I agree with the tensions part about the duel, even though I love this book they were like "okay time to fight to the death, urgh so much tension! let's go explode a fountain and paint the whole city in nice pastel colors"

The reason Nikoli and Vika are trying to kill each other is because they have to kind of earn the power the other one has, and the only way to get the other one's power is if they die, so killing the other enchanter is them winning their power.

I loved this book, it was one of my favorites to read last year. I went into the book thinking "another fantasy competition book, so original" since it seems like so many fantasy books lately has some big arena-style competition. I actually like how the competition is more subtle/hidden from the rest of the world, and the book is based more in character decisions and interactions than the competition. I know it has its flaws (I also didn't like the love triangle) but I still loved this book so much.

I absolutely loved this book. Nikolai is my fav character and tbh the love triangle was not the main part of the book so it did not bother me. It is full of twists which make you get more anticipated to finish it. Can't wait to buy the second book.

Omg I just read this and I also hated the love triangle, for the same reasons you mentioned in your spoiler section!! I had the same feelings about who should be with who and how unnecessary and forced the love triangle was! Otherwise I did enjoy the book but felt it could’ve been so much more without that. Pasha was my favorite character also. Still interested in reading the second book though sometime.

So I don't know why but I loved the couple made between Vika and Nikolai , I shiped them so much and the ending just tore me appart because I loved Nikolai and I didn't wanted him to die but I knew that this was going to happen. I totally agree with you about Vika because at the beggining I just hated her and I don't know why but I really loved the book and I can't wait for the next one :D

I actually love love-triangles and I hated this one lol. You're right, insta-love all over the place. Pasha was my favorite too though. I may have to re-read this... I only gave it two stars when I read it back in June haha but I did get Night Circus vibes and I do love that book.

I loved this book! I thought the descriptions of the different magical feats were just amazing, and the love triangle didn't really bother me. The only thing that disappointed me was the sort of nonexistent Cinderella subplot--there were constant references and hints that the story might turn out to follow the Cinderella story, but it fizzled out about 2/3 of the way through and never really tied in in the end. Nevertheless, it was a great read and offered a beautiful story set in a magical Imperial Russia!

The winner gets to be this powerful magician and capable of killing someone but they decide to decorate the city... It was so lame! I was expecting so much more.

I actually did not like it all. It feels like a complete rip off of The Night Circus. I hate it when books are way too similar to another book; to me that seems too lazy
