    My Dad had a fold-out yardstick like the one this blacksmith uses. I haven’t seen one like that in a long time. Brings back good memories of my Dad ❤️

    There's a certain *irony* in 'dirtying' the surface of the perfect ball, arc welded onto a rod, on the belt sander so that the surfaces of swaged pieces eventually have an 'authentic' look.

      I got to show my grandchildren videos like yours! They grew up with the reality that if you want something or if you need something you do not even have to leave your house, it is brought to your door.
      It‘s not that long ago that if something broke or was needed you had to make it yourself or if you were lucky to have a blacksmith within a days travel and were „rich“ enough to pay him, you could have it custom made for you!
      Keep the good videos coming to educate our offspring!

    Another innovation on your tool great have done things similar to that but never any forging . But at the beginning seeing that hack saw going and the that short tuff blade, reminded me of my first knife dad made for me but he let me help it was in the 50s but cannot for the best of me remember the year probably mid 50's . Any way still carry that knife to this day great memories of good times as you will have when your 75 . Happy Trails young man

      Getting an actual lathe may be a thing put off due to cost ... but if you like DIY stuff, you can make a spring/pull lathe fairly easily, loads of videos on that on youtube (just follow along), technique does look a bit different due to the drive mechanism, but the end results are pretty much the same. And a spring/pull lathe can be build for a fraction of the cost.

    Great to see you using the skew chisel. They take a bit of practice but are so good to use. Most TH-cam turning videos are scraper from start to finish. Real turning should use the cutting edge of the correct chisel for the job, resulting in a great surface finish.

    I don't want to be sycophantic, but for me you are the man, your skills are excellent and I really enjoy watching your channel. I do wonder though as you are a relatively young man and I'd bet you just didn't pick them up at night school.
    May I present you with a challenge. Refusal won't offend.
    Could you forge anything, I don't care what it is, without using modern power tools, from the beginning to end. I'll forgive you starting with stock material.
    While there are many older gentlemen showing forging clips on YT who may remember some older methods they still use power tools. I believe that with your skill set you could be the man to do it.

    • @torbjornahman
      @torbjornahman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure why this important to you? The blacksmith has always strived to do hard work easier either by altering the method or using tools of some kind. And the big difference back then was that the smith almost never worked alone. There were always manpower at hand who could swing a sledge. That's why power hammers are so valuable today when you need 4 hands...
      That said I have several projects of that kind already:

      Thanks for the reply. I do realise that we all, in no matter which industry we work, want to make things easier. Many years ago when dinosaurs ruled I did repairs to old gates and railings obviously made when there were no electric welders and electrical power tools and I marveled at the workmanship put into them and the expertise the people who made them must have had to do it. The repairs never did seem to blend in and needed copious layers of paint to hide our hideous efforts. It was just an idea, and I thought that you might be the man up for some retro / vintage forging to entertain and enlighten this fan.
      I'll settle for your suggested posts. Thanks anyway.

    • @torbjornahman
      @torbjornahman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the workmanship of old gates and railings are often mind blowing, but as I said before the work was seldom the result of a single smith.

    • @wjf0ne
      @wjf0ne 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not even that Sir, I just imagine something as simple as a pair of scissors that someone made prior to electricity. We take too much for granted, whereas our forebears put so much more importance on what we now consider simple items as they probably cost a fortune to buy before mass production and had to be looked after.
      I suppose that was what I was after, for you to show folk just how much work an ancient smith had to do to service the ironwork needs of his community.
      Do you ever wonder what the first iron worker used as a hammer? ;-)

    • @torbjornahman
      @torbjornahman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      :) Yes we take much for granted, for sure. It would have been cool to show the entire process from bog ore to final "something" , with every tool in the chain. Making fuel... building forge... finding the right first stone to use as a hammer... etc...

    That would make a really good bell donged, or a door pull, or a socket handle, grab handle in a bathroom or a chest handle.

    Another great build Torbjörn! Enjoyed the sequencing to get to the finish line and didn't get you were building 2 from one billet...got me. ;-) Man your lathe skills are like everything else you do...a natural, with practice of course. Thank you Sir! Love the interlude of geese and Kronoberg Castle, nice!

      Thanks!! I have a lot of practice to do on the lathe. Especially the business of switching hands...

    I love the way to build tools and I think that you are good at machining. I also make pieces and for this I recognize your work. Angel from Spain

    Very cool tool! Kept me wondering until the very end! Thank-you for all the great videos. I love that you take a break to appreciate nature, it creates a nice balance. Kudos for your consistent use of safety gear - you take the time to work safely and protect your health. I know Sweden has its share of problems just like the rest of the world, but watching this is a pleasant respite from the political and social chaos here in the United States.
