Ahuizotl - The Water Beast (Aztec Mythology)

- The Ahuizotl is one the Aztecs' many monsters of mythology which grabs its prey with a hand on its tail, drowning them in the depths below. This has to be one of the more frightening creatures out there, especially if you lived on the island city of Tenochtitlan!

In South Africa, they have the Tokoloshe.
My grandma told me stories about the workers on her farm who used to put their beds up on stilts so the Tokoloshe couldn't reach them, and when my grandpa would hunch over with a cane and make wierd noses at dusk, they would run away screaming, thinking the Tokoloshe was there 😅

@yadadajr LOL if you compare them pre-rome nations they compare. But compared to spain? They are nothing. Nothing. Spain only had 600 men army and conquered them. Army is not everything, but the aztecs were nothing impressive
@yadadajr dude in 1529 aztecs were in their Glory days . They had a giant army and they still somehow lost to 600 european men and it was relatively easy. Imagine if they brought a real army. Smallpox started spreading widely after the spanish conquered mexico not before.
P.S. syphilis is a disease that originated in america and was transferrd to europe. Just shows how much history you know

I think there was another folk Aztec ghost that was a decapitated human body carrying an axe that went throwing axe blows blindly, people who wandered in the woods by night might encounter him and be killed, others would only just hear the blows getting closer, and run for their lives.
As Mesoamerican cultures enthusiast, I really appreciate this series on Aztec/Mexica culture. Didn't expected it on this channel.

There's no "h" sound in Ahuizotl. In Classical Nahuatl it would be pronounced "ah-WEE-tsotl," with a long /aa-/ sound that means 'water' compounded to /witso-/ 'beast' and suffixed with the article /-tl/. "Hui" is just how Spaniards spelled the syllable /wi/; the English would have spelled it "wee".

Okay this is epic. My favorite “mythological” monster is the Headless Horseman because I grew up in Sleepy Hollow, NY. The town is famous because of him and the story written by Washington Irving, whose grave is in Sleepy Hollow

Part of the original Dutch settlement, actually. Might have been incorporated into the local lore from Irish troops stationed in the area during the Revolution, though.

The headless horseman is of Celtic folklore. The Celts use to span most of Europe including parts of Germany, France, Belgium, and some Slavic lands. Celts were later pushed into Ireland, Island of Man, Britain, and Brittany. So what is Celtic is the seed of folklore for all types of people. Their are even Celts in the Bible.

There is certainly a similarity, im inclined to think that is because of the xoloitzcuintle you can look it up in google is an ancient dog from Mexico and looks alike the chupacabra and ahuizotl, i think the dog from Disneys COCO is a representation, its clever actually because they where supposed to guide the dead to other realms. Im sorry for my clunky english its hard to write in a cellphone

I had started to work on it a while back but got sidetracked with this series on Mesoamerica and next plan to pivot to ancient China for the upcoming 3 Kingdoms game. I'd like to get back to it after that though and probably release an extra video to accompany it.

You should totally do a video on LIDAR and the discoveries being done in the Peten in the last 2 years! LIDAR (A new sonar technology) has only been used in a portion of the northern Maya world and has recently discovered thousands of cities/buildings/complex edifices/farming valleys/etc. in what is now known as the Peten jungle. Historians have long underestimated the population of Mesoamerica, but in the Peten area alone the LIDAR tech has forced people to re-estimate the population of the Peten area alone in the 1st millenia to be at least 20 million people (and this number will be increased by anyone following the data) - essentially more than half of Europe's population at the time in that one area alone. Because of LIDAR countless new discoveries in the last couple of years are being made, including that there was a Mayan Empire in the first millennia that was ruled by a dynasty known as the Snake Kings

It's funny to find similarities between cultures in mythology. In Finnish folklore, there's a creature called Näkki, who also lives in lakes and rivers and lures it's victims to a watery grave. Supposedly the Näkki could take the form of a beautiful man or woman and sing like a siren. I guess drowning is a universal, valid fear when living close to water.
Wonder if Näkki and Ahuizotl would get along.

Since it's been recently confirmed that oral tradition holds historical truths (like with the Australian Aboriginal tribes' preservation of Australia's geography to c. 10,000 BC and some prehistoric creatures), I wonder if the ahuizotl is also a preservation of a prehistoric creature of some kind.

Have you seen the Amazon giant otters? There used to be otters there too. I'm sure it must have been a subspecies of them.
I think this creature was influenced by perhaps a species of otter relative to the Brazilian River Otter which is highly aggressive... That's my speculation as in Ireland the Barn Owl could've influenced the tale of the Banshee

Well I first started doing history videos that were 'big productions' in the sense that they were multi-part series styled after the History Channel. While I am extremely proud of these I now find a lot more liberty in shorter videos with a simpler style. It turns out that as long as the topic is interesting the presentation doesn't have to be incredible. Don't let the process hold you back. Find interesting topics, develop a simple format, and deliver it consistently. I make a lot of videos using a basic video editor with transitions between images. Now I've added some slightly more professional animations in AfterEffects but it really isnt necessary.
