The story and the world is so different from the average jrpg setting, I can see why a lot of people love this game, maybe one day I will give another try, as I still feel bitter about not finishing it.
It's hard for me to judge this game thru a modern lens. I played it the year it came out and quite enjoyed it. The final boss battles were brutal, but that's probably because I didn't grind. I did beat it after a few tries. From what I understand, they ran out of money and couldn't finish the game, which is why disc 2 was so truncated. But back in the day everything was new and exciting and I didn't know any better. I couldn't play a game like this in current year, but back in the day it was pretty dope.
Yes nowadays it is not easy to adjust to some old school games, as there are many qol inprovements exists in modern games which makes a lot of things more straightforward and easier. Despite this I had great times with old school games, but there are also many which I cannot play as it aged badly. Regarding Xenogears I grinded a bit but not too much, and I found the difficulty ok, however I did not made it to the final bosses so I don't know if my leveling was sufficent so far. Yes I heard the same about that the second disc was a bit rushed because of the lack of funding.
I missed the last couple hours of the game due to a big breakup at the time. Couldn't get back into it ;) probably couldn't handle the pace now, but thank you for the memories lol

i only made it about five hours before quitting xenogears twenty years ago, but i think i was at a point where i was burnt out from too many jrpgs, and probably didn't give it a fair chance. i might like to give it another chance some time, but i'd need to get it on a platform where i'd actually play it, which is the real challenge anymore.
Jrpg burn out is a real thing. I have to be careful too, because jrpg-s are my favourite genre but playing too much definiately cause burn out that is why I am trying to rotate the different genres that I play. If you want to play xenogears nowadays, you have multiple options depending on what systems do you have. :)

@@TheBacklogQuest. low chance it's not on your radar already, but if you haven't played terranigma yet, i'd definitely recommend it! i will also say that one i've always wanted to play but haven't yet is panzer dragoon saga.

I played RPGS extensively in the ps1 era and during that point in time I think I considered Xenogears my favorite ps1 rpg ever for years to come at that point. Even with the unfinished 2nd disc and 90s jank it was a god tier (no pun intended) game to me. Unfortunately though the game is rough and between the graphical style aging so poorly and the face that the UI / QOL features are lacking i wouldn't even consider it a top 3 playstation 1 rpg these days. You probably would have absolutely loved it if you played it when it was brand new. That being said the biggest sin the game is guilty of is not killing off Dan in the opening scene.

Xenogears had a faaaaar better story and world building than any JRPGs that I played in ps1. The opening sequence alone got me invested and intrigued on its world. It's probably the best story for an rpg that I played on all platforms. But the 2nd disc, the encounter rate, platforming and dungeons are all frustrating asf lmao So I can't blame yah. Oh there's also some enemies and bosses that can only be beaten by following a pattern that you have to figure out. lol
Same here regarding the world and the intro. In the first few hours I was really enjoying it and was looking forward how the story will fold out and I was sure that this game will be fantastic. The platforming was annoying especially because of the camera and the bad controls. The encounter rate was ok for me, however it is on the verge of too much.
My foster mum who loved jrpg games said the first half of Xenogears was one of the best games she had ever played but something in the 2nd half made it one of the worst games also. I always wanted to try it for myself but alas I guess I will have to wait for that eventual Square Enix cash grab with the Brave Fencer Musashi fans who are waiting for their game too
At lest you tried. This is old school jrpg, most younger players would not finish it. But if you had PSX as a kid you know the magic of old sprites and midi music. Xeno had great story and combat but problems in production (budget) are especially visible on CD2, pacing is messy, many cut content or just exposition in ton of text, you wouldn't survive that man XD Overall fine video, quick topics are fine, and don't feel bad about not finishing the game... But IMO you have to finish something to get grasp of the themes and level of understanding needed to be able to make sound and leveled conversation about the subject. (If that's your thing.) Keep up good work, and keep improving your pronunciation and ENG overall, have a like and a sub, I'll be watching your progress 😄 🇵🇱
The soundtrack is legendary, and there are even a few good lines in the script. But none of them are in the main story, which is just bad Evangelion fanfic mixed with 3am stoner misinterpretations of philosophy 101 textbooks. And the gameplay? Somehow they took a battle system that's supposed to feel like dialing in quick combos and made it agonizingly slow. Not to mention dungeons that were so bad, they were among the worst in the genre, until these same guys made Xenosaga. It only goes surface level with the things its story is supposed to be "deep" about, as an actual game it's a shit experience to play through... but like I said, fantastic soundtrack, completely worth downloading so you don't have to associate it with all of the bad that's actually in playing the game.
Finished Xenogears twice around 1998-2002. It's definitely a classic to me, introduced me to some interesting ideas beyond gaming.

The only thing I don’t like about this game that keeps me from ever going back to finish it is just how slow the scrolling text is.
I finished Xenogears when it was released. Didn't regret it.
The story is great, but will be hard to follow for some people looking for simple plots.

I always really wanted to get into Xenogears, but it just never clicked. I love the style, though.

With all the RPG games I've played, it's extremely hard to play a "classic". Maybe the remake I'll go back to Xenogears.

back in 1999, i played Xenogears but when the time i switched to Disc 2, it wouldn't read and play. FML. I hope they do a remaster of this someday
