He kind of did, yugi did make it possible for yami to open the door to after life by defeating him, but to actually open the door yami had to say his real name out loud wich he did, tristan and tea even tried to make him stay but he didn't want to, since like ishizu and yugi said "the souls of the dead do not belong in the living realm" and because yami wanted to be able to FINALLY rest after being alive for over 5000 and solving all kinda of world crisis, its also said that he now rules as a god in another realm, the same realm where kaiba goes to have a final duel with him in the dsod movie
