Millennials aren’t uncool because they’re millennials, they’re uncool because they’re 30 and that’s how trends work. Gen Z isn’t annoying bc they’re Gen Z, they’re annoying bc they’re teenagers with internet connections. This is just horoscopes for boring people.

As a fellow Zennial, my thoughts exactly. What I find hilarious about this whole thing? Generations were literally invented by companies and advertisers to sell products better back in the 50s or so. That's why you don't hear about any generations older than the 1920s. Gen Z is playing a reverse uno card on themselves by caring so much about something they supposedly despise.

@@irwinmier8878 As a mixed person who has dark enough skin to where I have experienced enough racial remarks towards my skin color, I wholeheartedly agree. (I believe my parental figure told me I'm more African American, but I'm still not sure, as I haven't taken a DNA test. I believe I did in the past as a toddler, but I don't remember anything. Am I able to say I'm black even though I'm mixed? I'm not sure.)
And I'm a part of Gen Z. Sixteen years old.
Even all of the way back, people of my color have been doing the work, as you've said. Even nowadays, it's people of *all* ages. It always has been.
I hate to say it, but I believe every generation has a superiority complex. That's how it has worked forever, I believe. And I don't even believe in generations.
It's not just Gen Z. Seriously, I was raised by my grandma, and she just loves to hate on my generation and talks like she's a God compared to younger people. I've ran into many adults just like that, too.
But do I believe just because you're older than me you're the same way as her? No. I won't define you as a person by your age range.
Some adults act like children, and some children act like adults (usually due to trauma, sadly.)
In my opinion, at least. Either way, I'm tired of people of all ages thinking they're better than the other age range. Your generation doesn't determine rather you're better than the other. So many people shit on my generation that my self-esteem just worsens everyday, but so many people of my generation shit on other generations, that I can't imagine what they're going through as well.
Nobody should be a jerk towards the other person when they don't even know them. I *loathe* it when people judge you as a person and themselves based on their generation/age.

French Revolution was nowhere near of the same political tone like the ones gen z and millennials are talking about. Now it's socialist rebellion against establishment.
French Revolution was a capitalist rebellion against monarchial establishment. I don't have to explain that capitalism is just monarchy that changed zip codes. It's still hierarchical structure of economy and society, it's just there's less bloodline family inheritance of power and wealth.
But yes even socialist rebellions were done a lot of times and continue to happen all over the world as we speak. But I guess the world only notices if people in US start to talk about it.

About progressivism increasing with generations: I’d be so curious to see what the dominant social narratives regarding boomers and gen x would be like if it weren’t for HIV/AIDS. The epidemic hit when these groups were in their 20s-40s, and primarily affected LGBT and POC communities, who were prominent activists during this time, with some even being old enough to have participated in the civil rights movement and rising queer rights movement. These activists laid the groundwork for so much of the progress we’ve made, but because they spent the last 20 yrs of the 20th century dying en masse, they never got to take credit for the outcomes, leading younger generations to believe they’re exerting more sociopolitical power than they really are (and painting a much more cishet, white, conservative portrait of boomers and gen x).

nobodys really saying that though ??? did you even watch the video lol. the point is that gen z/ millennial labels are unhelpful and don't mean anything - they were coined just divide us as a marketing tactic. the whole "they hate our hair and pants !!" thing was so clearly a millennial ploy for attention & relevancy. the annoying gen z trope is because gen z is TEENAGERS - and teenagers are pretty notorious for having superiority complexes & being snarky. the annoying millennial trope is because they're getting older but are letting kids get under their skin for whatever reason. literally nobody cares about your part or jeans, and someone commenting that you're "uncool" is not the same as racial/ gender-based/ sexuality-based prejudice. so that whole "they say theyre so tolerant but then they dont do things that are nice and good 100% of the time always ?!!?" point you can just throw right out the window lol
edit: making generalizations based on something like this is just pointless. that goes for millennials & gen z - i don't care who is who, it literally is not a thing and im tired of people trying to pretend it is. if you're telling people what to wear: shut up. if you're telling people how they feel/ think: shut up. ftr i was born in 96

On one hand, I feel like Generations are valid in the sense that there are different historical milestones that shape someone's perception of the world. My perspective of September 11th is vastly different from someone who can actually remember a time before The War on Terror (albeit, this distinction will get less useful as more people born after the attacks come into existence), but they're not all that useful outside of that broader (and probably America-centric) perspective. Arguing about Harry Potter and skinny jeans feels ridiculous to me.

I've thought for a while that generational tension is almost engineered to prevent solidarity across age demographics. Young people have enthusiasm and energy that begins to fade with the disappointments and jaded spirit of age. They're less constrained by The Rules because they haven't had enough time to learn what can't be done so they're willing to be more creative and risk taking. Respecting their perspectives and ideas and valuing their energy and righteous anger (Eminem was already cancelled but don't mock young people who are just finding out all the shit things he's done. They should be mad) is critical to be able to productively work together.
On the flip side, older people have valuable experiences and perspectives that can help support young people to harness and direct that energy is productive ways. There have been activists laying themselves on the line in *every* generation (including the Boomers, friends) and they have accumulated a vast wealth of experience that can save us time trying avenues doomed to failure.
Short story, the power brokers aren't generationally defined and neither are those resisting. They're working together and so should we. Plus, millenials being concerned about being uncool is a cringy waste of your limited old person energy. 😌
Source: many years ago a Gen X activist explained this to me in the course of me learning to be useful and not fucking up our work. Now I'm nurturing teenagers I get it even more than I did before because I'm just so very tired and they're still so enthusiastic. 😅

I will add that defining millenials because of 9-11 is very centered in the USA. I am not saying it didn't make the news here, but we weren't as definined by it. Actually, other countries had different events that "defined a generation". These conversations, as so many others, show us once again that Americans have that mindset set on their own country and culture. Just the fact that they call themselves Americans is so self centered!
As far as your point, I do agree. My age doesn't connect me to other people, my experiences and beliefs do.

It's fine. But you make excellent points as to why relating everything to being born in a certain generation over more meaningful distinctions like race, class, etc. is at best pointless and at worst really harmful. I always get annoyed when people my age want to blame everything on Boomers... like, yeah, some of them are absolutely awful but it's so much more complicated than "everyone born between 1945 and 1960 is a piece of shit." IDK exactly what I'm trying to say, just that I really appreciated this video and keep making great content!

I was born in 1997 and tend to relate more with "younger millennials" than "older Gen Z" kids. My theory for why this is has, in part, to do with the fact that if you were born in 1997 you were part of the last group of people who were physical capable of remembering 9/11. I literally started forming memories in 2001 and can clearly remember watching the towers fall on TV and then the eventual news reports talking about troops being sent to the Middle East. It was a very distinct moment in my life, and obviously in the lives of other kids within a certain range of my age group.
I think the concept of a generation is useful when analyzing how certain major events effect the way people view the world. I genuinely think people who can remember seeing one of the biggest tragedies of the 21st Century happen in front of their eyes have very distinct opinions on politics, culture, economics, etc., as opposed to those who weren't capable of internalizing such a heavy topic at the time. I think of the Greatest Generation as a distinct generation because everyone in that time frame experienced the horrors of both World Wars. The biggest thing tying Gen Z together isn't any arbitrary age range, but having shared experiences as a results of the 2008 Recession that are unique to their age group. I think that the underlying theme of generations, as an abstract concept, is about shared trauma bonding.

You hit the nail on the head with them seemingly claiming things as their achievements when they should be looked at as achievements for people involved not a generation alive when it happened.

I think the easiest way to determine “generational” divides (in the US specifically) is which traumatic events effected you and your peers the most.
If you can remember the way things were before 9/11 and understand that a massive cultural shift occurred, you’re a millennial. And I’m not talking about remembering seeing it on TV or your parents/teachers talking about it either, I mean if you were cognizant enough to realize that things had truly changed. If you’re able to remember a time growing up where the US had not yet invaded Afghanistan, that makes you a millennial.
If you had multiple active shooter lock down drills a year while at school, you’re Gen Z. I know that the 90s had Columbine and other gun related tragedies, but mass shootings defined Gen Z’s childhood and adolescence. The clearest memory I have of middle school is my English teacher coming out of his office to let the class know that a shooter targeted an elementary school less than an hour away from our town. From the time that I was in Kindergarten to Senior Year (2005-2018), 600+ people died in mass shootings according to Reuters’ time line.
It’s also entirely possible that my entire high school peer group was just hyper sensitive to gun violence (we were based in an unsafe area and lost 3 students to shootings), but considering how many school aged kids protested/demonstrated during the aftermath of the Parkland shooting, I think it’s safe to say that the constant shootings have had an impact.
I’d imagine that the next generation will live in the shadow of the pandemic. The last two gens have dealt with the ramifications of 9/11 and the war on terror, whether it was signing up to join the military as soon as they could in a flurry of patriotic emotions or hearing about the never ending wars is in the Middle East. I cannot even begin to fathom how Covid will affect future gens.

    • @petalchild
      @petalchild 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Ok but having these two strict categories leaves a huge group of people out. I remember 9/11 and the aftermath, but was arguably too young to have a good understanding of how the world was before. However, the whole school shooting as a common occurrence thing began when I was already out of high school, or maybe in my last few years of hs. So yet again, Zillennials are left out of the loop with no group to belong to.

I love that you kept changing your hair from a middle to a side part lol. Also one more thing to be said about generations is that those supposed shared experiences (such as toys, tv shows, music) don't translate to the entire world, either because they were never popular in other countires, or because it took some time until they were. For example, I relate to a lot of those "only 90s kids will remember", even though I am from 2001, because things from the US took quite some time to popularize in Brasil. So not only are generations kinda useless, potentially harmful, and don't translate well between class, it is an intrinsically american idea, based almost entirely in american experiences and point of view, making a lot of americans seem not only kinda dumb, but very self-centered for believing so intensely on this idea.

Julia, I basically agreed with every point you have made. I have been saying that generations are made up for the longest time, and you saying they are and backing your statement up with quotes and excerpts from experts just validates how I feel about this whole thing. Its funny when people will say Zillennials are a made up term when Millennials and Gen Z are also made up terms, even funnier you provided a text from someone saying Millennials is made up. It's almost like, generations are made up by old white people with some sinister motive?
Also something you didn't mention was how American the concept of these generation labels are. Specifically Gen X/Millennial/Gen Z etc. Many parts of the world don't even use these labels, or have their own generational cohorts like Japan and other Asian nations.
I also find it to be a huge slap in the face when white teenagers credit themselves for the BLM movements in recent years when so many POC of all ages have been heavily engaged in the movement. It comes off very white savior-y to me. Like they just came in and decided that because they support the movement, they should be recognized as a whole, basically not amplifying or crediting the POC folks who put in the time and effort towards social change. That's just how I see it.

As someone who desn't use any social media (except Yutube if TH-cam counts as a social media) I had no idea that this generation war was a thing... Seems pointless.

the line you drew between the concept of generations and advertisement is so real like. it's the same reason why products are much more gendered nowadays than a decade ago. excessive market severing in late stage capitalism.
i also feel like ppl treat generations with more "respect" than astrology for the same reason they blindly believe in gender roles or the construct of race: our biological age is real; sex is real; the varying physical characteristics humans can exhibit according to their parentage and the place they live in are real. what's not real is all the baggage we ascribe to these things. but it's so unthinkable for most ppl to separate the physical reality from the assigned stereotypes that we end up in this whole situation we have now.
and another thing... i always thought it was stupid when adults told me that when i grew up, i would "understand". but something really shifts at 25, when your brain (allegedly) finishes forming. it's fucked up. it's not like you lose all your sense of fight and rebellion, bc there are things that are still wrong and enraging even when you're not a hyperactive teenager over-eager to pick a fight just to feel something. but it's just different. you realize your anger about certain things was pointless sometimes. but what sucks the most is that you also start to forget how it was, how it felt to be a kid. idk if other near-30-year-olds are as aware of it as i am, but i notice ppl my age dunking on kids for being cringy or stupid and i want to be like "don't you remember how it was when we were the kids?" but i don't really remember either. it's easy to think we were smarter, more logical kids, who made less mistakes and were less embarassing. bc we know better now and project our experient self into our past. and that's how every new "generation" ends up mocked by its predecessors...
anyway. sorry for the long rant lmfao great video as always!

Should have known you were a speech kid! You're so well spoken and a pleasure to listen to in all your videos☺️
Also yeah for a long time "Millenial" was just "young kids today" I I remember being 13 and called a millennial, a lot of gen Z kids had been called millennials for the longest time. I remember hearing gen Z a few times but only the last few years had I actually heard people use Gen Z so militantly like now for a specific generation. Like Gen Alpha is talked about but because they're all in fifth grade no one cares about them yet

man i forgot how much i love ur channel !!!!
edit: i think u summed up what i thought about this "gen z will change the world" thing in a way i could never, and it's lowkey scary that people think they're immune to being bigoted or conservative because of their generation
at least in my semi-informed opinion, the second you see yourself as immune to being [blank], you start not questioning that you could think [blank] things or act in [blank] ways
especially for racism! if we want to be allies as white people, we have to somewhat stay on our toes and self-reflect on what we think automatically, how we treat people of color and our place in furthering white supremacy, and it becomes harder to do so when you think of racism with so much essentialism
to quote lindsay ellis: we've all got the stink
anyways this was a long tangent!! just thought of sharing

    omg on the rewatch:
a, i love the poet hair parts throughout the video 😂
b, what makes that cringe "man behind the curtain syndrome" even more outlandish is the amount of money influencers like lele pons, the paul brothers, jaystation, kylie jenner, etc make off of "gen z" kids. like no generation is immune to advertising it's just that some platforms become more relevant than others. magazine advertisements, for example, aren't nearly as influential as they used to be.
