    A lovely stove and a very neat firebox too! Any advice on what type of paint to use behind a stove? A lot of talk about heat resistant or clay paint??

      @TheTortoise  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Assuming it’s on a normal rendered wall I would just use normal emulsion. It works perfectly, the only times I’ve had issues is when damp is coming through the wall. In those cases I’d still use emulsion, but I’d also use the fire lots to dry it out. If you’re trying to paint a metal surface then I would go on the “stovebright” website as they have the heat proof paints you’ve mentioned, but this is only needed on metal.

    Please can you advise... when you keep it going over night do you push the control all the way in or do you push it all in and then back it out a bit? Thank you

      Every chimney is different, so there are no hard and fast rules. If you watch our “how to run a stove overnight” short video, this’ll give you the initial building blocks.

      @@TheTortoise Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm surprised I haven't got to the "how to run a stove overnight” video yet - feels like I've watched most of your channel in anticipation of our first log burner arriving!

    Hi Gabriel, I keep trying to not look at Charnwood stoves but they are gorgeous. I'm drawn to either the Island or Cranmore. I can see there are no 'cheap' online prices anywhere so in your opinion are they worth the extra money?

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cost of them is simply off putting. From a sensible, facts and figures point of view, no they don’t seem to be value for money. But of course to a certain extent you’re buying exclusivity and the things that come with that. Charnwood is a lovely company and I like the designs and specialness, but I’m sorry to say I cannot justify the price. Particularly because there are some stoves that performed in testing far better and for less money.

      @The Tortoise OK, I felt that might be the case & it's bit of a shame too! Really appreciate your help, thank you again!

    Have you ever removed Defra bolt from c 5 blue charnwood stove? Is it only possible when pulled out?

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      From memory you need to lay the stove on its back with that stove. Could be tricky with it in place 😬

    This is very helpful, thank you very much!
    Between the C5 and the jotul F205, what would be your preference? They are very close in price and features and I have a hard time deciding.
    The Charnwood seems to heat up faster, be easier to adjust, while the jotul has the strength and perhaps slower heat diffusion.
    Both seem to be very good quality from your videos and it makes sense to buy them for a long time

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They’re certainly both lovely things. If you intend on using the stove as a work horse then the Charnwood has its advantages. However if this will be primarily evenings and weekend use, then the Jotul’s build does make it more special, and there is certainly a greater sense of occasion.

    Hi. We've been trying to choose a new log burner. We visited a local showroom and we were interested in the c four we noticed that the upper fire board was broken. This has put doubt in our minds. Is this a common occurrence and are they expensive to replace?

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They’re made of vermiculite board. It’s easily broken in showrooms as things often get bumped about, but generally it’s not an issue as this is easy and cheap to replace and if you’re careful it’s not regularly broken.

    Hi Gabriel just wondering what you think of Newman stoves thanks

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve not tested one, but they’re cast iron so it will almost certainly be an eastern import. These stoves tend to be fairly basic, but do a reasonable job for most people. I would expect it to not have great control or long burn times, but if it is as a back up and focal point it should be great.

    Shame they dont make the bembridge in a bigger size

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't look the same, but the Bembridge is literally the C range with a different door, so if you were to look at the Charnwood C8 for example, that is the bigger version (only with a different door and handle).

    Looks good but Trust Pilot gives them POOR….?

    • @TheTortoise
      @TheTortoise  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea but that’s just because they don’t pay them. TrustPilot really is the worst for that, depending on how much you pay the more reviews you get and you can bury bad reviews really quickly and easy. I’m fairly convinced they will stack the deck against you unless you pay them.
