- Hey folks! In today’s video we’re back with more Gold Stake Balatro. Obelisk is a Joker that I’ve noticed seems to get more hate than possibly any other Joker despite it being extraordinary in certain builds. This run was a good example of that as it carried the build through the mid to late antes with just a little bit of preparation in the early game. Enjoy the video!
Balatro is a poker roguelike deck building game centered around creating powerful synergies and winning with big hands. In it, you can combine valid poker hands with unique Jokers in order to create varied synergies and builds. Earn enough chips to beat blinds, including challenging boss blinds, to make it to the next ante and progress your run!

The time I learned the strength of obelisk is when I got it after getting a bunch of scaling on runner. The tactic is to have it show up in later antes after you’ve already scaled a hand-specific joker, meaning you can pivot while maintaining the benefit your build had
Exactly. I think my gold sticker on it came from having the obvious flush heavy build on checkered deck and getting obelisk around ante 4 or 5 with some other scaled up +Mult and xMult jokers that didn't rely on flushes specifically
I used to think it was a rubbish joker too but then it hard carried one of my runs and i still have respect for it to this day

it's frustrating with the amount of loses it caused me by simply not triggering
I acknowledge that it's powerful, I just wish it was powerful in a different way. I like the idea of being made to rotate hands constantly, its the mini game of constantly counting each given hand that upsets me
Personally I think it should pulse like DNA when you're about to play a hand that resets it. That'd already make it a whole lot more fun because you don't have to constantly check.

Ngl, I completely missed the potential of obelisk until this video, by scaling 1 thing hard in the early game. I was too stuck on the long term aspects of it being bad, but, just finishing ante 8? Totally feasible.
I DID just start playing balatro though within the past couple weeks, (which your vids basically sold to me.)
If Obelisk didn't reset when the you play a hand became the most played hand it would be massively OP TBH.
Actually my least favorite joker (that isn't the crap commons) is Vampire.
until you get that midas mask synergy and it goes to the moon
It’s still pretty good with some kind of tarot synergy and if you’re only interested in beating ante 8
@@diegogoh1340issue is, nerfed vampire is ENTIRELY balanced around this combo, which makes it mid to awful like 90% of the time.
Photochad is two commons which usually work fine on their own, which is reasonable. Needing two uncommons that are either desperation picks or temporary solutions is a tall ask. You'd have to be holding midas longer than usual for it, so you've probably got scoring covered anyways if you get the combo.

The problem is that most runs barely give you a good opportunity to pivot so even if you have a specific hand built up and obelisk could hypothetically go crazy.
The odds are slim to none that you end up pulling it off before the game outscales obelisk.

Obelisk has those extremely rare moments where it just saves utterly garbage runs and finally lets you build pivot

Okay but obelisk and constellation surely are best friends. Every hand is leveled so every hand is viable.
Your least favorite joker is Obelisk. My least favorite joker is Baron. We are not the same
issue with obelisk is that while it's situationally strong, it's really not uniquely strong, but requires a unique amount of irritating checking to not accidentally ruin your build
im not thinky enough for obelisk the one time i tried to make it work my mind exploded
I'm not sure if "it's good when you have a pile of junk in your joker roster (36:30) by ante 10" and "why isn't this run dead?" is the best sales pitch, but that's the one we've gotten so far. Also, just in general, this didn't come across like a run you enjoyed playing that much, either.
Interestingly enough, the full house tying with high card there at the end *did not* reset the obelisk. TIL

Unfortunately Roffle is simply the unluckiest person alive
i picked up an early obelisk on a plasma deck stuntman run and was just able to play pairs until the stuntman stopped carrying me and then all i had to do was play anything that wasnt a pair and win
oh also i picked up the obelisk from a negative tag
