Road to Perdition is an underrated gangster film from director Sam Mendes. The film is shot with gorgeous and stunning cinematography from the late great Conrad L. Hall. But there is one shot in particular that packs a punch. In this video essay, we’re going to look at how a single shot can light the spark for the entire film.
Road to Perdition is about an Irish mob family in the Midwest led by John Rooney (Paul Newman). Rooney’s right-hand man is Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks), which makes Rooney’s son, Connor (Daniel Craig), boil under his skin. This jealousy reaches a tipping point at the end of Act One - which is where we’ll focus our film analysis.
Connor has just been scolded by Rooney in front of the organization’s leadership. And as Rooney leaves the table, his arm around Sullivan, Connor finally cracks. The camera slowly pushes toward Connor in shallow focus, which at this point is nothing special. But the then shallow depth of field leaves Connor and follows Rooney and Sullivan behind him, leaving Connor in the frame but out of focus.
Then, just as Rooney and Sullivan exit the frame, we get a rack focus back to Connor in close-up. His cold and chillingly empty eyes tell us everything. Connor has reached his breaking point and he has been ignored for the last time.
This is how Sam Mendes and Conrad L. Hall have shown us Connor twice before - out of focus, ignored, passed over. So, it’s not just a one-off technique...suddenly, this is much more...a motif! With such a simple moment, Sam Mendes gives an elegant lesson in visual storytelling. Instead of cutting between multiple shots, we get one smooth and slow movement forward and a rack focus that puts us into Connor’s head. This is just one shot from Road to Perdition but it just might be the most important shot in the entire film.

@@SHVideografie To be honest, more than half of Nolan’s films have been done with Pfister instead of Van Hoytema (Inception and Dark Knight Trilogy are some of Nolan’s most iconic films, not to mention Memento, The Prestige which are among Nolan’s best and Insomnia which has some great cinematography too). So he deserves a mention as well when we talk about Nolan.

Lord, there is a brooding atmosphere in this film, the cinematography paired with the wardrobe in this film, (which in my opinion, never got the recognition it deserved), Sam Mendes and co. gave it their all, and StudioBinder, you've given us this wonderful exposee about this very subject, loved the video!

Not to be overlooked is the fact that Mendes shot as much of this movie as he could at night or in very low lighting (eg. the nightclub where he almost was shot, the countyside diner, Niti's office, etc.) to set a dark, malicious tone. It magnifies the difficulty of the task which Sullivan has set for himself, and hints at it's foreboding denouement.
It's one of my favorite movies, both for Hank's and Newman's performances, but also for it's screenplay, cinematography, and directing. It definitely helped Newman go out in style, and not just as some cartoon character's voice.

Great video. If I were to shoot that scene differently, instead of pushing in to Connor I would make sure Rooney and Sullivan were in the foreground at the beginning of the shot, screen right. As they walked past Connor, Connor would move from watching them walk by to facing forward. All the while, the camera would be pulling back to make Connor small in the frame emphasizing the emptiness of the room. Thereby, making Connor seem small and insignificant, holding the shot for a few seconds when the room is empty except for Connor. That being said, the original way it was shot was probably the best way.

Awesome! Another way was the reverse shot. Instead of shooting their backs and just Conor's face, follow the father with Conor always fossilized in the corner of the frame (deep focus) and move back. Grab everyone's reaction to the humiliation and at the moment they pass Conor, let them surpass the frame and zoom in on his back , leaving the audience to imagine his feelings (his left hand on the table will be crucial). Their reactions magnify the humiliation even if we don't see his face, and one two smirks from them is also a knife in the back with this shot. I don't know the relationships between the characters, and which of them he wanted to emphasize but this was also perfect.

And also other than JEALOUSY other main theme is REVENGE, an emotion that Michael Sullivan succumbs to which leads him to his death! JEALOUSY - in John rooney's biological son (connor). VENGEANCE - in John rooney's metaphorical son (sullivan)
