espace tricot has some of my favorite free patterns.
turtle dove is an amazing free sweater pattern from them that is also fit for beginners. there are two versions of the pattern, turtle dove and turtle dove II. turtle dove is a bulky weight and turtle dove II is a worsted weight.
they also have some good accessory patterns. cooler side of warm is a worsted weight cowl that worked up super quick for me.

I totally love the Two of Wands Ballerina Wrap Top!! It's so pretty, the pattern is free and I didn't find it hard to follow at all. My sister even made it as her second ever knitting project, and it was really successful. I'm going to make myself a second one for sure.

Thanks for the great recommendations! There are so many great free patterns out there! I'm going to be starting the Brick sweater soon. It is a simple raglan pullover and a free pattern.
Also, I can't remember the name of the blanket but Mama in a Stitch just came out with a really pretty blanket pattern.

If you are knitting brioche flat, I think that the Arne and Carlos tutorial is worth a look (if you haven’t seen it already) - I used it to do a heel flap on a sock and felt that it was a pretty successful first attempt at brioche!

Random and not quite for the fall, but I’m knitting the peekaboo tee by Knifty Knittings. It’s some ribbing with cotton worsted weight yarn, since there is no shaping and all stockinette (minus the ribbed bottom) it’s a very therapeutic and quick knit. It’s perfect for the spring and summer months. She has a video tutorial and the free blog post on her site
