I remember when I first started playing RoC back in 2002 and I finally got to the Orc campaign. Meeting Cairn Blood Hoof and the Tauren. Man I thought that was the coolest thing ever. Always been a fan of Minotaurs since I read the dragon lance books; Legend of Humar and Land of the Minotaurs. Was so pumped to play as Tauren! Still one of my favorite units in Wc3.
Back when the smallest thing mattered, I also remember the campaign when the Night Elves was this mysterious race under that Grom campaign were we had to gather lumber. But meeting Cairne for the first time was also one of my highlights!
There is this old and forgotten mechanic I first saw in Knights and Mechants. When 2 units engage in melee combat, they enter "duel mode" And can no longer be controlled. It was meant to simulate that a fighter in this situation would simply not listen to his superiors, but accidentally it removed the biggest micro road block to RTS: in fight micro. It had one big drawback though: Loosing enemy had almost no ability to comeback since they lost all their units. (this could be fixed with something like "retreat" command or scroll of town portal or sth)
Please post more 1v1. 4v4 is certainly fun but nothing beats the ultimate test of the Grubster vs his next victim! Thanks for the content all the best to you and yours!
I agree that a true RTS has mainly 3 parts to master. Eco, logistics and unit management (micro/macro) The difficulty in this in SC2 did not make me dislike the game. Rather it made me respect those who can manage that. Most players just want to win and have fun. Learning by losing is not a thing anymore, sadly
I just want them to give as mapping keys like on starcraft 2 where you can use hotkeys for specific purposes like pressing key to a specifc expansion on the map instead of us using custom mapping hotkeys
The thing is it's not just motor skill sometimes. If reducing the need for micro also reduces the need for more active decision-making, for example, then it's also removing or dumbing down an intellectual component from the game. I can use an example from fighting games where I have no issue with them making the execution on things like combos easier, but I have a serious issue with them dumbing down zoning or footsie options in neutral to make it easier for more casual players to get in and land hits. That kind of stuff is actually harmful to the integrity of the game and significantly lowers the intellectual ceiling of the game, whereas with combos, it's kind of whatever, since that's just a singleplayer skill to me.
U rarely face Tauren+Walk., cuz long tech & Orc tier 1&2 strength. But if u face it, only at the end of a battle u realize that nothing went down. As Orc, fist time I used it I was shocked how I won & how few units I lost. A Tauren has greatest melee HP (-Giants) if Im not mistaken. So 3-4 revives are huge. + endless walkers.
One of the most op units cuz every tauren does splash dmg.. So with shamans and taurens and some anti airs u can destroy every army. Immagine taurens shamans spirit link from walkers doctors heal and some anti air like bats or hhs. The strongest army.
I find it hard to sympathize with the APM rant. Have to click stuff quickly is distinct from having to make fast strategic decisions. Grubby's APM is ~300 but that doesn't mean he is making 300 difficult strategic decisions per minute, he's mostly doing muscle-memory boring crap. It can still easily be a fast real time strategy if the maximum needed APM is 110. The optimal rules for a game is one where the user doesn't have to do stuff that's just automatic; if there's no choice for the user to make then the game shouldn't demand that the user pointlessly press a button.
Yes. I can think much faster than I can execute things. I know the solution is practice more. My hands are slow and muscle memory is one of my weaknesses. It is a real thing. In karate I have a hard time learning katas. Ballroom dancing for me is harder than integral math. So my progress is painfully slow amd if I dont play for a month my apm is back under a 100. So I also lose my progress very quickly. Best is of course a high apm+ good control+ making good strategic decisions. But not everybidy has all 3.
APM take is a bad take in my opinion. LoL doesn't require high APM but there is tremendous level of tactical depth there. Another example might be playing a slow, clunk hero in Dota 2. Positioning, spell usage, item usage, where to go, timing all these can be done very nicely with 120 APM. That doesn't mean they are easy decisions. There is still a chess game being played within the game whilst having 120 APM
Someone saying Tauren are useless has to be a troll, they are literally the strongest melee units in the game when grouped against any other group of unit in the game 5 Tauren vs 5 any oher units, Taurens will slam them like crazy, once they have that upgrade at least.
I actually think that low APM game sounds amazing, make it non pro apm level, with way more strategic options that counter eachother and mesh in interesting ways. To me that would make me feel like an actual general instead of some sweaty tryhard grunt telling every unit to take every step. Kind of the point of these games, no?
Thats what XCom and other such games are for. Point of RTS games are "real time" strategy. Part of strategy in real time is being able to think and act quickly. If you remove that element, then you run out of things to do like Grubby said. If you dont have things to do then what are you strategizing? And if you are able to strategize the whole team, then of course APM will become a factor in your skill.
Time is a resource in RTS. In a turn based game it is not. Unless it is competetive chess where you jave a clock. A higher apm means you can use the time resource better and have fsster reaction time. I love civ games and hybrids like total war as well as rts like warcraft 3 and starcraft.

ToD is like the Vader to Grubby's Obi wan. Always trying to surpass the master but always one step behind.
He'd rage so hard reading this lol. Always Vegeta, never Goku.

1:30 nah, it can be intensely intellectual. but ya in general the 'skill' is motor skill but regardless it can be fun with or without

Im so worried and excited about Stormgate, dont like the vibe/theme they are going for but maybe its gonna be super good mechanically.
Yeah, the vibe doesn't attract me that much. Let's hope gameplay saves it!
