My question is after child birth when should a mother be started on contraceptives and which among the common ones is preferred?

Soon after birth actually, usually progestin only can be started as they don’t interfere with lactation alternatively you can use non hormonal contraceptives, in most cases the assumption is if the woman is exclusively breastfeeding there will be lactational amenorrhea for the around 4 months or so but usually we start them on contraceptives in our setting 6 weeks post partum I did in-depth videos on contraception in obgy playlist
