I’m so, so grateful for CoCoVid. Not only because as a poor Aussie woman, there’s no way I could attend CoCo in person, but also because it’s giving me all these lovely new channels to follow! And hopefully it won’t take me too long to save up and buy your book- it would look lovely on my coffee table, and I find the more academic aspects of dress history absolutely fascinating!
The concept of a "fashion autobiography" is something I'd never heard of before, but sounds like such an interesting idea. Thank you for another great video. Can't wait to read your book!
I like the idea of actually keeping something like a diary of what one has made over the course of ones life. And those tiny clothes on the dolls are amazing :) A truly interesting topic!
This is so fantastic! I learned so much in this video. I never thought about cataloguing fashion in your own time period as being part of fashion history! Interesting idea. Grateful that they did!!
I love watching these videos! The vibe reminds me so much of my favourite BBC documentaries (*ahem* Lucy Worsley). Thank you for teaching such wonderful knowledge!
Oh wow. Hearing about Barbara Johnson's album made my mouth completely fill with drool. Woman after my own heart with that kind of organizational mind.
Such an interesting video! and I LOVE your wallpaper (I'm going to show it to my mum she is going through a phase at the moment of painting all of the walls in the house navy haha). I have my own 1920's Dress History channel which I've just started and your knowledgeable way of speaking in your videos is super inspiring xx
What an absolutely brilliant presentation. Upon looking at your book description it appears it goes even deeper into this fascinating subject. I have longed to purchase Barbara Johnson's Album but the price is too dear. Perhaps because you wrote a dissertation you may have an answer to this question, "Why has the book not been reprinted?" Looking forward to more of your enchanting videos. Thank you!
Laura Ingalls Gunn It was originally published by Thames & Hudson, and the V&A now do most of their own publishing, so I think there’s some politics there! Occasionally copies pop up that aren’t too expensive. I’m reproduced quite a few pages from it in Material Lives. 😊
Thank you! I was super lucky and got a copy in a local secondhand bookshop about a decade ago. I have reproduced a quote a bit of it in my book though 😊
People who think that people of the past weren't interested in history are out their mind! Dress historians and historians in general have ALWAYS been around and prevalent. One of the most obvious phases of this was the regency period. Where everyone fell in love the with fashions of history, statues and grecian fashion and they came back into style in their own, yet newly interpreted way.
Very interesting, thanks. Of course, I had to see if Ms. Moore was on TH-cam and, she is, so I have put her on my watch list. Good luck with your book.
I love your videos! You are the first (and only right now) person I've subscribed to through the weekend.. There have been many wonderful videos by many people too. Is there a text code to your badge?
Thank you for introducing this topic in this video. And well done on your book! Historically, women have always either consciously, or subconsciously, used their clothing as a vehicle for self expression, and a way to tell stories about themselves and the world around them (as you already know lol) Yup, a really interesting, and potentially, very in depth area of study. I think I'm really going to enjoy subscribing to your channel :) :)
okay I'm definitely going to keep my handmade masks for the future generation as a testimony of covid haha! I loved the video, thank you for educating me :)

I’ve always wanted to know about the history of dress history

So interesting!
Is the doll(s) the same one you talked about in the “How much did 18th century women know about their clothes” video?
Out Of Here Powell’s dolls are one of the examples I used in that video (she started them when she was 13), but there are many many others!
I loved this! I'm excited to be a new subscriber via CoCoVid!
Prior Attire was first exposure.
