I've got a question without engineering tools is there better way (for us tradies) of checking the accuracy of a level beyond using a flat level surface. Did they mention a self check process?

Just like someone else mentioned below, I would also like to know "Why the manufactures do not decrease the space between the lines and the bubble"? It is only easier to check for level if you don't have to waste as much time trying to visualize if the spacing is equal.
Totally guessing here, but people use levels for slope to so I imagine when the bubble is touching one line and not the other it means it's a certain angle. So you need a bit of space to gauge it in that scenario. Totally guessing though.
@DefinitelyNotDan well I am austrian originally and one of the issues is the labor price for all the stone work that would looks nice on those buildings. In Austria cheap landlords have the stone work removed when it should be renovated, makes the whole building look like it comes from an ex communist country. But fewer and fewer people know how to work stone...prices go up.
Stabila is a great level, and I've had mine for more than 15 year. They are extremely durable and can last forever, but there is one big problem that needs to be fixed, which will make them god. The lines that separate the eye in the meedle are to far apart, which take a lot of time to hit it dead centre. I am an installer and for me accuracy and speed is of great importance, and if Stabila looks at how Sola's eye is made, with such a small a margin between the eye and the lines, and implement that ratio in their level, Stabila will become THE best level on the market..! You were there, so please share this with them if possible. Cheers from Bulgaria.
Mate i am bulgarian and i use only sola levels i have 1 stabila level i can say the same but sola have the opposite problem the buble is dead on the lines when perfectly leveled and its sometimes so hard to read the vial without crossing your eyes
I have had the same 1200mm Stabila for 25 years ,the other day it fell 15 feet off scaffold, bounced off the concrete floor ,still works perfectly, it is so good I set the stabilizer incedents on my giant scale rc airplane!
I worked a Saturday for a Stabila 72” type 87 back in 1998. Still have it today. The accuracy is still spot on. The vials are clear but the bright green is mostly gone. Still not bad for 25 years. It’s been dropped off roofs, banged around in beds of trucks, fallen over hundreds of times. It’s a survivor. Just bought a 24”
Why does no level company make one with a horizontal vial at the very end? Say you're on a ladder working alone and you need to transfer a point from a distance. From your vantage point you can't see the center vial. I'm talking about using an 8' level.
If I were you and this is something you encounter quite often, I'd get an aluminum straight edge and a shorter high precision level, so you can put/tape it on the end, where you need it. Done it several times. The Hultafors Libella2000 is very suitable for this, although it might not be widely available in your neck of the woods. It should be possible to find another brand though. As mentioned in the video, setting of the vial is essential, as well as the radius on the inside of the vial - the shallower and more accurate the radius, the more accurate the level will be.
Hands down the BEST levels I have ever owned ! I have 5 . Drove over one once with a scissor lift ( oops ) bent it about 5 or 7 degrees at the center bubble . Amazingly it didn't break the bubbles vial and even MORE amazingly , I stood on it to straighten it out and afterwards it's been spot on for 17 years plus ! No I'm not getting paid for the post but can't stress enough My belief that they are the best choice on the market !
To any Stabila marketing exec watching this in the future - I watched Kyle's video when it came out back in 2019, having never heard of Stabila before. Because of this video alone and the discovery of Stabila, I've since bought seven levels, a laser, a distance finder, and the angle finder. Please share profits with Kyle accordingly, haha. Kyle, well done man, been following you for years and love everything you build. Keep it up!

It's all good having the vial set to .5mm /m but if the level bends, it's game over. Just today I checked a work mates 4' stabila and it was out 5mm. I prefer Stanley fatmax because the reinforcement around the middle vial, which is usually a weak spot on levels.

It was so old they had to call Germany to look up in there old records from the companies original owners to see if it was even there’s. As soon as they found it in there old Catalogue they gave him a new one no questions asked. I was impressed.

I em a tile setter. Two of my Stabila levels went out on me. I had bought them because of the life time warranty. Both went out of level. They did not replace or repair my life time warranty levels because they were dirty. No matter how hard real tile setters try an keep their levels clean, the bonding agents we use will eventually build up over time. They were not bent and they yellow for most part was still viable.
@@RRBuildings hmm, well I did return it to the place I bought it from which was a tile supply store near me. It wasn't an official Stabila spokesman. I will have to find a dealer near me and see what they say about it.
Pretty impressive - I must say, though I'm not really surprised the way you seem. They're serious business, and have been for decades... I would say a trip to Sweden could probably be equally impressive, maybe not in numbers, but definitely in quality. Hultafors is no joke either. Far from it. Antistatic vials that will stay fluid and keep the bubble together from -20°C to +50°C - the more you're willing to invest, the flatter the curve in the vials. Precision stuff! Have a look at the Libella 2000 or the MST 180 for some really serious stuff.
I love my Stabila Levels (Tile & Stone work), the only complaint is, most US dealers don't want to honor Stabilas lifetime warranty, telling me my trade is too abusive or some other BS. I've purchased two sets in over 25 years, so warranty or not, I'm still a satisfied customer.
I had an issue too. So I just put it on the salesman's desk and grabbed a new one off the shelf. It's why I bought it at our lumber yard is for the service. After lumber yard contacted the stabila rep it was no big deal. Lumber yard was lazy, stabila was easy. Next one is going straight to stabila rep at the trade show.

my experience with Stabila from Amazon is as follows. I purchased 2 levels 4' & 2' I cut my finger on one of them called the Stabila customer service # & was told if I sent them in they would look at the level to determine if there was a problem. The problem was one of the edges had a barb on it the other edges had potential sharp edges also. Rather than pay for the shipping I filed the edges myself. Please keep in mind these were not the top of the line Stabila but the less expensive models. I was also informed they were not made in Germany but Asia China I recollect. If you purchase one of these products spend the money and get their top of the line product.Other than that I have never had an issue with the levels.

The electronics module stopped working on my 196-2E and Stabila wanted a huge sum to replace it mostly because they did not have any more of the older modules so beware of the electronics which is nice while it works!
My friend is buyer for oldest hardware store in Oregon we build thing an he was always talking stabila levels so I got the set of three. This is what I've found to dislike about the famous yellow levels. I have several levels that horizontal bubble just touches the black level index marks! But stabila level's bubble sits in center of black index marks but there is a space between the bubble on each side of the bubble an mark. That makes me have to center for level by eye, not by the bubbles touching inside both index marks! Thanks, Tim
I used a level to put up my kitchen cabinets, and after I was done, it looked odd, but the level said it was good. Then I flipped the level around and realized that it was off by 1.5 inches over 10 feet. I discarded it right away, and check levels when I get them now.
My laser Stabila 70L Laser-System had the incorrect instructions for loading the AAA battery’s. This caused lots of frustration. Stabila are a great brand, that’s why I had so mush trouble, I would not believe that the battery loading instructions were wrong. BUT they were WRONG.
Love Stabila levels. In fact stabila is the only level we use . I tried to return a 6 foot level once that wasn’t reading true and my stabila level sales person told me not to bother . To be able to utilize the stabila warranty your level has to be in darn new perfect condition He has been a stabila levels seller for years and had only seen one accept back . I remember him asking me how long I had the level to which I replied 10 years and his reply was “ you got your moneys worth”. So the warranty is pretty much non existent.
I applaud the attention to detail and accuracy used. However, in the real world of construction, drops, banging, hot cold... it would appear to effect the performance. Being too accurate comes at a cost when we are building with organic materials that will change and soon not be so perfect. Just normal expansion contraction, moisture levels. Those elements will not change no matter how precise it was installed. I am a perfectionist but have learned to pick my battles. Thanks for the tour, very enlightening and I also would prefer we buy from friendly countries that maybe not hate or take us over. Germany has been a good friend. I served the Berlin Brigade, awesome people and country.
I would be checking every room, wall, floor in that place for level plumb and square. It would be a problem if I found an area in that building was out of true.
Broooooo. That would seriously be so amazing if someone got a level that wasn’t inspected properly and there was a spider inside. I would be so stoked!!!!!! It would be worth a lot more definitely one of a kind
What, you visited a place about an hour away from where I live?! (Karlsruhe area) Sometimes the world seems so small. Stabila...We have one of these levels at home, its a couple of decades old but still in very good shape. Their build quality is amazing.
Everything is still new after the bombing. Plus America funded them back up. They had a very heavy stigma to "act right" after they lost the war too, very heavy.
Won't buy again. Customer service not good. I bought a 24" digital stabila, very limited use a it still looks new, always kept in stabila bag when not in use and the digital part quit working, I contacted them and they said nothing they could do so I would have to use it a a standard level or send it in and pay 150 buck off my own money to get it fixed.. pretty disappointed since I spent over 250 dollars for it...
Kyle, I watched the Perkins Brothers Builders video on them trying to get their 4ft Stabila repaired/replaced because one of the vials broke. Stabila denied them because they said the level was bent. If this level was bent it was only bent by a couple thousandths of an inch. I was so disappointed when I saw it.
Your first level was the 8 ft Stabila? Wow cut from a different cloth. I am ten years in and I got lucky to get a jammer for Christmas last year. 2xfur works great if you can pick a straight one :]
I tell you I asked an old construction friend he's old school construction build poll buildings and such, I asked him a few times, when is a level not level, and when is a square not square??? Wanting to know how to till right. He says, " when it's not level, or when it's not square""!!!!!!
Just a tremendous video Kyle. Glad you could get away. I have 2 Stabila levels and would trade them for anything. I also enjoyed their commercial & the Tyvek Drain, all the way through.
This is cool, Kyle. Thank you very much for sharing. Would love to know if you saw anything else while you were here? You're a Festool guy as well, aren't you? Cheers (Prost! ;-) ) from a fan in Berlin.
Hi, A different video than normal, but an interesting subject. I think we all are less than genteel with our levels and it is great to see the amount of technical info that goes into them.
I don't get it... I appreciate quality tools, but a level only tells you when something's perfectly vertical or perfectly horizontal, nothing in between. But no house floors nor walls are perfect to 0.3 mm. So what's the point? I have a $25 level that's probably accurate to 0.5-0.8 mm and that level of inaccuracy is not noticeable by the naked eye. So what are you guys leveling exactly that needs that degree of precision and accuracy? To me it's like creating the ultimate butter knife that's so perfectly dull, but not too dull, just right.
I have 3 master level that I bought in 1988 in california each of them cost me 150 dollars 1 of them I cut it to have 1 level of 3 foot and 5 foot level and all the carpenters had master level none had stabila just until 94. I see some stabila levels but for me master level is better specially to check ceiling and straight edge but they don’t make it anymore
Should make them with screws for adjustment I've gone through loads of stabila levels got 3 on the van 4 actually none are 100% accurate went in local tool store 1 out his 5 stabila levels were dead accurate I purchased that one it's the only accurate level I own..
I heard that Stabila doesn't stand behind their products well.. Items shipped back are not fixed. For their prices they need to either have a bullet proof product or stand behind what they sell.
Are they manufacturing the Red, Green and Grey levels for other companies, I have never seen these Stabila colours, I cannot find reference to them anywhere, I want a Green Stabila ")
Love my stabila 10 inch magnetic torpedo levels. When welding pipe supports i realized after a year the bubble on both levels shows level one way, then when i flip it around its close to the line (without crossing over it). I wonder if this is enough to warrant paying to send it in under warranty?

My friend is buyer for oldest hardware store in Oregon we build thing an he was always talking stabila levels so I got the set of three. This is what I've found to dislike about the famous yellow levels. I have several levels that horizontal bubble just touches the black level index marks! But stabila level's bubble sits in center of black index marks but there is a space between the bubble on each side of the bubble an mark. That makes me have to center for level by eye, not by the bubbles touching inside both index marks! Thanks, Tim
Kyle, can you do a Stabila 600 video on how electricians use it for electrical boxes, recess lighting using the halo thin led 6", etc?
I used a level to put up my kitchen cabinets, and after I was done, it looked odd, but the level said it was good. Then I flipped the level around and realized that it was off by 1.5 inches over 10 feet. I discarded it right away, and check levels when I get them now.
My laser Stabila 70L Laser-System had the incorrect instructions for loading the AAA battery’s.
This caused lots of frustration.
Stabila are a great brand, that’s why I had so mush trouble, I would not believe that the battery loading instructions were wrong.
BUT they were WRONG.
Do you guys have 'Sola' levels in the states? I like Sola because they feel heavy duty and reading the bubble is a lot easier than on Stabila.
All levels are definitely not the same ... Stabila are the best ...nice vid as always
All Stabilas are not the same either... There are other ones available out there for top$ to match.
Thanks for being on the level.
Great Video Brother! the Vintage Levels are Dope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for Sharing!
Yes they were
i agree i am a uk brickie i only use stabila for decades
Awesome video. Too bad you were there on their day off. Just ordered a 48" and 16" 196 and can't wait to get them!
You have no idea how much I want a bucket full of tiny levels like that XD
My dad had one of the wooden ones, I believe it was walnut. Unfortunately, as he got older he neglected his tools and it was ruined.
All mine are out. Wish I was able to recalibrate the bubble myself.
@5:20 “the amount of level” very punny! Cool video for sure! Thanks for taking us on the tour Kyle.
I would be checking every room, wall, floor in that place for level plumb and square. It would be a problem if I found an area in that building was out of true.
I have an old empire made in usa level still after 25 years reads 100 % I have stabila aswell and they are excellent
did you get to keep the spider vial as a souvenir?
I've never heard of the brand, thanks for the tour, I'll have to keep a look out for the brand. Here locally Stanley and Starrette has the market.
Broooooo. That would seriously be so amazing if someone got a level that wasn’t inspected properly and there was a spider inside. I would be so stoked!!!!!! It would be worth a lot more definitely one of a kind
Kyle, Why don't you use a Stabila Laser measure? They do 165 feet with 3/32nd inch accuracy.
who says I don't?
Because 3/32" is not good enough for Kyle lol
@@agoogleuser1594 When Kyle is triangulating to square a wall, he can't get any closer than 1 1/2 sixteenths, even as the perfectionist he is.
@@RRBuildings You haven't used it on camera that I have seen. You use the layout laser but I have never seen you use the laser measure.
Used it in the dream shop build series I believe ... had to measure between 20’ posts.. it works great.
What, you visited a place about an hour away from where I live?! (Karlsruhe area) Sometimes the world seems so small. Stabila...We have one of these levels at home, its a couple of decades old but still in very good shape. Their build quality is amazing.
The best
Nice visit for you I'm from Romania but live in UK lovely video
Peaked my interest: what products did you find that haven't seen in the US?
Smaller levels and some specific trade levels for electricians and plumber that were cool
I have had 2 levels go bad. The bubbles leaked. A laser go out of tolerance. Warranty was really good and easy.
Look at the cleanliness of that place! Most of Germany is that clean.
Everything is still new after the bombing. Plus America funded them back up. They had a very heavy stigma to "act right" after they lost the war too, very heavy.
Little late coming across this but so interesting
Love my four foot bought it at a benefit auction for 10.00 yes that cheap love it it is the best.
wow I have that old wood level 2nd one from top at beginning did not know who manufactured it though lol
hope you enjoyed your trip !!! best greetings from Germany :)
Had a great time
They are a total class act !
I returned a defective vial expecting to get it repaired or replaced....got refused. They don't honor warranty any more
Kyle, I watched the Perkins Brothers Builders video on them trying to get their 4ft Stabila repaired/replaced because one of the vials broke. Stabila denied them because they said the level was bent. If this level was bent it was only bent by a couple thousandths of an inch. I was so disappointed when I saw it.
3:04 the red and gray ones are then sold by WÜRTH. Love my Stabilas.
"Level of detail"..good 1!
I have some belly button lint I'll trade for them then, since you said you would trade them for anything.
This video was on another level
Just bought the jamset pack from KMS tools, 78" and a 32" 👍
be careful, KMS tools is a death warrant for a bank account haha
@@lebowski9514 true that man, especially when you have a business... The write offs are just too tempting!
This is cool, Kyle. Thank you very much for sharing. Would love to know if you saw anything else while you were here? You're a Festool guy as well, aren't you? Cheers (Prost! ;-) ) from a fan in Berlin.
I wish I would have went to festool... maybe next time
@@RRBuildings In your line of business, the trip should probably go to Mafell in stead.
Excellent as usual!!!
Thanks for talking me in to spending the extra money!.lol
Should make them with screws for adjustment I've gone through loads of stabila levels got 3 on the van 4 actually none are 100% accurate went in local tool store 1 out his 5 stabila levels were dead accurate I purchased that one it's the only accurate level I own..
I heard that Stabila doesn't stand behind their products well.. Items shipped back are not fixed. For their prices they need to either have a bullet proof product or stand behind what they sell.
That’s a lie
I swear by them. I dropped a 4ft level while setting a gable. The level fell 3 stories and still reads true.
Cool video. What's with the Canadian flag at the Stabila office?
They hang flags of the visitors country... they flew the American flag the day before for me
@@RRBuildings That's cool. At first I thought maybe they had a Canadian parent company or something.
