Why dont you go to the beach like razor clam diggers do? Target a low water go 2 or 3 hours before low tide so your walking down while its going out start panning before the flood. Give you more hour's to dig

You’re absolutely right but I don’t always want to get up at 4:30 am is the issue. So I’m at the mercy of the tide by waking up around 7-8 am like a normal person. It always works out a bit different and sometimes not at all depending on the level of high tide one could easily be trapped or swept out to sea.

As a rock hunter, trying to learn gold panning, I have to share. Never start your day at low tide. Get there about 1-2 hours before because once low tide hits it immediately starts coming back in. Love your videos and hopefully will give it a try the end of this month. Thanks for the chance to learn.

    • @Goldhunter7769

I appreciate it and I do know most of the in’s and outs of when but the where is a whole other issue. When I think I have the tide figured out at one spot, the landscape is different at the next. Also depends on how high the high tide is. If it’s a low high tide I know I’m fine in some spots. I’m fairly careful because I watched a family almost get swept out to sea with their dog. It’s one of my
      Older videos actually! Thanks again

    • @Goldhunter7769

The tide actually has a cycle about hour one foot raise or drop depending on incoming or outgoing. Low tide is best for open beaches to work. I’m not sure about lower tides in the winter but now I’m curious.

That said, Tuesday looking like a ,6.6 high tide around noon so I'll head out and give it a go,!

The "Million Dollar Beach", historically, is Whiskey Run. The story of Whiskey Run Beach is almost totally forgotten and buried under the beach sands of time.
In December of 1852 two brothers, John and Peter Groslius, who were French-Canadian and Native American by decent, were set ashore with a long boat and enough supplies to allow them to travel inland where they hoped to find virgin gold fields among the Oregon Coastal Mountains. But they'd set ashore too late in the day to start their adventure and decided to unpack their supplies and camp on the beach to await the morning. Not long after sunrise and while attempting to ready themselves for their inland journey, one of the brothers noticed what looked like fine gold shining in the sun's rays among the sands of the beach and creek. After panning a small amount of the black sands he declared "this is gold!" After prospecting up and down the beach a mile or so they settled on an area about 100 yards south of the mouth of Whiskey Run creek, a creek which had earned its name a few years prior owing to self-obvious reasons. The Groslius brothers worked the sands and had amassed tens of pounds of gold, almost more then they could carry.
Not wanting to leave their rich diggings but running low on supplies, one of the brothers packed himself and a small portion of his gold inland to the Trading Post of Roseburg, Oregon. He used the gold to buy a couple horses and supplies and set off back the way he'd come. Though he was careful not to tell anyone where he'd found so much gold, a man from Roseburg caught wind of his rich gold finds and stealthily followed the brother back to Whiskey Run. Long story short, almost every square foot of Whiskey Run Beach became packed with miners before the Autumn. By the Summer of 1854 the boom town of Randolf (now just a memory) had grown with two saloons, two mercantiles, and a livery stable. For reference, type in "Randolph, Oregon" in Google Earth.
The early diggings of Whiskey Run Beach were so rich and disputes among the miners were so frequent, that upon getting word of these problems the Territorial Marshal visited the beach in early 1854 and settled many of these arguments by declaring that one man's claim would be no larger than 10 feet by 10 feet. Even so, many of these early miners became fantastically wealthy. But the rich times of Whiskey Run Beach were not long to last. During the heavy winter storm of late December, 1854, and early January, 1855, the Great Sea sent enormous waves to completely strip the gold sands from the beach leaving nothing but bedrock and a few blond sands behind. It appeared that the beach's once rich gold sands had been returned to the sea.
Within a few months all of the miners, save one Native American Family, had left the town of Randolph. In 1921 the Oregon State geologist compiled records of all of Oregon's gold yielding beaches and concluded that Whiskey Run was indeed one of the richest gold beaches in the world. The geologist had enough data to calculate that at the recovery efficiencies common to the time, and given the burlap cloth and mercury commonly used to recover the fine beach gold, that the richest black sand ores could have approached 50 to 100 ounces gold per ton.
