they have a composition and interpretation level so high that even if they showed the full process, probably no band would be able to re-record it (not english speaker)
Agreed. I so love watching and learning how my favorite musicians compose things and how they play these pieces of music. There's a lt of great information here! I wasn't a big fan of The Astonishing when it first came out. But it has grown on me big time and I love it as much as SFAM, Dramatic Turn of Events and Images And Words. Great stuff here!
Christopher Gillman well from what ive read he wouldve joined dt if the schedule worked for him but he joined the dregs at that time instead cause they toured less
There's something so freaking inspiring about watching two absolute masters at their craft talk about the music they worked on tirelessly together and playing it in a room together, man. Beautiful.
Some of Dream Theater's finest work. The Astonishing has such a hopeful message and reminds me there are people out there who understand where I'm coming from.
"People, can you hear us? Peace has been restored The silence has been broken Music reigns forever more We sing a song of freedom Together we are bound People, we shall never hold you down We will build our world on common ground And we'll live once more Eternally In harmony Our lives will be Astonishing Again" Hell yeah!
@@Ahov I was talking about The Astonishing. Man, I just realized I didn't listen to any DT songs since several years now, that used to be my favorite band so far...
There are way too many negative remarks about The Astonishing. I respect some of the opinions but it's much better than the majority that simply don't get it or are stuck in a bias about the band's personnel. It reminds me of when Dark Side of the Moon came out and a lot of my college friends hated it because it didn't have Sid Barrett on it or it didn't sound like Pink Floyd's earlier stuff. Nonsense! Later they accepted it for how great it really was totally forgetting how they dissed it. TA is a great album worth listening to several times before a valid opinion is decided. Even great music needs to grow on you. I bought it and listened to it sporadically and liked it but wasn't blown away at first since I was too busy and didn't really take the time to listen to it in its entirety. And if all you did is listen to the youtube version your opinion is worthless since you are NOT hearing it with full richness and fidelity. I got a chance to listen to it in its entirety when I went on a road trip with some friends. We listened to the entire 2 CD set UNINTERUPTED. I didn't have to drive so I got a chance to read the lyrics as it played. It tells a story about a time in the future when music is banned and what happens when somebody finds a music player and turns on others to music for the first time. And how it affected the people who assembled together and risked their lives to hear it. I was BLOWN AWAY! Over two hours of musical magnificence! We listened to it again on the return trip and I liked it even more. I've been a DT fan since the late 80's and I own all their albums and CD's with a few concert DVD's as well. They've gone through a lot of changes but for me they've only gotten better. But it wasn't until Jordan Rudess joined the band that they became my 2nd favorite band after RUSH. Too bad if you disagree but DT is better with Rudess who is a master musician and in my top 5 keyboardists in the last 50 years. He's on almost everybody's top 10 list (those whose opinions that matter anyway). Nobody mentions Kevin Moore in their top 10 either!
The chromatic ascending part they explain around the minute 13 is great, i love how its crafted around the theory and it creates this crazy tension as the notes get higher. The principle is simple, but i would never have thought of applying it to a "happy"sounding theme. Great composition
The fact that the latest DM albums are based around themes that are getting a spin every now and then although is not as "progy" and "out there" as for example on AWAKE, it actually makes more sense to me. You can follow the album, listen to it start to finish and it also makes the music very memorable. It shows musical maturity and it is actually most enjoyable. And it doesn't lack technique at all as well....
You guys nailed it with this album, heck my wife and my children all listen to it over and over similar to Phantom and LesMis! I also don't miss the constant language that the ex drummer loved to throw around. You all just stepped up to whole new level of class act with Mangini and these past few albums!
Id definitely compare this album to musicals such as phantom and les mis, its very much written like a musical! I always say to myself that this album would sound incredible with multiple vocalists for each character.
Excellent, looking forward to seeing the series discussing this ambitious project. I've spun it probably 10 times. Each time little bits emerge that you notice! Whether lyrical or musical!
Petrucci's awareness of how the guitar fits into the overall band sound is really cool. His parts always seem to compliment rather than step over what the other musicians are doing.
yes! i would love to see them together like this video doing the crazy runs they do together and all of the extremely fast playing slowed down and then at tempo. and also how they write them.
Gone through EVERY studio album, bootleg, interviews, videos, etc. after 15 years. These guys... the music, the feel, the DT experience, it's all gone a good couple of years ago. I still follow and listen to them for what they were, not what they are, so far.
The Astonishing is the reason I started listening to Dream Theater. I've never been a fan of metal/prog rock, but after listening to The Astonishing at least 15x start-to-finish, now Dream Theater is all I listen to! This album is extremely complex and deep, not only on a musical level, but on a subject matter level. It takes a LONG time to unpack, definitely on par with CS Lewis or Shakespeare. Absolutely amazing music. It's all the better once you read the backstory on their site and hear James singing as the various characters and narrator. Then it's taken to a whole new level! Kudos, guys! I wish I had discovered DT a decade ago! I can't wait to see you in DFW area next month!
Anyone learning, which every musician does from the beginning to the end, realise that, yes, JP and JR are some serious theory and classically trained savant-like musician's, but also remember this, tunes and melody start in the head and/or are played on one's instrument(s) simultaneously in the process of making what one hear's here. So that aside, embrace theory when and where you can but remember the music is something that comes from you firstly!!
How many people recognize that the "Brother" theme as actually the "Cygnus: Bringer Of Balance" theme? It was taken from the Rush Hemispheres lyrics: "I have passed into Olympus As was told in tales of old To the city of Immortals Marble white and purest gold..." John Petrucci is a huge fan of that album especially so it makes sense that he would think this up not realizing where he got it from.
He's been talking about it that way since the beginning. John wants to make it into a novel and a movie. I personally don't think there's enough material to it, and it's super cheesy. Fine as a metal album, but I would probably laugh at a novel or movie with this story.
While they may be wishing for it to be widespread, I think realistically you won't see it be more than at most a book and a live show. Even if JP would love for it to become a movie or a musical - not going to happen because DT doesn't have that economic pull.
+noxonnor Imagine if it was Metallica that had came up with this. People would probably be saying it was genius and there'd definitely be a film and book
Good initiative to make this series. Look forward to more episodes. Got a chance to see you guys at the palladium and in the meet and greet. Was an amazing show! Loved the album. Side stepping a bit here, hope you guys remember it will be 25 years soon for images and words. Maybe an anniversary tour in line? Just throwing it out there....
+icedragon769 noodling (aka improvising) is a useful tool for an artist of any skill level. It should not be the only method of developing content for sure but I assure you, plenty a professional noodle. Noodle on my friends

They probably recorded the whole series in one day. So "next time" already happened, with the same underwhelming mic setup. We'll see if they did a wardrobe change for later episodes.
VERY cool video and I totally look forward to more in this series. I've been listening to Dream Theater since Images...and consider The Astonishing one of the most interesting and moving albums of all-time.
It’s a big piece of music, but taken in small bites it can be enjoyed for the epic it is. As always, they reached for something unique and challenging, raising the bar yet again.
John's optimism and insistence that the Astonishing will be adapted for TV or Film is adorable.
It shows maturity to expose the composition process. As a fan, I couldn't feel more privileged.
they have a composition and interpretation level so high that even if they showed the full process, probably no band would be able to re-record it (not english speaker)
same. This is what I've waited for since I discovered the band. The writing process.
what the fuck are you talking about. DT has fans all over the world you racist.
Agreed. I so love watching and learning how my favorite musicians compose things and how they play these pieces of music. There's a lt of great information here! I know Im kind of randomly asking but do anyone know of a good website to watch newly released tv shows online?
"Just when you thought it was as dramatic as it can get, it gets even more dramatic" - Dream Theater in a nutshell
A dramatic turn of events...
And the award for the best pun goes to...:D
Love the chemistry between the two
wrong, rudess was supposed to join before lte was even a thought
Christopher Gillman
well from what ive read he wouldve joined dt if the schedule worked for him but he joined the dregs at that time instead cause they toured less

so, youre a self professed idiot?
Nope. A Moore fan and honest critic.
+Zakariah Lafreniere At last!! A listener with CRITERIA!!
Kev, I miss you too!
"It's not a movie, at least not yet."
Oh Petrucci, you cheeky tease, you
if this becomes a movie im going to freak the fuck out
+Zakariah Lafreniere ...I caught that..lol..
But still, there are some guys who love this music. For You trash, for others gold.

I could watch Jordan and John talk and play together for hours!
This is perfect. I can't wait until they release a live concert with, hopefully, a making of the record.
Still praying
I love the album, and I also love this series, looking forward to the next episodes!
There's something so freaking inspiring about watching two absolute masters at their craft talk about the music they worked on tirelessly together and playing it in a room together, man. Beautiful.
Even their TH-cam videos are 20 minutes long :p
This video is amazing. Next one HAS to be 40 minutes.
Some of Dream Theater's finest work. The Astonishing has such a hopeful message and reminds me there are people out there who understand where I'm coming from.
I've been waiting for videos like this one since 1998.
"People, can you hear us?
Peace has been restored
The silence has been broken
Music reigns forever more
We sing a song of freedom
Together we are bound
People, we shall never hold you down
We will build our world on common ground
And we'll live once more
Eternally
In harmony

Astonishing
Again"
Hell yeah!
These guys are my musical gods.
Exactly how I feel!
Exactly how I felt, before that last record :'(
@@springfield350dx Really? Dream Theater (2013) has some great songs.

That "Brother Can You Hear Me" melody has been in my head from the moment I heard it. Awesome stuff !!!

It bothers me how Jordan has that tablet with the full sheet music to the song and yet it never gets released to the public
so much fantastic valuable info! I play the keys. The Astonishing was my first experience of what Dream Theater was about!
the problem with this videos is that i can't see the whole thing without having to stop and listen the album. It's just a masterpiece.

I still don't understand how it did happen at 17:00.
"its an album, its not a movie... well atleast not yet" *smirks* MY BODY IS READY
That minor chord at the end of the song actually had a meaning... wow
Every decision any artist makes has a meaning. "Noodling around until it sounds nice" is what amateurs do.

Molto molto interessante! Bellissimo progetto speriamo che il nuovo episodio esca presto ;)
Very insightful thank you guys
These blokes are brilliant! !
Thank you for the great journey. For haters and heavy metal lover, listen to the Enemy Inside. This is Dream Theater and they made a theater.
Hagrid plays the guitar ???
TheKATTofficial you're a wizard harry
It's very cool when you present those musical connections. I'm a musician and I've noticed some things, but this serie of videos shall be interesting.
Dec 5..can't wait!
they are the best..
Awesome!!!!
