- From March 1990, Chet Atkins presents "The World's Most Famous Unknown Band" in a salute to Ralph Emery, and that band is: Glen Campbell, Jerry Reed, & Steve Wariner (guitar); Roy Clark (mandolin), Ray Stevens (piano), Ricky Skaggs (fiddle), Lee Greenwood (saxophone), Steve Gatlin (bass), Barbara Mandrell (steel guitar), and Irlene Mandrell (drums).

When the video starts off with "Good Evening, I'm Chet Atkins" you already know it's the real deal....
Well said
My Dad adored Atkins...told a story about meeting him once in the VA...
@@stinkypinkeee5085 thats awesome... there was a video of Chet Atkins with Eddie Van Halen and Vince Gill on a christmas special on CMT from the 80s I believe I cant find it anywhere but it was super awesome!
Or the exploitation of a dying legend. Chet is a barely walking corpse in this video.
Hell yeah👍👍👍
I'm black, 72 year fart and got auto switched from a jazz video to this video. Man, am I taking a big breath and feeling a little teary eye. What monstrous gaggle of talent and for only two dang minutes we get to see them together like that. There are 3 artists i didn't know, but the rest, at one time or another, I've seen do a variety show, their own show or seeing them on a special some place. i love my jazz, motown, blues but I do love the hell out of the music and entertaining they did. They were entertainers for sure and there won't be their likes ever again. Glenn, I bought his greatest hits cassette tape, decades ago while in the military and wore the hell out of it. I new the words of every song on it. I'm not that religious yet, but one song on there that he seemed to really sing with conviction was "I Knew Jesus Before He was a Super Star." Barbara Mandrell on steel, never had a clue. Roy Clark, who could have more of a mischievous grin on his face while picking. Jerry Reed, I knew of him and Ol' Fred, doncha you know. I just needed a moment to blather a bit, lol. Have a good one you all. I'm off the key and reading the mail.
Good music is just good music.
@@JoeHamelin Absolutely👍. It took me 20 minutes to type what you said in six words.😄😄😄. Have a great and safe day.
Vinyltapelover - I'm a 61 year old white fart & I was weened on the likes of Nat King Cole, Herb Alpert, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Cab Calloway, & Count Basie.
Yes... Good music is Good Music. You have a blessed day!
@vinyltapelover, thank you for your service sir! Read the bible, Jesus STILL saves! It the worlds ALL TIME best seller! Start in the gospel of John. Im a 67 year old white man that cut his teeth on Motown and lets not forget Stax records! like you I wasnt religious either until a friend at work took the time to witness to me about the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ to pay for my forgiveness of sin. Now I LOVE the old hymns and songs about the wonderful things God has done for those that love him with all their heart! Have a blessed day sir!!!😇
10 years younger am I. I recognize most, but, damn, not immediately recalling their names. Great music!
The fact that the video starts with Chet Atkins, while the band has Jerry Reed, Glen Campbell and Roy Clark, that might be the 4 best guitarists on 1 stage ever.
Steve Warner is a master too.
May not be the "best", but certainly the most popular. It's always a cliche' to say that most famous musicians are always the best.
Do you recognize the piano player ?
@@frankwhatton9731That's Ray Stevens on the keys...
Ricky Skaggs is one heck of a picker as well.
Always felt Ray Steven's keyboard talents were under-appreciated because of the focus on the comedic songs. Nice to see him here.
I was gonna say that looked like him
Amen
Beautiful pianist too. Think he is a world class piano player.
The Streak is such a good song
Yes, I've been a solid Ray Steven's fan since "Ahab" came out. Not only is he a great performer and song writer, but he's also a nice guy. Thank you Ray!
“Steve Wariner shared this: “The Greatest Unknown Band plays for the first and last time. Chet Atkins intros the band saying they would be too expensive to sign to a contract. The band included Barbara Mandrell on Steel, Steve Wariner, Jerry Reed, and Glen Campbell on guitar, Irlene Mandrell on drums, Lee Greenwood on sax, Ray Stevens on Keys, Ricky Skaggs on fiddle, Roy Clark on mandolin, and Rudy Gatlin on Bass.”
Thank you for that.
I grew up listening to these legends & still love them 🪕🎻🎸🥁🎹🎷😎❤
Thanks. The only one I couldn't place was Rudy Gatlin on the bass guitar. They didn't really showcase him at all.
Piano ?
@@richardj9016 possibly Floyd Crammer?
Every person on that stage were entertainers. Not just singers or musicians, but, real, multi-talented entertainers.
ESL
Everyone on that stage were bonafide headliners in their own right.
Not artists
@@howie9751Barbara and Glenn and Jerry were successful as artists. So was Steve of course.
Studio Musicians are the backbone of the industry. They never get the credit they deserve.
These guys all worked in the studio but they are far from just studio musicians. They were the cream of the crop for their time. The band leaders. The top names.
There are some who got credit for their own work but not for studio work. Glen Campbell (see video) to name one.
Dude! These guys (and gals) are/were Artists in their own rights. If you were lucky to get one as a Studio musician, you’d have a hit on your hands. 😊
@@buckellard I made the same point and a guy who identifies as a " professional guitarist said I'm wrong.
@buckellard You got it exactly and most if not all also sang, wrote music, acted, did comedy... an amazing array of talent.
May I never meet any of the miserable souls who gave this slice of heaven a thumbs down.

I might give thumbs down because it's not longer. Like an hour longer
They probably saw Neil Armstrong step off the ladder and said "What's so special about climbing down a ladder?"
I now aspire to be as happy as Irlene Mandrell is playing drums!
Where is the who is doing what , list?
A little thing called Blow

Robinho's Left Foot You’re a peach! Thank you! I had all but Steve Wariner.
Geez!! Irlene Mandrell KILLING it on drums.
Big Sister Barbara did pretty good on steel guitar…
@@williampaz2092Thank you guys. I didn’t know the two ladies playing.
I used to do a radio show called “Let There Be Country” I interviewed Irlene Mandrell. What a fantastic artist, she has quite a life resume
very talented
We needed an extended version of this moment of music history.
Yes, definitely way too short.
More talent on that one little stage, than this world has produced, in over fifteen years.
You misspelled fifty... 😆
The Best!
Longer
Technically that's not true, there are much more highly accomplished musicians nowadays than ever before ...just not in mainstream music.
To arrange this ensemble of once in a lifetime world class musicians is nothing less than amazing.
Have you watched the tribute to George Harrison?
@@kennethmelnychuk9737 Or seen the Travelling Wilburys 👍
Roy Clark, a modest, humble, powerhouse of a musician, what a video
Nelson Thibeau: I agree, so well said Sir.
Cousin Roy from 'The Beverly Hillbillies'.
Probably the best guitarist on stage and he let everyone else stand out.
In the UK, we never saw any TV programmes featuring Roy Clark, so thank the stars for TH-cam. Banjo, Mandolin or Guitar, Roy was an absolute talent. Behind his comedy skits, he was a seriously gifted Musician, but many of us in the UK would still not know about him had it not been for TH-cam. I first discovered his talent while looking for 'Duelling Banjos' on here, but I've since seen quite a few great video clips of him, and he never failed to impress. No wonder he's so sadly missed.
@@maxedison8259
Seriously? No shows with Roy Clark on in the UK? Roy was a virtuoso on anything with strings. He would usually be the best in the building on banjo, guitar, mandolin, etc etc like he was born for it.
Greetings from North Carolina btw... love our awesome cousins across the pond.
Each and every one of them would be considered a country music super star.
Not would be, ARE. They have the gold and platinum records on their walls to prove it.
I would have died. Monsters. All of them. Seeing Roy Clark on mandolin makes me smile. Glen Campbell was an absolute beast on guitar. Irlene playing drums....how freaking cool! How can you not smile seeing Lee Greenwood play sax? They're all monsters. Downloading this video. Lucky people to be there.
The humility of them all playing together and each enjoying the others' gift in turns. Amazing...
They should have let this roll for another 10 minutes
bassbone52 - - Yeppers, WAY too short!
Or another half hour. Didn't even let Glen, Ricky or Roy Clark play. Heck Jerry Reed could have played that long by himself.
People sometimes forget the talent of that "guitar man," with all the Smokey and the Bandit stuff, but he was quite gifted.
bassbone52 Oh hellllllll yes!!
They could only afford to pay them for 2 minutes.
What really impresses me is how short and tasteful these solos are.
any one of these players could go on for hours but they know
World class. All of them. When music was music. Real talent. Not technology.
They could give half of their talents to modern performers and still have some to spare. Roy, Jerry and Glenn. 3 of my favorite guitar players. Nice!
I love it. THREE Teles (count 'em, THREE).
I am a Jazz player. Jerry Reed is about the only country player from whom I could never steal much. His technique is beyond mortal comprehension. God bless them all, as they are real pros.
The Best!
RIP, Roy Clark, Jerry Reed and Glen Campbell
Does bring back memories. Bakersfield memories. That steel guitar player was my babysitter a few times. (back in the '50s) All we need now is Cousin Herb. And buying your furniture at Weatherby's.
I only wish this went on a bit longer. Just another ten or fifteen minutes would have been fantastic.
Omg, this is a total gem. Wow, Glen Campbell and Roy Clark together on one stage. That was way too short,
If you like Roy and Glen, you can find them together doing Ghost Riders in the Sky and introduced by Grandpa Jones.
Glen & Roy playing Wildwood Flower, together. 🤣
th-cam.com/video/hS0zNAbBxng/w-d-xo.html
So great, I wish more musicians would collaborate like this, the combined talent is incredible.
Also missing Glen Campbell, such a good guitar player,
considering they only gave Jerry Reed a 10 second solo, there just wasnt enough room for everybody.
them crooked vultures has a pretty good collab of musicians, theyre music is great too
NOT GOOD...THE GOAT!!!!!!
All that talent and all they play is a couple minutes of 12 bar without any Roy Clark solos? Disappointing
Lol ... when Roy Clark can't crack a solo you know you've got some kinda band.
If you are ever wondering about how good Glen Campbell was on guitar think about this. Once, Eddie Van Halen asked a mutual friend (Alice Cooper) if Mr. Campbell would give him a lesson. Status achieved: Guitar God. Legend.
He was the rhythm guitar on Sinatras "Strangers in The Night" and backed everyone up to Jimi Hendrix! Funny how his gitar virtuousity was overshadowed by Galveston and other songs. Incredible talent.

1964-65 I went to our high school freshman dance with Barbara Mandrell. WHat a great family.
So, what happened to her? I remember she was in a really bad car accident ( I think she was in a Mercedes that was one of the first cars that had air bags)

Roy Clark, Jerry Reed and Glenn Campbell. Three of the best guitar pickers ever. Great video!
I knew Lee Greenwood way back in the 70's. You should see him play 2 saxes at the same time...in harmony. A brilliant musician. This is definitely an all star band.
Fun Fact: Barbara Mandrell (seen on the steel guitar) is able to beautifully play all of the instruments in that band and more. Same with Roy Clark.
Didn’t even realize that was Barbara mandrell until I read your comment. I love her music. Any idea when this took place? Awesome video.

That was her sister Irlene Mandrell on the drums.
This was a salute to Ralph Emery performed at the Grand Ole Opry in March 1990.
@@marktwain2053 The running joke was she could play only the drums. Do you know if that's true?
Glen Campbell could play almost every instrument on that stage too.

The only one in the band that was not "famous" was Irlene Mandrell on the drums, and she definitely held her own. Love this clip.
She was well known when the Mandrell sisters were an act.

Just a bunch of Country Boys and Girls having a Good Ole Time..
I don't know why that surprised me, these people have always been incredible, truly talented performers and top notch musicians. I get the feeling they all could have moved one instrument to their left and performed just as well.
Barbara Mandrell on that pedal steel was incredible.
Clark, Campbell, and Reed. These guys...amazing. And Chet Atkins. Good lord.
How cool of them to bring an unknown band on stage like this. If these guys keep it up, maybe they could tour a few more neighborhood bars. Who knows who they'll meet.

I discovered Glenn in about 1962 when he created several 12 string instrumentals of the hit songs of the time. I bought a 12 string guitar and taught myself to play. But no one could play like Glenn. As a member of the famous "wrecking crew" you have likely been listening to him backing most of the 60's famous musical groups without knowing it. Je couldn't read music, but only had to hear a song and he could play it
