It’s not so much that Cunard is “older” as that it is consciously “retro”- they aspire to keep “the Golden Age of Travel” alive. The ship’s decor reflects that, but so too is the dress code necessary to preserve that ambience. I think the entertainment also reflects this-more lectures and classical music. Also they must be one of the only lines that have real libraries on their ships! Personally I love it-the same way I loved travelling on the Orient Express and the Pride of Africa trains.
In my 30s I was a cruise operations coordinator for several cruise lines, including Cunard, for two large travel companies here in North America. I did all of this from my desk in Boston, Massachusetts. We were the largest booking agency for Cunard on the North American Continent. I was given a transatlantic crossing on the QE2. I found later that I was booked into princess grill, so I went to Keyzers, a wonderful men’s clothing store near Harvard University in Harvard Square. I bought a tuxedo and I got red, white, and black, matching bow ties and cummerbunds for my transatlantic cruise. I loved the experience of this transatlantic crossing! It draws an entirely different crowd than you get on a 7 day, 7 port cruise. A rockstar, whose wife was too pregnant to fly, but they wished for their child to be born in England, a world-class, tap dancer, who is no longer with us, that got a bit bored on the second day out, so he decided to give tap dancing lessons in the Queen’s ballroom, for free, and a star trek captain, who was rather shy, and mostly kept to himself. A transatlantic crossing is an entirely different world! Other than river cruising, it’s the only cruise that I shall ever do again! 😸
The grills transatlantic cruise is wonderful. The restaurant is amazing-staff, decor, food, wine. I found that after the second day I completely lost track of days. Time would literally float by and the huge amount of things you could do meant you could be busy constantly if you want. I would do it again in a second. A large balcony with lounge chairs, a dressing room with walk in closets, huge bath, couch, king size bed, free liquor. To me it was like staying in a 5 star resort. I think the “older crowd” vibe is in people’s heads. If you are young and looking for loud crazy parties, not for you. If you are young and appreciate class and being treated very well, you will really appreciate Cunard.
I’m a 32 year old cruiser, and had my first experience with Cunard last year onboard Queen Elizabeth for 2 weeks as we transmitted the Panama Canal. I found the ship to be quiet ALL the time - even the middle of the afternoon on a sea day! Good to see you covering a ship like this - really enjoyed this video!
Great video! We are a couple in our early 30’s but are definitely old souls. Love reading, antique shopping, afternoon tea and just chilling out in a more elegant environment. I was a bit worried about booking a Cunard cruise as I still thought we might stand out and be seen as a little strange but I think you’ve convinced me. Queen Mary to New York I think. The Queen Anne looks incredible too, modern but still super classy! Would love to see a video of either the queen Mary or Anne 👍
Since most regular cruisers have a Transatlantic on the only existing/ operating ocean liner on their bucket list, you'll probably find that you're not standing out at all on that route. I did it in October 2022 and loved it. And do go and watch the show in the planetarium. Reserve seats ( they are free, but limited) as soon as you can.
We are a couple in our mid 30's (like you we prefer quieter holidays where we can relax and explore). We've cruised with Cunard a couple of times now and didn't feel at all out of place. There's plenty to do if you want to stay busy but it's just such a lovely place to relax.
Oh wow Lucy, only a year ago I started watching your videos to help me achieve my dream and guess what- i am now working on Queen Victoria! It’s a pity I didn’t see you as I am currently onboard 🤗😍Glad you enjoyed it and hope to see you sometime again! 👍🏻
Lucy, thanks for a lovely video! Whether vlog or narrated-in-post, it's fine with me (although if you're out in port, vlogs are of course better). I'm glad you enjoyed Cunard, and btw while I know you enjoyed Virgin the best (both working on and cruising on), I do get a sense of surprised-happiness in your voice regarding this experience. And who knows, in a few years you may find yourself taking another one-week Cunard cruise (to relax, decompress, etc.)? Take care, Fair Winds, and stay warm up there sweetie! 😀
Queen Mary 2 Transatlantic in December is spectacular, as the ship is all done up for Christmas. And yes Cunard is about ambiance, the enrichment program, just relaxing with a more traditional tone. I've done 4 Transatlantics and loved them all.
Thank you, Lucy! I board the Queen Victoria on MONDAY (01-22)! I specifically decided on Cunard for the very reasons you mentioned; it is quiet... not so 'in my face'. And the prospect of sailing the Panama Canal on my 65th birthday sealed the deal. Your entire litany of videos is as enjoyable as they are informative. Continued success to you.
really lovely review. Doing my first Cunard sailing (7-nights, round-trip out of NYC to Boston/Halifax) and am... both excited and nervous. I'm SO not a dress-up kinda guy but I love the idea of stepping back in time and enjoying something a bit more sedate than what I've experienced on Carnival, Norwegian, etc. I very much enjoyed everything about this review... you get to the point, you're honest, and you keep things moving at a great pace.
Thanks for the video. I am doing two Queen Mary 2 crossings, my first in May. I am so anxious to see the ship. I am cruising to Europe doing to transatlantic then Norway and returning on Cunard. The cruise is about the same as flying one way first class plus I get 7 days on a cruise. Can't wait to see more on the ship.
Great video. I was on the same cruise but I left the ship in Hamburg. It was the first time on the Victoria, but I‘ve been several times on the Queen Mary. I love the style and ambience on the Cunard ships and wish that this will be continued for many many years.
Was on the QM2 and loved it. I also noticed how quiet everything was and that was great. Virgin or Carnival with all the loud music and partying sounds like hell to me.
Virgin or Carnival? I am pleased to say I will never find out. Cunard for me, every time. Around 20 crossings and cruises on 4 Cunard vessels (and another booked...)
Cunard sounds a great for me. I like quiet places and relaxing days. I love slower paced things. I'm in my 40s and all the fancy elegant slower paced vacations are what I look for. Thank you for this review. Cunard is now on my lost to try. Your video was great quality was good especially when you went to your phone.
As a regular Cunard cruiser I agree with everything you said. However you didn't mention the quality/standard of the guest speakers and the differences between Britannia, Princess and Queen's Grill classes. People new to Cunard need to know about the class divides.
We took a transatlantic in January 2028 on Victoria. Since we were repatriating to the US, our travel wardrobe was limited and we struggled a bit with the dress code. For example, my sport coat with nice jeans and casual footwear was not appropriate for some nights, and we were not served in the pub or permitted on certain parts of the ship. However, the ship and stateroom were wonderful, and the food in the Lido Cafe was excellent. We also found a grill in the pool area, which was great.
So good to see you! Love your videos! And you saw Jordan!!! Miss both your faces! I’m so excited for Cunard and the new ship 🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 here’s hoping I’ll get to more than just see it. I had no idea what to truly expect from Cunard. Your video made me even more excited! Such a beautiful ship. I can’t wait!
Particularly interesting video, Lucy so thanks for that! My wife and I (58& 60) only started cruising in 2014 and have only done Cunard cruises, except that we tried Celebrity (Silhouette) 2 years ago. I found your video very insightful and similar to what we have experienced. For us, ( 'older souls' 😂) Cunard is perfect - quieter, more laid back, a bit dressier - a bit 'classier' dare I say? We also like it for the good gluten-free food offer; it's far, far better than Celebrity offered us. We are also looking forward to seeing how Queen Anne subtly moves things more into the current vibe, without disrupting what makes Cunard good (for us). It would also be fascinating to see you experience a QM2 transatlantic trip!
Right On. Classy, elegant and relaxed = CUNARD! Probably more intellectually stimulating vs. the constant loud Dance Party scene of others. More appreciative of finer things, abeit appearing quite Slower in appearance to a younger generation with short attention spans, it's actually a very full and satisfying experience. Would I have enjoyed it during my youth? Maybe not so much on some levels, but the Awe Factor would have made it clear it was special. Plus, intergenerational mingling is fantastic and healthy for all.
The Dress Code. I would have to challenge your opinion there - people tend to cruise Cunard in part because of the dress code (regardless of their age) and regulars tend to make sure they stick to it after 5. It is usually people who've never been with the line before who flaunt the rules and let the side down, which are even more lax now than before Covid. What people are a bit tired of are the "gala night" (formally formal night) themes, and so depending on the cruise and demographic the percentage who embrace the theme varies. Given it was a 4-night cruise (of two 2-night segments) prior to the world cruise starting, there was a huge difference in the passengers and is probably not an accurate representation as there were those who'll have embarked Southampton and disembarked Hamburg; those who embarked Hamburg, and disembarked Southampton; and those who did the full 4-nights before continuing onto the world cruise. Naturally those who were only doing either 2-night segment would want to try to pack light and may not have necessarily brought a "proper" formal wear with them.
Great overview video Lucy! Please please please consider organizing a meet and greet cruise for your subscribers. It would be amazing to cruise with you!!
I travel average 2/3 Cunard cruises per year and I have to say there is all age groups, the atmosphere and every age group catered for , from very young and yes very old , but all get on , definitely not a old persons cruise line 🚢
Lucy this is a great video. Don’t apologize for the phone it does a much better job than the camera. The camera’s white balance seams to be to hot and it washes you out.
Another wonderful vlog! I do not said anything. I would never have known the difference of one camera to the other. I'm hook line and sinker a Lucy fan! 🥰 Really hope someday I get to meet you.
Cunard sounds perfect. My idea of hell is a week of twerking, hooting and hollering, drunk, loud, party types. My fave cruise so far was Regent Seven Seas around the Med. So peaceful and relaxing. Plush everything and the food was amazing. I loved it. Did RC around Singapore and Thailand, that was ok too. I think I’ll give Cunard a go. 👍
As a follow on Lucy. I thought your video quality was better from your iphone, and the audio was very good too. Over-all, Content and Technical Quality was excellent. Thank you. Spoolbox
I had an auditon with Cunard a few days ago for cruise staff. I noticed that they were very classist in who they chose. All the northerners, working class and the more extroverted ones were asked to apply to P&O (interviews in Manchester) but the sweet, well spoken and quieter ones were chosen for Cunard
I personally love Cunard I’ve sailed on all the 3 ships each time having a great experience. But it comes down to what you like we just love to chill for a few weeks, and yes it’s more relaxed than people think.
Think you are absolutely brilliant. I have not done cruise ships however worked in USA. Zante and other places you should be offered a senior position for cruise liners with your knowledge. Well presented honest intelligent with information that's essential in travel work all the very best new fan Grumpy old Scottish chef
We had a good time on Queen Victoria and have done QM2 a few times. Loved these trips and so different to Royal Caribbean- we have been on Symphony and Wonder. Next week we are on Norwegian Bliss.
Hello Lucy, If I cruised I would be a Cunad fan (I'm old). I Love all your Vlogs. Have you moved from you latest position (not in a shop). I thought you were looking after passengers on board (or something like that). Great to see Queen Victoria, I wonder if there is much difference between QV (A Cruise ship) and Queen Mary 2 (The last Ocean Going Ship). I't's a bit late now, but I wish you a Happy New Year. Spoolbox,
I did Cunard (Queen Victoria) in 2019, I sailed August 23 - September 06 which overlapped school time, this meant I was one of about 20 people under the age of 25. And I loved the ship and vacation sm! Btw, I was 15 at the time :D
LOL! Be thankful it was cold in Hamburg! Otherwise you may have seen "things" that you would never be able to un-see! LOL! Great presentation! Thanks! 😎😎😎
I’ve had the steak at the Verandah restaurant on the Queen Elizabeth and it was amazing!!! Also tried the Japanese fusion restaurant at the Lido and that was amazing as well…
Please review the Queen Mary 2 transatlantic voyage 😊 I really want to do it for my first trip to the UK. Should I take it from NY to Southampton or take it back home 🤔I'd love to see your take on it.
We did the trip from Southhampton to NY, and viewed from the Commodore lounge, sailing into NY at dawn, with the sun rising behind the statue of liberty was a sight I will not forget! Coming into Southampton is a more everyday event.......
@@peterqpuser4127 I've always wanted to sail under the Verrazzano Bridge, the lights of NYC on the horizon and see the Statue of Liberty in the harbor. I do think it would be more exciting coming in than going out. Thank you for your comment!
I loved leaving from NYC-the sailaway views were at sunset and spectacular, and going under the Verrazano is kind of incredible. My sister has done it both ways, and thought sailing into NYC at 5am was not as good. I’m doing Southampton to NYC in November, for the Literature Festival at Sea!
Miss Lucy - Very nice, informative vlog, I really enjoyed the content regarding Cunard. Also nice that you met a friend on board with whom you used to work with - how cool was that? I immediately noticed when you changed from your camera to your phone for the video - interestingly, the color of your wall decoration was far richer with the phone's camera, your main camera's colors seem a bit more washed out comparatively. You also mentioned sound quality, and I agree that there's something a little "off" about it - both with your main camera and your phone's camera. It may be due to the acoustics of the room you're filming in that's contributing to the sound quality? Here's a thought: perhaps if you could figure out a way to hang a blanket behind the camera, that might help improve the acoustics by reducing reflected sounds coming back from the wall? Experiment and see? Keep up the good work, always enjoy your vlogs, and have learned a lot thru them! Cheers!
I did the Hamburg 5 nights on the Cunard Queen Mary 2. I'm in my 50s and loved it! There was lots of entertainment but I would agree it might be the most exciting for youngsters. For instance there are quizzes, the planetarium, talks, art gallery and library and gym/spa. Evening entertainment was Motown hits etc. Kids and teenagers would probably be bored. There was nightclubs/dancing though for those who like to boogie the night away. My family wanted to have dinner every night in the Britannia but I personally found the menu too formal (a bit posh for my liking!) so I prefer the flexibility of the self service restaurant.
If you want to be bored, check out Holland America. No entertainment. Lots of knitting, trivia and orgami. Otherwise, there's only the buffet and the casino to keep you interested.
Lucy….you are doing a great job. Love watching your energy! If I had one criticism it would be the “Head room” you have. You need to tilt your camera down. People would much rather see you. Follow the rule of 1/3s. Your eyes should be 1/3 from the top of frame, 2/3s of YOU. If you look one way to get a profile shot, 2/3 in front of you, 1/3 behind (Look room). Okay…Im a video director by profession but I do love watching your videos.
I've travelled on Queen Victoria and QM 2 and on both cruises people made an effort to dress up, especially during the evenings with the ballroom evenings everyone outdone themselves. I love this. It's one of the reasons I love Cunard. But I can imagine and understand that others would very much prefer to cruise without these rules.
Billie (sp?) is very lucky to have you as a friend. I find it interesting that as a cruise ship officer who makes some income from electronic/digital media, that you prefer a printed schedule rather than getting the information on an app. I wonder if other folks in your generation would also prefer a printed schedule and if other cruise lines would ever rethink how they do it.
She never said she was an Officer... She stated that her Title on the RCCL ship is at the level of an Officer, so she gets certain officer privileges 🤷🏼😁
@@djodell2369 I admit I got lazy and just typed "officer" when I should have typed "employee with some privileges equivalent to that of a two and half (?) stripe officer." Of course truth be told I am not even sure if two and half stripes (I think that is what she said, right?) is equivalent to a colonel or commander or admiral or maybe chancellor?
I’m curious about this, too. I always hear that Cunard is a “very British” experience. Does that mean more British crew, or is it the same international mix as any other line?
Hi Lucy, I've sailed the QE2 original, Mary 2, victoria and Elizabeth, yes very different demographic to Royal, princess, celebrity etc, I would now fit in well now because I've just turned 60, however besides, the general class that the the majority of passengers are, you also have the queen grill and I think king, could be wrong on that, which provides an elevated experience in the cabin and food department and old style cruising, a little more formal but nice, privides an alternative to the other cruise ship offerings, also the passengers on board if you chat to them have a interesting story/history to talk about, rather than some chav, looking for the nearest toilet to sniff a line up their hooter 😜 so horses for courses really, you appreciate it, or hate it😂
We always find that Cunard was always slightly better for than it's sister line, P&O. P&Os food is now terrible, to the point where even the low priced couldn't tempt. So, it makes sense Cunard's is just "okay". I'd love to go back onto Cunard, especially the new Queen Anne, but until the reviews improve it'll have to wait! We are going on Fred Olsen now these days, which are dearer, but that I actually look forward to and relish meal times.
We are planning our honeymoon as a crossing on the QM2, the Virgin cruises look like they would make my ADHD/ASD brain melt and I would hate it. (but I totally understand others might love it)
I actually prefer your phone video. The color balance is better. Your makeup looks much better. There is really no need for 4K on the typical computer monitor.

Cunard for me, every time.
Around 20 crossings and cruises on 4 Cunard vessels (and another booked...)
There is the Queen's Grill, Princess Grill, Britannia Club Dining Room. There are three formal nights on transatlantic crossings.
Those grill rooms are only available if you have booked the matching cabin, sorry I mean stateroom 😮
Good job, enjoyed your opinion and your honesty.❤

Enjoyed this video. very interesting and entertaining.
Thank you Lucy. I'd consider Cunard after watching your video, for a quiet cruise.

Naturally those who were only doing either 2-night segment would want to try to pack light and may not have necessarily brought a "proper" formal wear with them.
Great video Lucy loved it.
But remember..., the ""Older Cliental" today, we are people that grew up with artists such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Tina Turner.....
And might I add Queen, The Who, etc. etc. Rock on!
I was working on the QV at the sometime you were onboard the ship😎
We’re going on the Queen Victoria on 20th Mat - Istanbul to Rome. I’ve been other cruises - hated the Carnival 1. I think I’m going to love Cunard!
On formal night on QM2 at the MDR they told the guy in front of me if you want to eat here you need to go upstairs to the store and buy a tie.
My Cruise in 2019, every night on the QM2, we had to wear a tie and jacket. I was even told to put my jacket back on if I wanted to stay in the bar.
Always enjoy your posts!

Yahoo... I see myself there. Thank you Lucy. I was so happy to see you. I am the woman of mid year.. I guess you remember me. 😊
Thanks, that was a really fun video!
Thank you Lucy for another great video. From Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
As a follow on Lucy. I thought your video quality was better from your iphone, and the audio was very good too. Over-all, Content and Technical Quality was excellent. Thank you. Spoolbox
lovely, thats my kind of cruise. so great thank you
I had an auditon with Cunard a few days ago for cruise staff.
Always enjoy your videos
Thanks! 😎😎😎
thnx, i always wondered what cunard was like
I’ve had the steak at the Verandah restaurant on the Queen Elizabeth and it was amazing!!!
@@suzyrogers4700 I may just have to take it there and back to see for myself 🥰 Enjoy your transatlantic this fall! That would be a great cruise!
@@Tulsa_Time you totally should do it!!
I wonder why afternoon wasn’t served in the Queens Room as it should have been.
As a port agent I would say food wise yes VV, but for me going on a cruise Cunard. Man I miss the malted strawberries ice 😊
We love you, Lucy! ❤
Never been on Cunard but the Sea Day Afternoon Tea on Princess is very good. I managed to do a ship tour and lunch on the QE2 😋
If you want to be bored, check out Holland America. No entertainment. Lots of knitting, trivia and orgami. Otherwise, there's only the buffet and the casino to keep you interested.
How were the retail shops??
Extra hangers can be obtained from your cabin steward, should you need them.
Would have been nice to see more of the ship.
I was on this same cruise and agree with everything you said. Thisxwas a try out having done 32 cruises with other lines. Wasnt for us - too staid!
Thanks Lucy, First
I’m 2 hahaha
I don't think she is like Tony B... Squad Leader 🤦🏻
@@djodell2369 I admit I got lazy and just typed "officer" when I should have typed "employee with some privileges equivalent to that of a two and half (?) stripe officer."
Of course truth be told I am not even sure if two and half stripes (I think that is what she said, right?) is equivalent to a colonel or commander or admiral or maybe chancellor?
@@brucegordon4992... OK 🤷🏼
Looks nice, but here in Chicago the temps won't get up to freezing until next week so if I were to get on a cruise it would be someplace very warm.
When will we get to see the video tour of the bridge and engine room?
Its fun to just put u on the speakers as i do kitchen work...=D
So the unanswered question, is would you like to work onboard a Cunard ship? What vibe did you get from the crew?
I’m curious about this, too. I always hear that Cunard is a “very British” experience. Does that mean more British crew, or is it the same international mix as any other line?
Same international mix as p&o unsurprisingly
@@Buddy869-z9x most of the serving and cleaning staff were Pilipino - a smattering of Africans.
Hi Lucy, I've sailed the QE2 original, Mary 2, victoria and Elizabeth, yes very different demographic to Royal, princess, celebrity etc, I would now fit in well now because I've just turned 60, however besides, the general class that the the majority of passengers are, you also have the queen grill and I think king, could be wrong on that, which provides an elevated experience in the cabin and food department and old style cruising, a little more formal but nice, privides an alternative to the other cruise ship offerings, also the passengers on board if you chat to them have a interesting story/history to talk about, rather than some chav, looking for the nearest toilet to sniff a line up their hooter 😜 so horses for courses really, you appreciate it, or hate it😂
Oh yes, the MQ2. Being an Ocean Liner she is in a class of her own.
I love your videos ❤
I was thinking of booking a Cunard cruise. Were there any decent vegan choices in the restaurant?
Have you tried the winter garden?
We always find that Cunard was always slightly better for than it's sister line, P&O. P&Os food is now terrible, to the point where even the low priced couldn't tempt. So, it makes sense Cunard's is just "okay". I'd love to go back onto Cunard, especially the new Queen Anne, but until the reviews improve it'll have to wait! We are going on Fred Olsen now these days, which are dearer, but that I actually look forward to and relish meal times.
Can I ask where did you get that magnetic board from?
Your phone has a better camera its a lot sharper than your other camera ?
That ship looks more geared up for the posh rich older people.
I think the Queen Anne might be my best bet
Thank you Lucy! Being an older woman that looked a bit too stuffy for me.😂 If I ever get myself on a cruise ship I’m leaning towards Virgin Voyages.
Do they have spa
a full service spa on the same deck as the Lido buffet
Is it similar to p&o?
We are planning our honeymoon as a crossing on the QM2, the Virgin cruises look like they would make my ADHD/ASD brain melt and I would hate it. (but I totally understand others might love it)
did you get the praying mantis eyelashes?
Is that Coach Snead Jordan?
Omg it is Jordan 😂 Does he do cross fit on cunard? That would be interesting
Oh God if it is please make him stay put on Cunard and not come back to Virgin.
@@beckyliddle9562 i miss him on Virgin Voyages...but doing the VHS class you can still get to see him.
Hmm. I thought tea was served in the Queens Room
Afternoon tea is
You: “and the food is”
Video cuts to advertisement: “Swiffer Mop”
Me: 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I actually prefer your phone video. The color balance is better. Your makeup looks much better. There is really no need for 4K on the typical computer monitor.
What do you mean by vlog? Do you mean just show footage and now read it?
