If you dont think 20mph+ winds affect passing just stop talking football. Kicking was bad on both ends too. Give QBs a pass. This weather wasn't ideal for passing.
@@324pennstateyes it was! Punts were weak and the 40 yard field goal barely cleared the uprights I was there, I couldn't imagine kicking or throwing the ball yesterday
Zach Seyko on Lock On Nittany Lions pointed out as well that Drew Aller needed to wait a fraction of a second longer to connect on longer pass plays. At the same time, on a cold, windy day in State College (and I've lived in central PA for several years, I know), there was no need for him once the Penn State ground game got going in the 2nd quarter (along with his own nifty 3rd down RUNS). The ESPN win probability meter had Penn State at 97% when they went up 21-0. After that, all the offense needed to do was not give up cheap scores and eat up the clock. When you can put in your back-up players in the 4th quarter in this kind of game, you know the game's in hand. The game resembled to some degree Notre Dame's win over Indiana. It was a dominant defense and a sufficient offense playing a predictably low scoring game in cold, wintry conditions. Both IU and SMU scored junk TD's at the end to make the game score seem more respectable than the actual game. That said, kudos to a gutsy SMU team that still played hard when things weren't going their way.
That's my base case, hard to predict the future but Penn State sure has looked like a ridiculously solid team these last 2 games and if Georgia's backup QB isn't better than their starter Carson Beck, I think Penn State beats them.
Penn State has played no one. Jennings (SMU QB) played terribly. He had tons of open receivers. Neither Oregon nor PSU will be in the Natty. Penn State also supports pedophiles. They did it for 30 years knowingly.
@@omnimoeish I think they get disrespected because they cant beat Ohio State. How shitty is it for Oregon to go undefeated and have to beat Ohio State and Texas on their way to Penn State or UGA? Huge Ducks fan but man that looks like an awful draw.
SMU was basically made or broken on what kind of pressure was on Kevin Jennings for better or worse and in that cold with a slippery ball and with Penn State's way better defensive line, it was just a matter of time before Penn State was too much. That being said SMU didn't let Penn State extend their half time lead of 28 the whole second half, so there's that.
We go through three and out and they run right down the field. I thought we were gonna lose that game and if Jennings goes for the first down instead of throwing that pass on fourth down, who knows
Yeah kind of ridiculous to be playing games these important in the cold like that. I don't think it would've help Indiana or SMU win or anything, those 2 teams were clearly outclassed but I think the games should all just be at neutral sites somewhere warmer for these late December/early January games.
@omnimoeish ok SEC man. Just go back to Florida. This is football. I guess you think the bears, vikings, packers, vikings etc. shouldn't have home games anymore after November. Just an awful take.
Unfortunate mistakes for SMU, PSU benefited from those gifts. Two pick six's and other turnovers, impossible to come back from. To think PSU dominated would be false, lets be real; gifts are gifts. Those interceptions could have been caught by any player in HS. Hole was impossible to climb out from, and yes i was there. Impressive turnout and very cold. See y'all next year.
Penn State dodged a bullet with getting an easy opponent with SMU. Alabama shot themselves in the foot first and for most but this also shows you why strength of schedule plays a bigger role than your win/loss record when choosing a team that deserves a spot in the playoff. Alabama vs Penn State would have been a better game. You’re lying if you disagree.
If the playoffs were made of all unranked teams, Alabama would have still lost in the first round. Maybe earn your way in...but don't cry to the committee when you don't.
SMU would have scored at least a touchdown on Oklahoma. Jalen Milroe on the road is bad, especially when he has to rely on a hard count. The crowd at Penn State would have obliterated Alabama's offense much the same way we did against SMU.
Agreed, with both of you, but my Nittany Lions 🦁 will get a second chance at the Ducks in the national title game, and obviously T. Allen knows how to adjust!!!!!! WE ARE
@@omnimoeish But Tom never was as aggressive against Oregon as he was today. He kept sending more than SMU could handle. Didn’t do that on big championship game
Never in the history of college football has there ever been 12 teams that might be the best team. Typically it’s between 3-6 teams. That’s it. A 12-team playoff is stupid. It’s always been a terrible idea. And, it’s giving us terrible games.
So every other division of college football and every other non-Olympic college sport has a true large field playoff to determine its champion, and they're all doing it wrong?
@@jonbutton3259 No. They do it differently. Div 1A football is unique to all other sports in the makeup of the postseason. Other sports (e.g., Div 1AA football, basketball/march madness) sort of use the postseason championship tournament as double-duty. It crowns a champion and it also rewards teams/coaches for having had a good season, even if those teams/coaches won't necessarily compete for a national championship. E.g., inviting a 21-11 UCLA team to the march madness tournament is a nice nod to a good season, but the bruins aren't competing for a national championship as a 10-seed. Div 1A football is different. It is unique in that it has a well formed mechanism by which to recognize and reward teams/coaches for having had a good season: bowl games. So, it is uniquely positioned to have a championship tournament that is not polluted with teams that are unworthy of carrying the mantle of "best team this season." Teams can still be rewarded for having a good season by going to a prestigious bowl game and playing an exhibition game. That allows the championship tournament to comprise only teams that are truly in the conversation. That has never, ever been more than 5 or 6 teams and is usually much fewer than that.

Didn't really need to be aggressive once it's 28-0 at halftime
But agreed the offense was mid most of the day. They made plays when they needed to

21 points off turnovers after giving up just 31 all year…

Your hands just _do not_ work right in that cold. Your brains tells hands to do something, and it's like there's high latency.
