The third movement is so incredible and quite unique for this era. I dearly hope more of Cannabich is discovered and recorded. It’s so vitally important to this era of music.
Yes, it is, isn't it. A Menuetto II, really, and an unusually extended exploration by Cannabich of a musical motif from his (overly?) fertile brain -- until, that is, the wonderful shift into presto at the very end. Although these performers are to be commended for having undertaken this recording, Cannabich's genius for orchestral color had to await the present-day maturity of the early music movement, and a performance by any one of a dozen of the best of such bands would be welcome indeed. - -
