LIDAR (A new sonar technology) has only been used in a portion of the northern Maya world and has recently discovered thousands of cities/buildings/complex edifices/farming valleys/etc. in what is now known as the Peten jungle. Historians have long underestimated the population of Mesoamerica, but in the Peten area alone the LIDAR tech has forced people to re-estimate the population of the Peten area alone in the 1st millenia to be at least 20 million people (and this number will be increased by anyone following the data) - essentially more than half of Europe's population at the time in that one area alone. Because of LIDAR countless new discoveries in the last couple of years are being made, including that there was a Mayan Empire in the first millennia that was ruled by a dynasty known as the Snake Kings
It's funny to find similarities between cultures in mythology. In Finnish folklore, there's a creature called Näkki, who also lives in lakes and rivers and lures it's victims to a watery grave. Supposedly the Näkki could take the form of a beautiful man or woman and sing like a siren. I guess drowning is a universal, valid fear when living close to water.
Since it's been recently confirmed that oral tradition holds historical truths (like with the Australian Aboriginal tribes' preservation of Australia's geography to c. 10,000 BC and some prehistoric creatures), I wonder if the ahuizotl is also a preservation of a prehistoric creature of some kind.
I think this creature was influenced by perhaps a species of otter relative to the Brazilian River Otter which is highly aggressive... That's my speculation as in Ireland the Barn Owl could've influenced the tale of the Banshee

Well I first started doing history videos that were 'big productions' in the sense that they were multi-part series styled after the History Channel. While I am extremely proud of these I now find a lot more liberty in shorter videos with a simpler style. It turns out that as long as the topic is interesting the presentation doesn't have to be incredible. Don't let the process hold you back. Find interesting topics, develop a simple format, and deliver it consistently. I make a lot of videos using a basic video editor with transitions between images. Now I've added some slightly more professional animations in AfterEffects but it really isnt necessary.

I think you might find some caiman or large river otters but nothing that dangerous. Drowning in and of itself can be a big threat though.
