- Born in 1892, Zanelli was Chilean by birth with an Italian father. He sang at the Met as a baritone from 1919-1922. However, he found some roles to be too heavy for his voice. So, in 1923 he went to Italy to retrain his voice and emerged from it as a tenor. He came to be regarded as the principal Italian Heldentenor of his day. His Otello was likened to that of the great Francesco Tamagno. This beautiful 1929 recording of Un di, all' azzurro spazio from Andrea Chenier is one of his best. Zanelli died at the early age of 43 in 1935. Enjoy this rarely heard recording of a truly great artist with a magnificently gorgeous voice.

my late friend solon alberti was accompanist to Zanelli both as a baritone and a tenor. Fifty years later he was still raving about this wonderful man and his miraculous voice.

Era de nacionalidad chilena, como otro grande baritono/tenor: Ramón Vinay.
Renato Zanelli murió antes de tiempo: a sus 43 años.

Gran voz y extraordinaria. en estas voces,del pasado es donde hay que elegir al cantante del siglo20 pero un grupito, desconocido, creo que eligió a uno que es muy inferior, no se sabe por que o ¿en que?.. Al escuchar al Gran Maestro Franco Corelli en esta aria se nota muy similar la interpretación a ésta, ¡'se habrá inspirado en ella?. Hoy en día no existen voces como estas, tan bellas,potentes, de amplio registro, de magistrales interpretaciones¿por que?..pieri..
totalmente de acuerdo.
A partir de los años 1960 se generó un cambio importante en la forma de cantar lírico y esto con el correr de los años a modificado notoriamente la calidad y sonidos de los cantantes. Se paso de una escuela de canto (principio de siglo 20) que privilegiaba el canto natural, con la laringe baja y espacio en la faringe para obtener con esto voces con emisiones sonoras, limpias y estables, a un modo de canto con emisiones nasales, constreñidas y apretadas, haciendo que el volumen sea reducido y el canto natural desaparezcan.
Los casos mas notorios hoy entre otros los de Jonas Kaufman o Diego Flores, pero hay muchos mas.
En los comenterios nombran, también a R. Vinay gran tenor,nacido y creiado en chile, con estudios musicales y canto en Europa. Renato Zanelli, tambien chileno,con estudios de música y canto en Europa.Brillaron los dos en el mundo operistico por sus grandes y extraordinarias voces e interpretaciones En Chile en el puerto de Valparaíso esta el palacio de los Zanelli, que ahora tiene el nombre del señor que se los compró cuando los hermanos Zanelli se fueron. Hoy es un museo de arte.
Ramón Vinay nació en Chile, pero creció en México y estudió con el maestro mexicano José Person, quien fue maestro de la fenomenal soprano mexicana Mercedes Mendoza y del tenor José Mojica, también de Jorge Negrete quien se dedicó a cantar popular y hacer películas musicales con enorme éxito.
Te recomiendo que reacciones en TH-cam a la soprano mexicana Mercedes Mendoza para que veas la clase de cantante y el maestro que debió ser José Person quien enseñó la técnica a Ramón Vinay.
En México el padre de Vinay tenía una gran empresa que fabricaba cajas de cartón.
Fue muy amigo de mi maestro de canto, el tenor José Pulido.
Si reaccionas a unas entrevistas a Ramón Vinay (2), que le hicieron en la televisión mexicana en el año de 1983/84, en una de ellas menciona el nombre del tenor José Pulido.
José Pulido, fue quien animó a Ramón Vinay a cantar como tenor, pues vocalizaban juntos y aprendió a montar la voz como tenor.
Reacciona en TH-cam al barítono Gustavo Escudero quien canta el Prólogo de Payasos de León Cavallo y quien fue alumno del tenor José Pulido.

Aber ich habe so viele Tenöre gehört und verglichen, die diese Arie aus Andreea Chernier gesungen haben und komme immer wieder zurück zu meinem Guiseppe Giacomini, der meines Erachtens diese Arie zur wirklichen Vollendung singend führt Da stimmt einfach aklles;
Stimme, Dramatik, Fülle und einer Technik die einfach bewundernswert ist.

Soy de la família Zanelli en Brasil. Mi tia por parte de padre Leda Coelho de Freitas también cantante de operas. El hermano de Renato Zanelli era Carlos Morelli también cantante.

The more I hear this man it becomes increasingly clear to me that he developed in his short life a real spinto voice that was superior to Martinelli & on par with and perhaps even surpassing contemporaries such as Merli & Pertile . Zanelli’s voice seemed to have a similar weight & timbre to Domingos & with a more expansive & reliable upper register. Whoever is posting these recordings of this fabulous artist has my undying gratitude. Zanelli’s earlier recordings as a baritone are superb as well. He may be the greatest example of an artist to make fine recordings as BOTH an operatic baritone & tenor. Had he not died only in his early forties & continued to develop he might very well have been THE Otello of the century.
I do not wish, by the way, to denigrate Martinelli’s qualities as an artist, particularly as OTELLO, but the fact remains that he should have introduced his OTELLO some 5 or 10 years prior to when he did. Martinelli’s timbre has taken me awhile to appreciate but not his interpretation of this role.
As he continued to perform it, though, age was creeping up on him & the recordings he made in his first year or so in singing this role represent
his best artistically & vocally in my view.
Peter Graham Zanelli is legit a very heavy dramatic tenor. Domingo is a lyric tenor with bad highs so he calls himself 'dramatic tenor'
Placido was fine but Zanelli sounds like a different class of tenor entirely. He is the best otello on record of course.
Ha ha... I'm glad you asked. All I heard was him singing about 30 seconds of "Ora e per sempre addio" from Otello, it was a clip in Microsoft's Encarta encyclopedia. I was very impressed with it though. I too have looked for more recordings of him but they do seem very hard to find, regrettably.
Some of his phrasing reminds of Caruso alot.

Que tiene que ver Francisco Araiza con Zanelli? Araiza es un tenor lírico-ligero que ha aboradado papeles también gramáticos pero Zanelli era un barítono que se convirtió en heldentenor, totalmente dramático, heróico. En serio que afán de difamar, mejor disfruten de cada uno de estos cantantes. Ciao!
I'm still looking for a recording of his brother who sang under the stage name Carlo Morelli if anyone has any information.
Carlo Morelli estuvo viviendo en México y se casó con una soprano mexicana a quien conocí por los años 1985.
En México se instauró el concurso de cantantes de Ópera Carlo Morelli creado por el Instituto de Bellas Artes. Duró al menos 10 años ese concurso que cada año se presentaba en el teatro de las Bellas Artes de México.
Recuerdo que el tenor Ramón Vargas ganó el segundo llevado a cabo en 1985/86.
Tuve un disco de él cantando Arias de Ópera como barítono y era muy buen cantante, aunque quizás no tan bueno como su hermano Renato.
