Should I move to my favourite city in Europe?

  • I love this city more and more every time I visit it. And now that I'm not massively tied to the UK I'm very tempted to more here. I just need to find the perfect place to stay and I think I might have done just that.

Move to where makes you happiest. It might not be forever, but if it’s right for now, then why not? Moving from the UK to the continent is harder since Brexit but not impossible. Enjoy life!

I made the move from London to Prague and haven't looked back. Being on mainland Europe is perfect : the summers are nicely hot; the winters are nicely cold ( it's a dry cold. Once you're bundled up and have good boots, you're fine); public transport is so good you would never need a car; public travel cards are cheap; and you're central in Europe so train travel to Budapest, Bratislava, Prague, Graz, Llubjana etc. is a doddle. Living abroad broadens the mind. And if you don't like it, you can always go home. That space is plenty big. As an expat you'll be out all the time at the weekends doing cool stuff anyway. Make the move ! :)

Moved from UK to Prague and I think the only complaint I have is the having to get on a plane a lot to visit friends and family, it can get quite tiresome so if you are fairly near the airport you should be good! I recommend the European life, good luck Lucy! 😀

If you like it, go for it. Worked in vienna for almost 11 years. And i personally wasn't a fan of the constant wind. I was not used to that as there's little to no wind where i grew up. So me personally, it took me 2 years to get used to it. But if you are already visiting vienna often and for a few days and have no problem with the wind, even in winter, you'll be fine.
A nice thing in vienna is that you can reach almost everything with the U-bahn, and the tickets aren't overly expensive.
People in vienna have the image of being grumpy and in some worldwide questionaires as being unfriendly. But to me that's just a stereotype.
They aren't more unfriendly or more grumpy than others in europe. It's just that there are different expectations on interactions in different areas of the world. Austrians and mostly everybody north of austria in europe won't usually start a conversation with a stranger for no other reason than to start a conversation.
And the local viennese dialect to some sounds a little more grumpy than other german dialects.
The biggest question to me is, weren't you the one who didn't like cheese much in the James May cook-bunker videos?
And if so, is it no problem on Pizza? and then, have you tried a Käsekrainer saussage in vienna?

Lived there for 10 years in the 1990s, an amazing experience and still my favourite city. Living next door the the Prater may be a little noisy at times, but only a few stops on the underground into the first district/city centre. And as you say, come winter or summer, always something going on.

Hi Lucy, another lovely video and as a long term uk Expat myself I have alot of experience of living abroad. Some things that have repeated themselves as hurdles have been wardrobe space, space for 'stuff' which was always a kitchen drawer and a cupboard in a spare room and so importantly, the number of sockets to plug your gear in. Try to picture what you use daily that isn't there and where will it go and will it work once you bring it over. Anyway, a great video and looking forward to your next one. Thanks Lucy.

I'm so jealous of that little space in Vienna. Personally, I'm currently renting a 24 ish square metre flat with my partner but it doesn't have a balcony and it's not in the nicest location. I'd love to have a little balcony, just to give us that little bit of extra space, especially outdoors.

I love Vienna, my dream city is Berlin, I even speak German, and try to visit a German speaking country at least one or two times a year and I live in Americaland. I've visited Berlin a number of times, and would happily choose Vienna as a home base if I couldn't make Berlin work. The only drawbacks in my eye are both are relatively smaller airports, so most flights will require a stop at a major airport for my transoceanic travels, and that would easily put Vienna ahead of Berlin at the moment.

My big sister just finished her residency and started as a fellow on Monday. I'm hoping to take her on her first international trip (now that she gets to take some time off) and I think Vienna is a great mix of history, culture, vibe, food, and "differentness" as a first trip, especially since she isn't big on France or Italy (not that she doesn't like France ro Italy, she just wants something a little more manageable as a first forrey than Paris or Rome)

Totally different question if renting vs buying - just be sure how long the tenancy commitment is if things don’t work out.
Also need to consider how long you can stay as a Brit if not going for residency, and if you are how that could impact you for tax etc.
You appear to have minimal ties to the U.K. (family, partner, existing property etc.) so making the move now before committing to those things is an opportunity to consider.
Remember, it’s not “forever”. In another 5-10 years time your wants and priorities will have evolved, and you could be on the other side of the planet - maybe in 25 years even on another planet or the moon!

There's always construction going on in vienna. That's just how it is in every other city too. And during summer one notices it more (and due to concrete needing positive temps to cure, more consctruction is done during the warmer months.)
