Ed Thigpen was my drum teacher back in the day and I still have private footage of him teaching and playing drums.
His extremely fast be bop chops plus left hand hi hat technique are unmatched and still amazing by todays standards.
Check out his work with Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson.
Ed Thigpen was truly an incredible drummer, a great teacher and a kind human being with the heart in the right place.

I dig this CAT! So, so tasty when he was with Oscar Peterson! Unique trapset arrangement. 2 rides, multiple crashes. All these guys have sticking that is beyond belief. Big on rudiments! Thanks for post!

Absolutely beautiful tuning across those toms (and snare)... Been tearing my hair out trying to find a tuning I like... this stands out. ...See and hear a lot of Jo Jones in his playing and technique, classy stuff.

Wow that's so great. Thanks for posting this video. I've pretty much only been playing with a Ride to my right, Hi-Hat , snare and Floor tom for the past 3 years to bring up my stick control game and it's helped dramatically.. but I doubt I will never be showy and in control like Mr.Thigpen.. who can do the flair and stay in rhythm with all those trick sticks in motion.. boggles my mind. And ya man.. it don't mean a ting.. without that swing which Ed has in spades.

    Wonderful, thanks for posting.
Amazing, though, how many drum clinics finish with the audience wanting more, the drummer wanting to do more - and some organiser saying 'sorry, we're out of time!'
I think every one I've ever been to has ended like that ^_^

if you want to see some excellent small combo drumming watch a young Ed Thigpin with the Oscar Peterson Trio (Ray Brown, bass). Nothing but class all the way.

Es una lastima el angulo que eligieron para filmar. En una clinic se debe filmar al baterista de costado y del lado que usa el charles. De esta manera se ve el uso de pies y manos.
