  • I #carved a whale out of #epoxy and #wood. I used various woodworking tools to powercarve this whale out of 11.5 gallons of epoxy resin. This is one of my most unique sculptures to date and one that features a tremendous amount of woodworking and epoxy resin working. Follow along to watch this whale come to life!

If I commissioned a project like this, with this much time and effort, and the artist STILL made time to make me something super special, that thing being sourced from leftovers from the actual project...that’s so meaningful man. That would mean a lot to me and I hope your clients have appreciated as much as they should.

I was carving it for a long time and I couldn't believe how hard is to carve out "the right things" to make it look lifelike. I know exactly how a hand should look like, but seeing it in a piece of wood is a whole another thing. Then grabbing a dremel and start shaving off everything that is not a hand is a pure witchcraft! But it turned out quite nice, taking into the account my abilities.

Very inspiring. My best friend "the whale" had conniptions, seeing the making of a whale sculpture that ended up with curved wooden "ribs". Too close to memories of old wooden whaling boats and all that, but I told him it was a symbol of the whales overcoming the old technology, and I think he's fine now.
Given the price of Epoxy, I might have gone for some sort of central wooden core, with the wood radiating out at different lengths, guided by a bent wire armature, and then building a compound curve female mould out of rings of plaster or cheap poly resin , painted with release coatings.
Looks like I will need to do my own video and put my ideas where my mouth is :-)

I couldn't stop worrying about all that toxic fine dust around and in your house though. I also hope that this brand and type of epoxy doesn't turn yellow after a few years in sunlight.

Beautiful work! I love the use of penetrating epoxy to suppress bubbles long before the bulk pour!
Another way to address your epoxy wastage challenge would be to build your normal mold, and carve or build up displacement blocks to fill in the bulk of the wastage areas. Foam or wood can be used, just make sure they're well secured. The advantage to this is that you don't have to worry about the mold failing catastrophically and spilling all your epoxy out. Both methods are used in various types of casting. What you did is similar to a custom mold tool for laying up composites. Using plugs to fill voids is used in metal sand castings when a void needs to be cast in the middle of a part.

First off, incredible work as always.
Second, I think I might be alone in this but I find sanding to be very therapeutic.
I use a full face PAPR mask, some good noise cancelling headphones with an audiobook and just let myself get lost in the work.
Watching a piece slowly transform from a rough carve to polished finish is probably my favorite part of the process.

@@therealgoody It's really worth that much, the thing is that it's not something you just make on a whim then sell to a random person for that sort of cash. This sort of statue is done on commission and they are unique sculptures, that always means a ton of cash. To be fair to the artist, the material's cost and labor cost alone are pretty high to begin with with this taking potentially hundreds of hours between materials prep, cutting, sanding and polishing. It's an incredibly low volume high margin type of business. Hell, a family member of mine was working construction/flooring work on an upscale client's home and they brought in a set of furniture that looked real nice so the boss remarked that it looked expensive... Turns out that it was worth $70,000 USD. They couldn't believe it as they thought they looked more like 5 to 10 grand at most and the most baffling thing is that the client did not feel cheated at all.
Could it be made cheaper? Sure you could buy a commercially designed 3D model of that whale (Or do it yourself if you got the skills) do the whole wood cutting and resin casting like they did and put the resulting block on a big CNC machine, you end up with the same rough sculpture but the final sanding and polishing is still done by hand. It's still going to be expensive just not 18k USD.
