    I watched an interview with Lou Gramm where he talked about recording this song, how they left the recording studio to watch Jr. play nearby and asked if he'd record a solo for this song, and Lou did say that Jr. did record several sax lines that they edited together. Interestingly he also said that sometime later they played this song in concert and brought Jr. Walker up to play the sax solo and apparently he had heard the recording by then, and played it exactly how it was edited together on the record.

    Found a good double F# and double G# fingering for this/generally: (1 2 3 + side C) for the double G# (same as reg altissimo G#), and then can slide right into the double F# by lifting the 2 pearl (1 3 + side C). I like (1 3 4) or "split F" a bit better for initially getting out the double F# but it can play a little sharp. "Split F" is also a good double G fingering. Can slide from one to the other.

    In fact, yes, according to Lou Gramm himself, the solo was recorded as different phases separated and not in one take from start to finish. Jr Walker made a longer solo and the band did "cut" the best parts and assembled them together. But Gramm added that Walker once played the solo note-for-note during some concerts. But this was not the case during the recording sessions. I was a bit disappointed by that, to be honest...

    • @GetYourSaxTogether
      @GetYourSaxTogether  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that super knowledgeable comment. I've got a recording of that one time he played it with them live somewhere. It's longer than the recorded version, so he plays the full recorded solo then jams out a bit more which is cool. As I think I mention of the video, it seems impossible for him to make one of the leaps that he makes in one take!

  • @Saxrasta
    @Saxrasta ปีที่แล้ว

    I was told that Junior Walker was so drunk when he did the session for Urgent. They just let him play along and recorded him. Then they cut & spliced bits together to create the solo we know from the recording.

    Wonderful, but this is too much for me, Jamie already asked you for a very high video for alto saxophone (how to gradually get to very high notes), don't forget it when you can. Thank you

      Ooof! Not sure if I can bring myself to do that as I've had to play it SO many times on soul destroying gigs! lol Do you play alto or tenor?

    I’m trying to tackle this on alto. I can’t even get to the altissimo before struggling. I understand the rhythm but my brain won’t cooperate with my fingers! 😅

    How about the sax solo in Rio by Duran Duran?

    • @GetYourSaxTogether
      @GetYourSaxTogether  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Great suggestion. Fear not, it's on "the list" to be done at some point. Thing about this channel is - everything will get done at some point in the next 10 years, you just might have to be patient! lol J:-)

    This is a real challenge but great fun, many thanks Jamie! Have you considered doing 'Look at little sister' by Stevie Ray Vaughan, with Joe Sublett on sax? He plays a very tasty solo! Cheers

    Hi Jamie
    Your Tenor Sax looks a different colour in this video. Is it your 1974 MK6 or a different sax.
    Just wondered if you practice with your main horn or use a less valuable one.
    Or do you just use the same horn regardless of situation.

    • @GetYourSaxTogether
      @GetYourSaxTogether  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've only got one horn but the green screen filter takes out the green colour in it in the edit making it look a bit weird! lol

    • @GetYourSaxTogether

      Altissimo notes have to be produced by making the right resonant shape with your vocal tract. I'm doing an altissimo video in a few weeks. J:-)

    Hi Jamie, fantastic stuff as usual (love your tone). I can get a reasonable way into the altissimo on both tenor and alto, but these alti-altissimo F# and G# on tenor are insane. One of my favourite sax solos is Marc Russo's alto solo on the live version of "Trouble in Paradise" by Huey Lewis - see th-cam.com/video/kk9TFRmWCH0/w-d-xo.html at the 2:28 mark and again near the end of the song at 3:36. Here's a challenge for you, Jamie! And what a great band Huey L and the News were! Cheers.

    One afternoon in August 1983 I got a phone call. This guy says " I'm Jr. Walker's bass player and Jr. needs a new bass player. Only thing is you have to leave this afternoon ". Well I had already seen Jr. Walker play and his band sucked and they were miserable so I turned down the gig. Besides I was a great sax player, keyboardist and Guitarist and I didn't want to hear that same honking pentatonic lick every night. I finally met him in person in '92 as we were staying in the same hotel in Albuquerque. He was kind of an asshole. I grew up in the mid 60's listening to his Shotgun album so I shouldn't dis him. He brought a lot of people a lot of joy and he suffered for it. Traveling around in an old broke down Greyhound bus playing for chump change on the chitlin circuit. RIP.
