There was this Chinese "Katana" that existed in the Han dynasty(that point of time , the name "Miao dao/Miao Sword" have yet to get it's name yet") Japan did not even exist yet as a nation or an empire , let alone katanas. fast forward later on in history(Han Dynasty collapsed hundreds/Thousands of years ago ), Enter Tang Dynasty , the "Tang Dao/Tang Sword"(based on the design of the Han dynasty sword) was the Original "Katana version 1.0" , it was an Era , where Japan existed as an Nation/Empire. The Japanese Emperor even complemented that the most beautiful sword is "Tang Dao", there were cultural exchanges between both China and Japan. Thus this "Tang Dao" was shipped , copied and remodeled into the "Katana version 1.1" and from there, "Japanese Katanas" were born.

Miao Dao is a 20th centaury sword so this being the originator of the katana is ZERO. Also the Chang Dao which was used during the Ming era is also a no go for the originator of the katana. Zhan Ma Dao from the Han era however is a very likely source for the early Tachi of Japan.

So out of curiosity...why the raised leg on the cuts? Other than it looks cool? Because as a martial maneuver that seems like a bad idea as you remove power from having a planted stance, reduce reach and make yourself more open to being knocked over. I prefer Jian over Dao personally however.

@@yuenhai you get more reach vs having your lead foot back...but you shouldn't be doing that unless you have a shield or some other blocking item in the other hand...or being very defensive or doing a passing cut. If you have your lead foot forward, you will get more reach. Passing cuts will give you astronomically more reach. As for power, unless you have a broken core or some other fundamental problems with your techniques, there is absolutely no way you get more power from making an attack on one foot vs a planted stance. However someone did explain to me why you would do that cut however. It's supposed to be against horse riders. You get a bit more vertical reach to maybe impale the charging horse rider better...but than the lack of balance would be an issue I would think. Not really a satisfactory answer...but not like I can actually test it either. I just know that if I had this weapon and faced a charging horseman, I would not be doing that.

Metalurigical speaking: the Katana is a bad quality sword; that is why mostly fighers carried two swords. The reason: the back of the blade was covered with clay before hardening; that gave a beautiful decoration. But it gave also much material stress; so much, that it could break easily. I once was chalenced to make a Katana in my workshop. I did; 8 hours all together. Hardness of the blade: 54 HrC, I just used good quality steel, and made it a mlling and polishing job. Allthough mine was very hard: I made a testpiece of the same material. Did not break.

I get that you were trying to capture modern action movie aesthetics, but to show of your skills this is unsuitable. Maybe do some flashy scenes like these and then a short real-time video of a form without (video ;P) cuts.
@@satnamo Right, although I do not understand if you agree with me or not. :D Clearly, about one minute of this video is really educational and matches the video title, the rest is the presentation of a form with many (video) cuts and speed changes (and without comparison between katana and miao dao). This editing makes it look very cool and flashy, but makes it more difficult to follow the details in the techniques, which is bad for education and also somewhat hides her skill (because with enough editing, everything looks good). That's why I suggested to cut down on the editing (pun intended).

I think it would be more accurate to say stabbing or poking, as it referred to it being similar to a spear as well as a sword.
