- Kurt Elling playing "Golden Lady" (Stevie Wonder) at the New Morning in Paris on November 10, 2009. Laurence Hobgood (piano), Harish Raghavan (bass), Otis Brown III (drums) with special guest Ernie Watts (saxo).
How the hell can you no respect a singer that makes a great version of a great song from one of the best musicians in history? nothing but admiration for both Stevie Wonder and Kurt Elling..
Called my beautiful wife Golden Lady when we were dating. 43 years of happy marriage and cancer took her from me. Played this song at her services.
I cried that day, and I am crying now.
13 years later, and absolutely adore this performance! Thank you for this. Please never take it down. ❤️🎵
Man Ernie still kills to this day!!! Kurt is by far the most innovative and skillful male vocalist in the jazz world today! He is more than a vocalist, he is a true musician. A rare quality to find in a singer in our time!
Funny that of all the comments and well-deserved praises for this live cover of a classic Stevie Wonder melody, not a single listener mentioned the brilliance of piano maestro Laurence Hobgood, whose many years of collaboration with Kurt Elling reaped jem after classic contemporary jem. Thank you both for your
many wonderful years of sultry jazz experiences.
well said!
Was disappointed when they separated...
I'm late to the party/ was listening to Water Colors as I was riding down the expressway on a beautiful sun filled afternoon and this was playing. Really I was blown away.
🔥FIRE🔥 !!!!! HE DID THAT!!! And the BAND!!!!! My GOODNESS!!!!!
All time live favorite! Kurt hits incredible high notes and Ernie Watts' sax solo soars. Formidable!
This is probably my favorite song by KE. Damn just so beautiful! I've been consistently listening to this since january and it's that piano that sticks. Just unbelievable how amazing of a track this is. I cannot get it out of my head.
Steppin Out, Effendi and Resolution should be added...
Got turned on to this brother about a year ago and have become a fan. Will turn on my friends this cat. Nice range too.
Didn't think I would like this as such a Stevie fan but I have been converted. X
Whenever I'm feeling blue or uninspired I play this piece and without fail I get a charge like no other. God bless the synergy...
Stevie in 7 - why the hell not! Love ya Kurt - thanks for a great vid JazzOlive!
Love the song, love Kurt’s voice. I could listen to him ALL the day long.
As a HUGE fan of this record i love what he and Ernie Watts are doing !!!!! just beautiful...white hot !
@pbksound I just came back from the Detroit Jazz festival hours ago.I was so lucky to see this group perform. It will be forever in my memory.Just sensational.
That's Mr. Ernie watts right there!!!
I think I've watched this video around 100 times!
Oh my! The energy of these excellent musicians can only be appreciated backing an artist as talented as K E.
A true song stylist! Not anyone can pull off a Stevie Wonder tune! Thanks TheJazzolive !
My favorite singer. Seen him five times...
7/8 during the verses. That's a hella crazy time meter...and I'm lovin it!!
Man, that vocal range! Kurt Elling has to be my favorite male jazz vocalist of the modern times. A true living legend of jazz, quoted from K-jazz, 88.1 FM.
WOW, I;m blown away... Well done you!
I'm sure Stevie LOVES this version. Great performance. Good post.
it's been a long time that I haven't heard a solo so simple and so complex at the same time. fantastic musician and player
@MidnightSwinger when a voice is one and only instrument blended with the rest of the band. Out of this world!
This is truly an above the music experience. Ernie precipitates a musical entrainment to his brilliant Sax. Kurt you added another layer to your shine thanks to Ernie. You not only sang and scatted, I believe you even spoke in tongues on this one. The numinous was hovering near. Talk about upping your game. Welcome to musical blessedness.
Aaaah! Love, love, love me some Kurt! Can't wait for him to record this.
This is my gold right there. Music so good you come one in awhile to listen to it to cheer you whole month up.
That sax solo is on another level
Can't stop watching this ......... it's truly celestial!!!
Me too!
Kurt Elling, the man, the myth, the legend. He is a Jazz singers Jazz singer. We really appreciate your divine guidance through everything and always keep your early Green Mill days in our hearts. You make us shiver with your groves. Move sweepingly through our lives. Your ears is our voice and your voice our heart. You're also a very snazzy dresser! Get that suit and get on the road again! Your voice inspires us all! And if anyone asks your how you learned how to sing so well tell them to all you have to do is #openyourmouth!
Amazing performance. Any of you who haven't gotten "The Gate" yet, go buy it now! Incredible album.
Absolutely beautiful, its the vocals and saxophone for me, on another level. I can watch over and over again.
This is really Good remake, music belong to the world, has no color, no genra, just has to be good'; and this is for real good.
I like your comment, music belongs to the World 🌎! Such a beautiful and simple truth!
Double up on it Ernie!!!
I prefer this version 100x more than the one on the album--Not that the one on the album is bad, it's actually very good. It's just that Ernie Watt's solo is SO FREAKING AMAZING here!!!! I don't think Bob Mintzer could have touched it if he tried.
What a treat!
WOW!!! Awesome set!
Beatful song singing too great Kurt tnx...
i'm a huge Stevie fan and i was ready to hate this. but i gotta say, great and original.
Love it!
So fabulous lost in this music…..
What great style! Awesome vocals!
when virtuosity meets beauty...
I can't wait to hear KE sing this in his next CD, the only male singer that is still consistently innovative today!
Wow. I loved that. Ernie Watts plays great. Thanks for the chance to see and hear this.
Stevie is smiling somewhere...
To be honest I had n"t heard of Kurt Elling. A friend recommended i check him out, I'm blown away. Laughing Joe in the Isle of Man Thanks mate. JV
Love me a bit of Kurt Elling .....great composition of a Stevie classic 😊

A great rendition of great artist! I can hear the love and respect for Mr. Wonder. Beautiful 🤝
Thank you Jazzolive for posting these great high-quality videos! Superb
I've been waiting for someone to post this song in its entirety. Thank you! KE is a treasure.
Stellar performance - tight❤
@pbksound Holy hell yes!! That solo was the TRUTH! This whole thing is just so, so special. TheJazzolive, thank you SO much for posting this great performance.
This shit is so beautiful
Absolutely Wonderful))))))))))) Grazie, Lino, Per Farmi Scoprire Questa Meravigliosa Interpretazione
the sax solo is so good ,I get high listening to it......without any weed!
Aha! I've been hearing some of Kurt's music on the local jazz station here in San Antonio, but never got his name. Incredible vocal instrument! Definitely a great singer. Love his styling. Thanks for the post!
Otis Brown III keeps it all moving together.
WOW!! FABULOUS❣️
Woof! Gotta love this guy. He sure moves me to dance.
Kurt, one of my favorites
He can sing.. I would love to sing with him
Nice bass sax!!!! Kurt Elling has great energy.
Great job!
Mad sax solo
I like the cats that are versatile. Nathan East comes to mind as an example. One night he's with Eric Clapton, next Herbie Hancock. Now that M. Brecker has passed, Ernie Watts might be no.1 when it comes to versatility and sax. One night he's playing the Arthur's Theme solo, next night Kurt Elling.
Ernie watts the sax player is my idol
Beeauuutiful....
The video needs to be in HD.
Beautiful!
First this is amazing, but did anyone else see the amount of pelvic thrusting that happened around 5:45 by the sax player. that was incredible
VERY NICE REMAKE
Thank you for sharing. Having said that the sound quality of this recording is not the best... Though I am grateful to see and hear this...
Nice wit it
Pure Class.
Very well performed. I'd like to hear Will Downing performing the same song.
I was prepared to hate it to. I'm such a Stevie Wonder Fan that I called in sick for work to attend a concert and ended up in the front page of the newspaper in Color. I said it wasn't me. Well anyway, this rendition is pretty good, considering who made it.
Peace........
Terrific !
That's how its Done!!!!
is that 7/4 during the verses and 4/4 during the chorus? i think so.
mmhmmm. think i'm going to work on this on saturday! yes.
Man this sax player goes hard
i'm applauding that fucking Ernie Watts sax solo right now! SUPERB!
AWSOME!:D
It's the music man nothing but the music so help me music Brother Derek Carter Muncie Indiana keep dancing laughing living peacefully lots of love love love
loving kurt's jazz hands at 3:40 :)
Sweet!
saxophone solo 🤯🤯🤯
wtf!!! seven was never my lucky number but wow...
didn't realize it worked so well in 7
I just recently discovered Kurt after hearing him sing Pat Metheny's "Minuano" on my local college jazz station. For me, no words can describe Stevie and his music and I would think other singers would be a bit intimidated with attempting any of his songs, but Kurt truly delivers on this. Now that I've discovered Kurt, I definitely want to hear a lot more of him. His voice is blue-eyed soul personified, chillingly good. What a gift this man is! I'm happy to have discovered him. :-)
Sweeeeeet.
Thank you for this!!
What's the song that they begin right as this video ends?
That is the picture of Joy.
Does anyone know the name of the Kurt Elling song that Starts, " I'm being stalked by you.." ?
It's called "Hide the Salomé"!
🙄💚🌺🍀
Who is the sax player?
