I can't agree more with each of your words Sensei. Thanks for sharing and congratulations for this series of podcasts. AMAZING, very sincere words and 100% agree in the different topics you uploaded.
I had a instructor say; beating a fellow student in our style does not impress me, but if you can beat a 20 stone angry truck driver, that will impress me.
How do you get the time to practise in all those styles? I was flat out practising in one style of karate to get the muscle memory correct. And it got harder after 1st Dan because there was more to learn!
i don't know. I used to beat the Second Degree black belts, including an 8 years veteran of the marine Corps, and could even disarm second degree black belts in a real fight when they started with an escrima stick and I started with nothing. However, Sensei wouldn't promote me to black belt because I kept forgetting the last 10% of the last Kata. Makes no sense. People should be promoted by fighting ability, not memorizing incredibly long sequences of moves. After 6 months of failing the black belt test from not being able to memorize kata, I eventually had to quit karate to focus on school and work. I SHOULD have quit school to focus on Karate.
He probably didn't promote you because of a lack of patience. A black belt promotion is more than just fighting ability because you then represent the dojo and the style.
...don't know for sure, but maybe some of that "high dan, high power" thing comes from the military background (the "rank" deal) many of the early Isshinryu instructors came from?
Great discussion, I can relate to many of the things you talk about. I remember being taught by my father as a boy how to protect myself from bullies because of my size. Later formally trained by the grandson of Asato in Hawaii for about 4 years, not seeing any color belts ranks except black, never bother by it just thinking training only, then one day he just gave me shodan great job he said, now it's time to get serious! Rank as it was then as it is today doesn't mean much too me unless the skill matches it, just focused on your practice and the rank will normally come like you mentioned. If I don't get promoted that's fine too, my practice is. Thank you Sensei for reminding us what is truly important.
Hoize Hanshi. This is Sensei Sankararajan from Chennai, India. All your videos are too good, imparting rare Karate Knowledge. Oss! 🥋 Funakoshi time: White Belt (maybe 3 years or more) - Brown Blet (5years or more) - Black Blet (shodan 1st - 5nd Dan and unward to a lifetime training 10th Dan maybe 75- 80 years and over... ) Today: Just pay the monthly fee, be present at class for 70% attendance. Hohan Soken wonder people today has reach 5th Dan in no time... It not who you know, it who know you. Money talks... Now today, being apart of a karate organisation is just one big non-profit service. Be real, paying for training in a group but actually you are doing all the necessary things to get yourself skilled. Today, it's all about profitablity... (martial arts politics) 😔 I called today Karate-Do the 'Drive thru' karate...like KFC karate.

‘The value of rank is relative to the dojo or organization you’re in.’ Well said!!

100% correct. Thank you for posting!
Liked that part where you touched upon being responsible when you gain recognition. 👍

The ranking issue and the lack of education is a serious reality.
I think rank in America ego base I'm more concern with my ability to. Handle myself in a hostile situation
How often did you have senior students leave and start their own style, mainly being a name change? I have seen it, felt sad.

I would have sent the guy in Germany a letter saying that I recognize him back. Ha ha. Seriously though, I bet he was going to ask you for some money.
