  • GERMANY: Green electricity slump! Gloomy times for the energy transition - expert warns
Germany is currently experiencing a so-called “dark doldrums”: wind and sun are hardly supplying any electricity, which massively increases dependence on fossil fuel power plants and expensive electricity imports. Industry representatives such as Christian Seifert are warning of increasing bottlenecks, especially in winter, when the demand for electricity increases due to heating systems and electric cars. According to Seifert, Germany's energy supply needs a “second pillar” alongside renewable energies - controllable power plants to avoid supply bottlenecks. The CDU/CSU is also calling for a return to nuclear power, while the government is backing a further expansion of renewables.
