I remembered, Oh right, time actually passes and children grow up loving the stuff they had as kids lol
i know we meme on storymode but honestly the mob farm location is really creative, really feels like it takes place on a public minecraft server with a lot of the settings (minus the obvious mods they were using smh, at least it wasn't that 'buckets on a stick' in the trailer)
The funny thing about the handshake near the beginning being given the pop-up "No one will remember that" is that it comes up at least two more times, meaning they did remember it, probably moreso than most of the times the game says that someone will remember something but it just never comes up again.
The Jesse voice actor's crappy underacted screams are genuinely one of the worst aspects of this game. It's so horribly half-assed, especially for something that happens so often
that would be Patton Oswald, he’s been in other stuff and screams of agony generally don’t *seem* to be his strong suit, weird he was put in the role of male jesse
@@HiyaJemma His Ratatouille screams are more tolerable, he probably had bad direction. Most of the VA work in this game is very shoddy, seems like a director problem to me

I actually like Minecraft story mode a lot, not because it's well written, but it gave Minecraft a story that wasn't generic "you go and kill the enderdragon, well done!" They chose a different end goal for the game and gave us main characters in a setting that wasn't made for any. It's cringe and silly but it's fun and characters like Lukas are unironically fun. Deep down, he's everyone's Minecraft boyfriend and that's something the "Minecraft" "movie" will never have
tbh as much as Dan was dunking on the game, watching the stream did remind me why I liked this 'game' so much as a kid. Being an edgy "too-cool" 11 year old (I was a loser) is definitely part of it because I was probably the exact target demographic, but I did like how seriously the story took itself for a kids game. It had plotholes and plenty of stupid things but damnit this was my SHIT as a kid. The big reason I fell off it was because I noticed (at about epsode 5 or 6, yes I know it took a while) that me playing the game led to the exact same experience as just watching it on TH-cam. Despite the game promoting your choices mattering, this game couldn't be farther from that. It's really funny that this is one of Dan's least favourite games of all time, while some of his favourites (Slay the Spire, Balatro, New Vegas) are all games where your choices matter A LOT and completely change how the game is played.
Minecraft storymode came out long after my edgey kid years but i can guarantee you, young me would have loved this game because of how serious it is. I laugh now but I know what i used to be like
I originally hated it cause it seemed like such a terrible game, barely a "game" at all. But then someone in a comment pointed out that its really more like an interactive movie, and that they literally have it available to purchase on TV along with movies (well, _had_ ) and that really changed my perspective. If you see it as a movie, its alright, its just marketing itself improperly as a game. I ended up only ever watching TH-camrs play through it which was plenty entertaining. IIRC the second season was better and choices actually mattered too.
And the few things that do change (The bad Lukas ending, Magnus vs Ellegard, and a few other things) don't matter come the skyblock episode. I enjoy it for the concept (and the wither storm) but they put the most minimal effort into it.
You know, I think the biggest problem is probably just how weirdly important Jesse's decisions constantly are. It's always "Jesse, what do you think?" or "Jesse, we need your help!" instead of making the player work to contribute to the team. Right from the start, you just have more importance than the other characters for no real reason
The biggest gameplay problem is that the choices don’t matter. The biggest writing problem is the characters are terrible (with the exception of Lukas and Ivor, especially Ivor from the DLC onwards)
After the New Vegas playthrough consisted 70% of Dan calling out every other male NPC being voiced by Liam O'Brien, I'm surprised he didn't call out the several background characters in this game voiced by Matt Mercer. Once you watch Critical Role, consuming any video game or dubbed anime becomes a minefield of "hey, I recognize that voice!"
Matt Mercer is also Ganondorf in Tears of the Kingdom, McCree from Overwatch, Jotaro Kujo from Jojo's, Chrom in Fire Emblem Awakening (and all other appearances), Spyro in Skylandera: Imaginators, and a lot of other characters
13:52 I will say, this is a fun reference since back in the day, Diamond and Lapis ore had a very similar blue. I don’t believe it was uncommon to think you got diamonds when you only got Lapis.
I personally believe that Lucas and Ivor are the best characters in the game. I think they’re both really fun and well written characters, but they’re dragged down by the fact that they’re in goddamn Minecraft: Story Mode ;-;
They were always my favorites as a kid. Lukas is just a genuinely nice guy. And Ivor is a chaotic maniac who goes from summoning eldritch horrors to building dirt lava skulls and being a ninja. What's not to love?
It's really funny how the "golden trio" of these games (Jesse, Axel, and Olivia) are by far the least interesting characters in the story. Petra is close to joining them but I feel like she just manages to edge out of the badly written category
The biggest problem with mcsm is that it was sold under the premise of a choose your own adventure or “decide your direction” type of story with multiple endings. The truth is that it’s a kids movie with a mediocre plot and some interactive cutscenes that aren’t super fun to play and have almost no impact on how it plays out and literally zero on its ending. The only good thing I can say about it is that it looks like Minecraft.
Even as a kid I noticed there were barely any parts where your choices mattered. Like, it usually just results in one character being swapped with another and fulfilling the same role. You rarely get different segments and never get different endings. The big exception is choosing to go to Boom Town or Redstonia. Although the end result is the same since you get both heroes anyways, the segments themselves are totally different. One has puzzles and chatting with people while the other has chase scenes and explosion duels. I wish there was more stuff like that. ....Only painful part is that Boomtown is more fun, yet it includes more Magnes. 😂
I agree with this. But there’s a little more to say than just that it looks like Minecraft: Lukas and Ivor are likeable, the wither storm’s a nice idea, the Far Lands bit shows that they know more than just the basics of the game, they at least try and reference the different things you can do in minecraft (redstone, PvP, briefing and building), it does have a few good moments/jokes and at least the bad moments are laughably bad so you at least get some comedy out of it.
Minecraft Story Mode actually tries to be creative with its ideas set in the Minecraft world (like the Wither Storm), while A Minecraft Movie appears to stick by a very basic approach with unfitting graphics.
the most frustrating part of this entire game is that your choices literally do not matter at all. your gaslit the entire time into thinking they do only for you to get the exact same outcome and experience as everyone else minus some really, really minor changes. the only time they seem to matter at all is in regards to how you treat lukas which makes me wonder why the hell the rest of the game wasn't like this
Despite it all, despite the corniness, the dedication to silence and mean dialogue, the hatred for Magnus, the EVERYTHING... ... He still picked the kind dialogue for Reuben.
@@DavidJCobb Ivor was always my favorite, and it hurt me so much to find out his VA passed. It wasn't one of his last roles, however it's said to think about, at least in my case, as it was the last thing I played that he had a role in

The Minecraft Movie, on the other hand, doesn't even know what a 'block' is.

If you want my attempt at a genuine answer: art exists for people to latch unto things, and they might find it easier with characters from our settings. Other people struggle with immersion and can't imagine themselves into a fully fictional setting that's animated (I struggle with this a bit and would love to have it back, rather than seeing everything as codes, sets and scripts).

Petra: Gives a wither star to someone, something only dropped by the Wither
Also Petra: Wtf is a Wither huh?????
I kind of head-cannoned that as being explained by the fact that the minecraft world is implicitly post-apocalyptic (what with all of the abandoned ancient ruins and dungeons around, and the unusually sparsely settled landscape) and thus people probably get items like nether stars from the ruins of lost civilizations, without really knowing or understanding how they were produced.
But then, that is probably me putting significantly more thought into the world of this game than any of the game's creators did.
@@uncouthkoala Honestly, that kind of movie would be great:
The main characters are heroes/explorers in a medieval-steampunk kind of Minecraft world (i.e.
Creative? Don't you mean Survival?
It's working xd
im gonna play devils advocate and say that story mode as cheesy and awkward as it is i think the people who worked on it actually did care about minecraft, and i say this because they paid REALLY close attention to minecraft's random quirks like say plants obstructing snow layer blocks from forming and such. also the fact they managed to make the far lands a setpiece is just objectively cool and so is the entirety of the witherstorm
all this to say that while ttg made a pretty corny bad story i feel like still this was something that wasnt just made to have the minecraft name attached to it, while the actual minecraft movie (at least imo) is kind of a cashgrab
To give Story Mode some credit
The story is AWFUL but Ivor and Lukas are legitimately decent characters.
Everything else though 😬
Most of the characters are insufferable in my opinion.

Well, I’m glad that this late in his career he’s back to where he started: being the best part of bad movies.

They worked well with the continuity of Minecraft while adding new concepts.

One of my favorite fun facts about this game is that the cast list is fucking insane.
- Jesse (the male one) is Patton Oswalt (Remy from Ratatouille)
- Petra is Ashley Johnson (Tulip from Infinity Train)
- Ivor is Paul Reubens (Peewee Herman)
- Reuben is Dee Bradley Baker (Captain Rex from Star Wars) (yes, really)
- Elegaard is Grey Griffin (Azula from Avatar)
- Aiden (the "if it isn't the Order of the Losers" guy) is fucking Matt Mercer (Ganondorf from Tears of the Kingdom)
- Soren is John Hodgman (the father in Coraline)
and those are just the ones in the first four chapters. My personal theory on why the game is so shit is that they spent the whole budget on voice actors and had like $20 left over to hire writers.

tbh as much as Dan was dunking on the game, watching the stream did remind me why I liked this 'game' so much as a kid.
I laugh now but I know what i used to be like
you just saw through telltales illusion
I bought it for the wiiu, playing it was so exciting as a kid on christmas.

To be fair Matt Mercer is really good at giving multiple characters a different voice.
If Patton Oswalt makes an appearance in the movie it'll just be full circle back to this
Post-credits plug for the sequel
If Patton Oswalt appears in it, is the only reason I’d see it. And only the scenes he’s in and nothing else
