This is debate that's been going on for a while now whether or not loose or tight trucks are better. Nyjah Huston and Daewon Song are on the complete opposites side of the spectrum when it comes to their trucks. My back bushing disintegrated so I decided to experiment with riding with only one bushing for two weeks. I was surprised by what happened to my skating in those to weeks.
Loose enough to carve, tight enough to prevent most wheelbite... The Goldilocks zone... depends on individual weight, wheel diameter, bushing durometer, and truck height... I'd say to "experiment with different durometer bushings" before removing them altogether...

This is how I tighten my trucks because wheelbite drives me crazy.

I actually really strongly prefer my wheels be able to touch the board. Having that hard stopping point helps with consistency on a lot of single truck grinds for me.

I skated for years and never progressed very fast until I started skating with a friend that would ride with loose trucks at high speeds. I started doing the same and I got good fast, the loose trucks definitely help you build up your ankles and balance as well as riding a lot faster.
Skaters that ride fast typically ride tighter trucks. I used to ride with tight trucks and personally I can't stand loose trucks, but now I can't stand right trucks either. I keep a perfect balance.

I was skating with Daewon today and he was throwing down. I saw his front truck wiggle around as he skated but was in full control. I think it gives you a feather touch balance that makes you a better skater. I'm loosing my trucks to gain that balance to make me a better skater.👍
Tighter tricks help you start tricks, looser trucks help you land tricks. In my opinion

loose are better cuz you can turn easily on them, but you need more training and balancing on it
ABUAL5ULD I agree you can get used to anything with enough practice but sometimes experimenting with tightening and loosening can help you learn different things

Tighter trucks means you can pop the board more consistently but you're at the mercy of however the board lands. Loose trucks means that you need to have your balance on point to pop, but you can land them a bit more awkward and still roll away. I prefer them loose myself. I think it helps me get a lot better at weight distribution and board control.

Daewon has 2 bushings in the rear, just shaved down a little bit, the front truck has one bottom bushing and double washers in place of the top bushing.
I feel like tight trucks help you get wayyy more pop, or at least for beginner/intermediate skaters
Yeah I think they make it easier but some of the popiest skaters skate loose so I think it comes down to preference

I think important with regard to tightening of trucks, be carefull not to break bushings because of fighting, Importsnt RULE I heard I think probably is correct some say first when you have new trucks dont tighten them at all at first until they have broken in ( broken mean truck have adjusted to way you in specific lean and turn on your skateboard how tight you turn also with your weight or what ever) for the new bushings to have been used before using them if tightening immediately when you get I think you risk to destroy them or make their lifespan much shorter. This funny happen I recently bought a "used" complete board from one guy who sold his board on a ebay kind of site in my country trucks was like totally new and board also have almost no scratches and very small ammount of racer tail so very little used but one ifn bushin was having a crack in it strange for such new little used board but actually bot strange : ) as beginner probably dmhad tightened trucks first with out riding board first and bushings got destroyed at first. I heard bones bushings would not need to be broken in if that's correct also they say same about krux even tho I heard complains about how krux trucks turns but also opposite some are also fans of krux way of turning even I'm little skeptic to extent and think other trucks on market some may like more but I dont know for sure what most like and think also alot into preference in way of turning and style/ skate type deciplaine youbmost skate for what most probably will be good for you.

Loose trucks enforce an ideal balance, but as much as I love Daewon, you could just ride your bushings loose enough to wheel bite hard and you're golden. No point in bending and breaking kingpins all over the place and having to deal with the death rattle.
Another fun thing about loose trucks is that you can salvage weak 180ies without pivoting. And pinch, obviously.
Ollieing gaps and stairs is scary as shit with loose trucks wheelbite gets ur ass
I got back into skating after a 7 year break, I used to skate super tight trucks now I skate them pretty loose, I'd never thought about the bicycle analogy, thanks I think it's going to be very useful for how I think in terms of approaching tricks.
Yeah if I'm trying to learn a trick it'll help to go just a little faster than I normally would and it helps a lot.
Yo me too. 6 year break. Started 2 months ago.
So here's my 25+ year experienced opinion. When I first started skateboarding I had my trucks exactly how I got them. Over time they broke in and eventually got sloppy loose. Next set of trucks I got I couldn't ride them because they were too tight and didn't feel right so I learned how to adjust them to be looser and made them sloppy loose. As I got older I learned about bushing hardness and bought some of the red Independent bushings which were the softest they made at the time. I put those in and was able to tighten them til they weren't sloppy and still manage to skate them because there was less resistance. This actually helped me skate better because they were more stable because there was less slop in the assembly but there was plenty of turnability. So softer bushings tightened until the nylock is engaged was the perfect goldilocks zone for me.
That’s exactly how I feel about my current bushings I ride them pretty loose but I like the stability of bushings.
@@localjoe it definitely feels more secure than riding with missing bushings or sloppy loose. I really don't think I lost any turning with the softer bushings but I definitely gained stability so it's pretty much a win win trade.
John Sidwell yeah because I mean you can wheel bite with any set up but the right setup can give you the full range of turning without having the instability. Definitely a sweet soot
How do you stop your bushings from breaking. I got soft bones bushings and they broke after a couple of hours of use. The medium ones lasted me way longer but they're starting to break on me now so I had to switch to some spare hard ones i got for free
@@urbanumbra6170 I find the bones bushings plastic inserts just break and they come unattached.
I found popping to be really hard you have to be right in the center of the tail EVERY TIME , you can’t be lazy at all , once you’ve popped though landing on loose trucks is nice cause there is so much more give you can regain balance and swerve out on a not so good landing , plus loose trucks are like a shock absorber you can run over stuff and not stick and pump off anything and gain a lot more speed especially in bowls
Loose trucks are more difficult at first but after a very short while you find that it's MUCH easier to ride. Most skaters view loose trucks as a handicap but it's honestly a hidden cheat code.
When I first started I liked loose but I couldn’t stay balanced then went tight but went mid cause it didn’t feel comfortable
I feel like most people start tight but end up in the middle as well.
There's no debate it's up to people's personal preference, which is determined by your style and your physical attributes.
Just switched from bones medium to soft. Loving it so far

@@localjoe I like it better because the turning radius is so much tighter on them. I don’t have to fight the bushing.
As a kid I remember riding really loose trucks but now that I started riding again I have to have em tight. Even changed my bushings to the Indy blacks and it has made it easier for me to progress.

I also share the opinion that super loose bushing missing trucks are for experienced skaters that want to take their skating to a new level...

I feel like it does but it's just because loose trucks flop around so its hard for them to line up just right.
I’ll say this, if you skate tensor without the top bushing, it’s still skatable. Did it for a day. Went back to top bushing and had to loosen the hell out of it to be comfortable
I like probably med-tight. Loose enough to carve/turn without tic-tacking, tight enough to not wheel bite. I’m a big guy 6’3, 235, and I ride big wheels 56mm usually.

I tried the same thing daewon did, medium tightness on front trucks, both washers on top of back truck and very loose on back truck, and i fell in LOVE. The front helps stabilize the board while the back trucks makes for the sharpest turns possible. Its like the perfect match

Cool vid but do it right next time, medium back truck with both bushing , front truck bottom bushing top double washer turned 7 threads deep on kingpin , in addition be careful in the ocean!
Riding loose trucks has definitely helped me get better balance but tighter always feels more stable. I usually keep my bushings medium and am constantly switching trucks.
Also those are the Bones medium bushings. I skate the same ones.
Yeah I believe they are but the homie at the skate shop said he liked them so I went with them but he put them in for me so I never saw the packaging. was just trusting him haha
Personally, I've always liked em tight. But I'm trying to run them less tight by using harder bushings. If I can adjust I will drop to medium bushings. But you know.. The looser they are the harder I find everything.
I just wanna say I really like the videos and that they both motivated me and showed me new things I would love to try new things
When I skated in my early teens I ran the tightest trucks known to man. Front trucks locked up tight as they could get without making the bushings ooze and rear loosened back a quarter turn to only allow really fine steering by leaning. Adjusting direction by any more than a few degrees and you had to lift the front up so you could pivot the tail.
Recently started to try to skating again after well over a decade and figured I'd try to run looser trucks since that is what everyone else does and I'm relearning from square one and figured old bad skate habits wouldn't be retained. Can't do it. Rides fine but even doing simple flip tricks or ollieing off a curb landing on a wobbly boi is tough! On went the Bones hards and cranked em down. Dunno how people run mid and looser.
I think that loose is fine, I like the way the board zig-zags when loose, but last time I landed a 180 it did wheelbite and stopped, I was tossed off. I Guess it is on me but it would have been otherwise smoother if I had had tight trucks. To some extent it may be a matter of personal preference and habit. Daewon trucks look impossible to ride, but he is awesome and so is Nyja with his stone-made bushings.
Hey, so I've loosened my trucks (new long boarder) but how will I know it's ok enough for the trucks to not just fall off mid ride!? Haha
So i don't long board but I'm guessing its about the same. As long as the bolt you loosened is secure you should be fine. It shouldn't fall off but if your worried I'd just keep an eye on it between riding to make sure the nut isn't moving until your confident its secure. Hope that helps!

If you tighten them til the nylock in the nut is holding the threads on the bolt they will not come undone. If you make the end of the bolt even with the end of the nylock nut you're locknut is fully engaged and doing it's job. There is nylon inside the end of the nut and this is what grabs the threads of the bolt.
I skate with tight and loose trucks like in the middle but very loose I never tried that

Daewon rides his front truck with two washers on top with no bushing and then a bushing and one washer on bottom. His back truck is stock

Dewd, Daewon rides the front one loose, not the back one. You'll find most people ride the front looser than the back. Small detail for you 🤦♂️
Matt Rodriguez and Sergio Santoro rides both trucks loose but Daewon performs his manuals on his tighter truck never loose it’s weird but sick I ride both trucks loose personally helps with vert and riding over terrigenous sediment on the streets

for me i bought some ace hard bushings because the standard medium ones are splitting and also when i land tricks sometimes the board will turn my foot inward and that fucking hurts so much idk if thats because i need to land better but i think im gonna loosed the hard bushings
I want to believe Daewon that that's the setup he rides day in day out but then I wonder is there something he's not telling us, does he have different setups for different days? Like is there more to the story that we are just not hearing about?

Loose and tight trucks have different aspects of tricks. Usually people i know who can pressure flip skate tight, while some that treflip easily, skate loose.
The bushings are bones medium hardcore blacks
Two different styles of skating. Cant skate at Nyjahs level of risk with that loose truck setup.
i find with tight trucks sometimes they get “paralyzed” and i’m stuck turning on one side. no problem with loose ones

Medium/Hard is the best try kickflip nosemanual on a loose board and then again on a medium/hard board i guarantee you the first 10 attempts on the looseboard you will get instantly wheelbites and get stucked i ride for 19 years now and loose looks cooler and more natural but i think for espacially technical manual tricks medium or hard is the best if u want to ride vert ramps than more loose-medium
Some what loose trucks are good for me because I tighten them my board tends to pull frontside

My trucks use to he so right I broke over 6 or 7 kingpins on independentl, silver but mostly independent trucks. You don't have to believe it but yeah.
And if you don’t want wheel bite, get some riser pads sucker I ride the loose bushings possible with one thread on my trucks and I’ve been skating since 1980 learn to carve
In my opinion loose trucks offer more board control, which if that's your thing-can help you land clean technical tricks....more like getting into salad grinds/ crooks and things like that and also offers more ease of flipping, and popping the board. Tight trucks are what I skate, and all of my tricks are done while I am going fast as fck.
To elaborate, tighter trucks make it easier to go really BIG in my opinion...whereas loose are more about crazy technical combos(daewon song).
Here's the thing about daewon... He doesn't even ride the brand of trucks that he owns, so is there more to the story, i wonder..

It's silly it's like driving a car with no suspension. Let's be honest if a pro or two was not doing it this conversation would be much more one sided. However regardless of rank we should call stupid out as stupid. Medium truck setting is great even loose is ok but taking out the bushing is the stupidist thing I have ever come across and most likely came out of certain skaters wanting to stand out and be different in the skate community nothing else.
I think heavier guys have to ride tight trucks, never seen a heavy guy (>180 lbs) shred on loose trucks ever
