Talk-Around: unlike "Reverse" which reverses the TX and RCV frequencies, it shifts the TX frequency to the RCV frequency, essentially putting it into simplex mode on the RCV frequency . . . allowing you to "talk around" a repeater and not go through it. Helpful if you're out of range of the repeater input but within range of someone using it.
Talk-around just bypasses the repeater shift so that you are basically using the receive frequency in simplex. It's used mostly in commercial radios for close proximately traffic to keep from tying up the repeater.
The benefit of F 123 option is when it picks up another band you put the channel you talk most on F1,2 or 3. It will switch back to transmit from the other band you are receiving on.
The newest versions imported into the US are locked to the amateur band only but I was able to get my TH-350s unlocked. You have to load up the software and read from the radio then select the frequency range tab in the software and select the version that covers 136-174 & 400-480 and then write this to the radio and you can now RX and TX outside the amateur bands. The radios that are currently on the market locked to amateur bands only will show as 144-148 & 420-450 when you select the frequency range tab and the only other option available in the software is the 136-174 & 400-480.
@@k2cjbradio After being disappointed when I learned that the newer radios wouldn’t go out of band even for receive I was happy to finally figure it out and wanted others to have the info.
BCL - Busy Channel Lockout is used to prevent you from transmitting on that frequency/channel as long as the radio senses an incoming signal. In other words it keeps you from "doubling" on someone else's conversation.
"Talk Around" is the ability to be on a repeater channel, but when activated puts you in a simplex or reverse mode thus bypassing the repeater. "BCL" Busy Channel Lockout when activated prevents you from transmitting on a busy channel so you can't walk on someone.
Well done video, K2CJB! I agree with you that the TYT TH350 is a great tri-band radio for the price. It is an odd bird in some respects, but the good outweighs the bad in my opinion. I'd like to see the menu settings expanded in several ways, such as being able to select colors, etc. But then I do like the clean black-on-white look, too. The VFO button issue seems to be a problem with Chirp, at least it is for me. The TYT CPS is so limited, though, it is barely better than programming via the keypad: no copy and paste, no Shift Direction, etc. I also ordered mine from Let's Get Ready. The included tri-band antenna is a winner in my book! It's working as well as the Nagoya 320a I have on another radio, and as well as an Abbree foldable tri-band I have on yet another HT. The bottom line is this: a very good radio at a very nice price. I'll likely order another one from Bob at Let's Get Ready soon. -Richard, KD9VLV
Thanks! And Bob at Let’s Get Ready is awesome to deal with. The triband antenna is a home run too. I use this HT a lot and have had no troubles with it. Yeah, their programming software is clunky. Luckily I haven’t had to change the programming all that much.
There are many things to like about the TH-350 radio, but a few things drive me crazy: First, maybe you can get by with only 128 memories in your area with a dual-band handheld radio, but this is a true tri-band radio, so would it kill TYT to add more memories? C'mon, what's a bump to 512 memories going to add to the OEM cost of the radio, $1 perhaps? Second, the alpha-numeric display only lets me store 5 character names for the memory name using software/cable, yet shows 8 numeric characters on the display, so many repeaters with 6 character names won't show up properly on the display. Seriously TYT? Third, the tiny 1600mAh standard battery really needs a big brother, but nothing so far seems available. Fourth, would it kill TYT to offer one tri-band antenna for this radio instead of one 144/440 and one 144/222 antenna? The first 50 or 60 times replacing one antenna for another antenna may not be an issue, but trust me it gets old quick.
It seems your version is different than mine. In the TYT software, you have TH-350US, I have TH-350. Maybe that's why I can't make the channel names to display correctly. In the software, the channel name is limited to 5 characters. BTW. Is it possible to turn FM radio on? Both TYT and Chirp software make it possible to store FM radio frequencies, but I have no idea how to make it work.
You have to put in an ani code for the radio I'd to work in the programming. The older tyts had ani code 8088 or some other number as a default from the factory.

Note: I've done a side by side comparison of this HT with 2 other HT's (Yaesu VX-170 & Baofeng UV5R) during my QSO with the other station and the received audio on those radios under the same conditions was excellent.
