    ALTON!!! Dude damn near stole the show for me this time. I've watched Good Eats when it was released when I was 6 years old and since then looked at cooking as a science lab. Thank you sir!🤘🙏🔥🔥🔥

      Same here. I would love to have a conversation with her! It appears that Alton has some pretty awesome people behind the scenes that most people don't know about. It was awesome to meet her, especially on Star Talk of all places. This episode checked quite a few boxes for me, Lol.

      Neil makes it known his school days were marked with reports that his "behavior bordered on the disruptive". I think they were being nice to him because he got good grades. He's a class clown. They're usually the smartest. They clown around out of boredom. I did the same thing.

    "I think that... everybody needs to pay a heckuva lot [of] attention to what they put in their pie-hole. We need to be very watchful of what we're doing; we need to be more aware of where it's coming from, who's growing it, how far it's being shipped, and what kind of resources go into it. That means we're going to have to do a lot more work. We have to do more due diligence about what we eat, because it has a very, very specific and direct effect on what kind of resources we're gonna have to work with ... to colonize the rest of space with. We do have to maintain home, and we need to be better at it." ~ Alton Brown
    Freaking brilliant, perfect, and 100% *TRUE!* I'm saving this quote, as it's the absolute best I've ever heard this issue described, hands down!
    ❤❤ 👏👏 ❤❤ 👏👏 ❤❤ 👏👏 ❤❤

    • @MaryAnnNytowl
      @MaryAnnNytowl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If anyone knows what comes after "... what resources we're gonna have to work with..." and before "...to colonize the rest of space with," I'd love to know. There's no closed captioning available for this video, and I played it over & over about 25 times, and _still_ couldn't decipher anything that made sense. If you could leave a comment here with what you think he said, or maybe if they put captions on it later & it makes sense then, I'd love to have the whole quote intact!

    1) Spirulina is an algae with a ton of nutrition, including protein. NASA already carries spirulina as one of their foods. I'm surprised that Dr Douglas did not discuss that. Can they grow spirulina in space?
    2) Chickens are only slightly larger than rodents, and everybody likes them. Plus chickens lay eggs, which most people enjoy as well. Wouldn't it be much more efficient to raise chickens in space than to try to raise a cow? Can chickens live on spirulina?
    3) With all of the smart talent on this panel, how come the above points were not covered? They seem so obvious.
    Bonus) Except for the pepperoni and cheese, pizza is mostly vegetarian. Would be awesome if they could grow pizza ingredients in space.

    There is around an official manual of US Army Quartermaster about evolution of rations in WWII - from early can and hard tack to the famous K-ration.
    Many problems were the same we have in space: that food had to be light, stable, keep well, offer nutrients.
    But the perfect food was useless if the people didn't want to eat it, or picked just a part and not the bilanced full amount

    Interesting! I once did a contract doing grocery scoring. It was when I discovered we humans are pretty much omnivores. Items like ground squirrel, raw polar bear etc. The other thing we figured out if the item had salt, sugar, or fat in it the score of the item would plummet dramatically. Take for example broccoli by itself scored high, but add cheese to it and the score went from 94 to 25. Needless to say the company is no longer around. Regarding mac and cheese yeah milk, butter, flour, cheese, grainy mustard, nutmeg and once in awhile chopped up lobster or shrimp. The one food I know is the potato - can't really eat it raw but bake it, boil it, mash it and we get mashed potatoes that are oh so good.Or the tomato that and the potato are members of the nightshade family.

    For my Mac & Cheese and I am a cheese head 🧀 I use White pepper, sea Salt, paprika for basic seasoning. If I don't have anything else ill use a little All Seasoning, but I like a little bit of ranch seasoning, with garlic and onion powder. It gives it a sort of Italian flavor. And that is so strange that he mentioned nutmeg because I planned on trying that because I head it makes Ramen noodles taste better. But be careful with nutmeg.

    I think Neil might have to be reminded that we made several attempts to explore Antarctica before anyone even came back alive.

    Can't build a better world on an empty stomach, (or live at all) so saving our food systems thus ecosytems so we can continue to dine together is a core priority - best strategy i know of so far is the San Diego Food Security Plan... best water efficient organic nutrient rich closed system model is the OASIS food hub model
