The sound mixer on this deserves an award. Live concerts are made or broken with a sound tech team. Everyone on stage and behind made this the experience we all enjoy.

The Death of Music is just feelings made music. Dev was very, very low in that season because he started to understand the music industry from the inside, and it sucks, he was 20 years old genious but they tried to cut his wings to do just the same music that other bands were doing at the moment. I think that this song is just a call to the music inside of him, praying to it that never let him, that never die on him. Absolutely brilliant. I always cry with this song, it awakes me a lot of feelings. Congratulations couple, you're so nice. I love you guys. Annoyances for my english.

Way back in 2002 I was studying film and wanting to be a director. I had a short film I was doing and I thought that Devin's 'The Death of Music' would be perfect for it. I wrote (via snail mail) to Devin and Tracey and asked for permission to use the track
They were so nice and encouraging and granted me permission to use the song, provided I wasn't making money off it. It ended up being the best thing about the whole film.

    • @crusader1033

I had a similar experience when i was at collage, i wrote a piece of music for an assignment and after working on it for many hours (constantly rerecording the same part over and over) i realised that the most complex part, probably one of the bet things i have ever written/played/recorded, was actually very much inspired by the calm arpeggiated section from 'by your command' (like same chords, rhythm and tempo, just with a fluctuating time signature). So I shot a message to DTP explaining the situation and they got back to me very quickly saying so long as i wasn't making money from it it could be a note for note perfect rip off, but seen as it was just heavily inspired original work, they didn't need to check it and wished me all the best with the studies. My other half also had lengthy facebook conversations with most of the band following us going to one of there shows, just because she was asking them individually if it was ok to post video footage and pictures. There all very nice people threw and threw.

This trio of songs always sends chills up my spine. The pure emotion that pours out of this music, is so potent. A lot of us fans of Devy, are so because of his passion for what he creates. I know you were feeling the music and not so worried on the visual, but towards the end of The Death of Music, Devy gets chills and you can see the goosebumps on his arms appear. That is why I love him and his work. He feels all of it as strongly as we do. Pure unadulterated genius. Thank you for checking this trio out. Ocean Machine, the album that these songs come off of, is one of the greatest albums of all the time. I can not recommend strongly enough that you get this album.

you guys are awesome!! I think this is the first full reaction to the Ocean Machine "trilogy"... It's funny that Kel mentioned the lotus in the beginning because Devin uses the lotus to symbolize his newest album, Empath:
"the whole idea of the lotus and all that was an important part of the process for me . . . this idea of opening yourself up emotionally to the experience of life and pain and love and joy and sadness and anger and all these things requires a type of vulnerability, I think, that requires the ability and the desire to be open."

Everyone at the Albert hall cried to Death of music. It was insane to be there.

  • @patrickholt2270
    @patrickholt2270 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The Royal Albert Hall is a Victorian monument to Queen Victoria's beloved husband Prince Albert, who died young. It's an opera auditorium, and it has great accoustics. For my money, shoegaze prog metal is the best. Devin is such a master of the technology of shoegaze, he actually helped develop the programmable guitar pedalboard he uses to create this incredibly rich, layered, wall of sound.
I think that the cult of victory and cool in the world really hurts us. Loss is the real, universal human experience. Sooner or later we lose everyone and everything, and that's what people need helping to address and care about others going through, not winning and looking good. And that is one of the reasons why the traditional religions are important, and can never be erased, no matter how much some people want to erase them, because they take seriously the things which deserve to be taken more seriously than winning and looking good.

We want to feel included, as if our disparate experiences have been shared by many others. Devins music found me when I needed him most, when I felt most alone, and he accidentally saved my life. He will never know it. I will never forget him. His music is more than reactions, it’s a genesis, a collision, a spiritual enhancement to our mortal lives. I am so grateful to come back to these songs again and again and pass them on when I can. I feel him in a way I can’t describe but my jaw drops and my eyes squeeze tightly shut and my inside universe undulates like a snake and I cry and I laugh and I shout and I scream and I’m probably embarrassing to my species but I know the drive to work the next day won’t be spent dwelling on what I hate but on who I love. I can’t stop watching people react to him. Addicted forever.

#Anathema Internal Landscapes, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Spiritual and metal don't usually go together, but it can happen sometimes, and these Devin songs are a great example of that. Another favorite of mine is the album Weather Systems, from the band Anathema. It may not sound as heavy and powerful as these Devin Townsend songs, but it's just so goddamn beautiful! It's my favorite "let's go running and make some catharsis" album, and I've spent as much tears of joy with it as I've spent sweat drops. To me, even though I'm an atheist, it's music that it's almost 'religious'; that can put you in a kind of trance: eyes closed, arms in the air, having the overjoyful realization that it's amazing to be alive, even though life can be hard at times. The whole album is fantastic, but if you want to react to a few songs, my favorites are those mentioned above. Studio versions are better, IMO.

What a positive, loving video! I wish everyone was so positive and full of gratitude and love! Thank you for reacting to one of my newest favorite songs, and you've earned yourself a new subscriber!
This was easily one of Devin's best songs ever. The story is he was good friends with a young girl whose brother died when he was 16, and Devin was asked to speak at his funeral. He said that it was hard trying to contemplate and understand death at such a young age. If I may offer my viewpoint, put yourself as the person in this song - then imagine you're someone who's lost their closest sibling, a twin perhaps, and having to come to terms with the loss of a huge part of they who made up your identity. Imagine not being able to handle it so well, and the experience of going to the funeral, the anger and depression afterward as you grieve, and then finally find your way out of that pain. The loss and funeral are "Funeral", the anger and depression afterward would be "Bastard", and the path out of it is "Death of Music."
    Again, just my viewpoint.

#SKADOOSH Kelly Devin Townsend has had that effect on me many times. I agree with others that you should listen to DEEP PEACE live from By a Thread. I'd also recommend the first three songs from his album Synchestra: Let it Roll, Hypergeek, and (most importantly) TRIUMPH. The first two very short songs are kind of a prelude to Triumph, with everything from bluegrass to blast beats and a truly epic wall of sound. These three songs together are beautiful and it ends with a lovely solo by Steve Vai. I've never seen any reaction channel react to Triumph, but I think you would both enjoy it a lot. You will enjoy Deep Peace too, be sure to crank up those headphones...it's a really moving song but it starts very quietly and his voice is really incredible.

Devin Townsend is THE most emotional and amazing artist currently working on this rock called Earth/Terra. No one can bring out emotion in music the way he can. No one. And you can have that in writing!!!!

Way back in 2002 I was a film student and I wrote a letter to Devin and his wife Tracy to ask permission to use 'The Death Of Music' in my student film. They were incredibly generous and said yes, provided I didn't release it commercially.
The film itself was kind of crap but the music was amazing.

My dear Kel - I'm an old dude, and my eyes were teary just about the same time that it hit a nerve for you as well. I had to take my glasses off. Devy is one of the most emotional songwriter/performer. We will all be together again with our loved ones when it's our time. I truly believe, but raw emotion for the memories are why they loved us in the 1st place. Thank you for sharing this song with me very emotional but excellent

... what the f just happened? I feel like I was musically mugged with Thor's hammer.
What an indescribable primal experience that was. I have never heard anything like that in my life. That was from another plane altogether.
The ultimate irony here is I am hearing "The Death of Music" and to me it is like music coming to life again in a brand new way in a brand new day. Like everyone here, I have despaired at the obscene abomination mainstream "pop" and "rap" "music" have become. Written, performed and marketed by soulless computers and algorithms. No life. No feeling. Just money.
I weep for the poor souls that believe that is all music is and have no idea of the true musical landscapes that exist beyond the drab programmed existence of their little sandbox. It's all they know. How tragically sad is that?
However, as we heard in "Jurassic Park" - "Life finds a way.". Music lives, it has just gone underground and evolved. I pray that everyone gets a chance to be fortunate and blessed as I have been to be led to this fountain of musical life and beauty. It started with Muse, Tool & Nightwish then moved on from there to other transcendental acts like Dream Theater, Ayreon, Porcupine Tree and now Devin. I now eagerly anticipate more revelatory music and musicians yet undiscovered on this journey.
Thank you Kel and Rich and for all the amazing reactors out there who keep the flame alive and sharing your stories and journey with us. Know that someone vastly deeply appreciates it all *so* much more than you can ever know. Hugs. ))

When I came home to my wife for our 2nd wedding anniversery, she mentioned in a sidenote, that she had never seen me without a beard. In the night of our anniversery, I snuck out of bed in the middle of the night. And shaved. In the morning, waking up, she turned to me. Looked at me in disbelief. Turned her head away, shaking her head.
What can I say? I'll never shave again. Haha!
Update: (having watched this video to the end, by now) a friend once told me: "cry as much as you need to." Not only a year after above mentioned anniverery, my love got killed in a car accident. 1 1/2 year later, driving home from work, "Thank you" by Led Zeppelin was playing on the radio. Love that song! I was happily singing along. Until: "happiness, no more be sad." I had to stop my car on the side of the road. Instantly. I had lost all of my vision in about 2 seconds, 'cause of the tears. That's, what it is. Just, pls:
    don't be ashamed to cry.
Greetings from the far north of Germany.

you two are the FIRST and ONLY reaction people who I actually enjoy watching and more to the point, believe the reactions.
you guys, especially you Kel, since you get more out of the music with your eyes closed, owe it to yourself to take 75 minutes with NO interruptions and just listen to Ocean Machine with a good set of headphones.
As for your comment during "Bastard" Rich, Devin once said in an interview that to him, music is the exhaust of life.
    Always loved that quote.

There's a story that Devin hid under the desk when he played back the final mix of The Death Of Music. If you study the lyrics you realise even more what a lonely & emotional track it is, it's incredible. Was lucky to be there for this gig, on the front row, still have amazing memories of this set of tracks.

Love Bastard. I first encountered it not long after my wife and I came away from religion. A couple of pieces from it were used as the soundtrack in this video (Through these godless eyes),
    th-cam.com/video/Txp8LhL56rU/w-d-xo.html
We immediately fell in love with the song once we tracked it down. Every time we hear it played, it reminds us of a trip to Melbourne where we played it over and over.

You opened a box of tricks with Band Maid, and now you open the Devin Townsend box! Wow.. This gig is a special thing in itself, but between his solo work, the Devin Townsend Project (this outfit) and his project before this one, Strapping Young Lad (and they were a heavy outfit.. be warned if you dip into them).. there's a plethora of emotion in his work. Glad you found him too!!

So this is the first of your videos i have seen. I have been a fan of reactions for quite some time now, seeing people hearing music that i love for the first time is fantastic, and I'm subscriber to many of the bigger names in the reaction field. my favourite for a while has been halflifesistah because there reactions are so natural and just a joy to watch. This one video leaves them all behind, just such a reaction. You too are perfect for each other that much is clear, and whist i don't know what you two have been threw/going threw, you clearly have a bond that can outlast anything.
So onto the recommendations. Now i haven't yet looked at what you have watched already or already know so if i suggest something you have heard, i hope you enjoyed it.
#SKADOOSH Dir En Grey - Vinshuka. Whatever you do and whatever anyone recommends do not watch any other Dir En Grey video prior to this, they rely very heavily on shock value in there videos (excellently paired to the meaning of the songs) and many people who recomend Dir En Grey to reaction channels pick these more shocking ones, often resulting in the poor people been very put off from a band that is actually brilliant.
Some recommendations for the 'Other' Playlist Kel mentioned, Poets of the fall, Type O Negative (there more popular songs( Pete Steeles voice doest it for everyone)) and Deftones. They are very groovy, atmospheric beautiful bands perfect for, off camera time.
and requests just cos i like to share music i love, Steve Vai, pretty much any song, but Tender Surrender, Dark Matter, Bad Horsie or Kill the Guy With the Ball would be my top suggestions. And Tool. Just any Tool. Or all of it, its all good.
Look forward to seeing more :) (sorry for the loooong ass post)
