This mask head voice idea is a completely misleading term and makes everyone believe a head mix with forward placement is automatically "masked head voice". He was using a head mix for some of the notes. Btw, Mitch Grassi also uses a head mix with forward placement. His mix seems to be headier than a typical head mix, which causes a lot of confusion. There are different ratios of chest to head and vice versa when it comes to the mixed voice, but people just seem to attribute it to a specific ratio.
Mixed voice is the combination of head and chest voice. There are different types of mixed voice: - chest mixed voice: when a singer uses chest resonance more than head resonance. - Middle mixed voice: when a singer uses both resonances equally. -Head mixed voice: when a singer uses head resonance more than chest resonance. Alex Newell is using 90% head resonance and 10 % chest resonance. That is why it sounds really sharp but it can’t be considered pure head voice.
Why can I listen to him and still tell he a guy his voice is do have a passable female quality sound but not in it's entirety it's more Androgynous (gender neutral) with a leaning Feminine quality
I have noticed this too. Alex has gotten his vocal cords examined and they’re nearly identical to that for a normal female soprano. There still seems to be some differences though. His voice does sound like it has some subtle more masculine/androgynous undertones sometimes, particularly around the third and fourth octaves; also his voice sounded more like that when he was younger, just check out him singing I’m A Star. I just kinda consider Alex’s voice to be in it’s own category in some aspects. For example, a lot of people have to spent years expanding their range but Alex has seemingly had most of his massive 4+ octave range since he was in The Glee Project when he was just barely out of high school
@@islandeatssand684 lol tenor altino the true countentenor voices sound like that they still retain their tessitura of puberty even though they got a octave lower added during puberty they texture make up is Androgynous it sound between a tenorino (very light bright above average tenor , and a female alto ) they very rarely sound between a Tenor and a female soprano it varies from person to person that quality is rare just like the tenorino , the dramatic Contralto called Contralto profoundo and also this rare type of male bass called Oktavist these men have vocal cords bigger than the average male. When you listen expecting to hear it yeah you'll find "textures" that you'll hear as masculine. But if this were a blind vocal you would assume it was a female with a few androgynous aspects in tonal quality. The lines between male and female voice here mean practically nothing in this case as they are going to be interpreted along the lines of whatever you're already predisposed to believe about the singer.
