The example I provided is translated to "may þórr (thor) hallow" so it's likely that the sword says "May Tyr hallow." It is a blessing, not necessarily saying "blesses" or "blessed" in younger futhark.

      Thanks.
Also, looking back, it might be related to the old norse word "Víg" wich means fight or murder.
Or the icelandic "víg" that means killing.
You know, because it's a sword.

    • @christopherrowley7506
      @christopherrowley7506 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@fronckiewcz 'vígi' is third person present subjunctive of 'vígja' which means something like 'to bless, hallow, or sanctify'. The present subjunctive is often called 'óskháttur' and is used in constructions like this to express desire or an indirect command. Hence the "May Týr bless" translation.

Hi! I just got my first sword. It is "viking" sword from Cold steel. It is marketed as "razor sharp" mine was not. With some sharpening i got it really sharp, and it holds that edge, even after quite heavy cutting. Fittings are tight still, nothing rattles after use. I think I am gonna buy more swords in the future. Thanks for your channel and thanks for information and inspiration. Greetings from Finland.

To answer your last phrase: I certainly found it helpful. Very funny to see how those things you don't consider accurate, become actually useful to me. I'm about to get one for way less than $300, and the hilarious bit is that your video convinced me exactly because of those things you didn't like: Edge type, because that means I'll grind the edge I want; lack of distal taper, doesn't bother me because 1.2kg with that PoB is more than fine, and also, given the general handling of those swords, I believe we could say that viking era swords were more of a kind of... sword-shaped axes. Hah!
Cheers mate, and thanks a lot for the review! :-D
Ps- The other sword you mentioned, the Ronin one, yes, it's indeed awesome, usefulness-wise.

I heard a rumour that grimfrost has been reselling depeeka swords, after contacting both grimfrost and depeeka im afraid to say...there's truth to it. Ibwas rather angry...their tyr sword was a good sword from all I could tell from owning one, probably the worst decision they made to get rid of that and only stock cheaper more questionable swords of questionable origin. I made several suggestions to them including buying sword blanks from the UK and having a bronze worker of their own make fittings, they assured me they already had plans to bring new stock in. I waited and saw the two new swords they got, even bought another, its just blunt practice stuff. I was gutted:/

One thing that I am bummed about is the mix of opinions on whether or not the vikings wore gambesons or any type of padded armor, I was looking forward to how those looked on top of the knee length tunics and under the shor tsleeve maille.
      TLDR:
Thank you for the tips, especially regarding the shoes, looking forward to putting it together!

Its not that the futhark doesn't have a "V" its that that the rune for V and U are the same rune, which is the case for a lot of runes of the younger futhark. Like how J, E and I are the same rune etc.

As someone who doesn't know much about swords, it's interesting to hear how you "can't expect historical accuracy from a cheap sword."
Like, swords were worse back then, they barely had steel. So wouldn't the worse material of the past be cheaper/easier to make?
A 440C sword didn't exist back then, but like pig iron did (I'm not saying 440C is a good choice for swords, it's just an example of steel).

Someone hypothesized that viking swords are not meant to be used in fancy controlled cuts and slashes. He believes the shield binds up the opponent's shield to open up the leg or other body part that can be cut at from the shoulder (many swords have been called Leg Biter. Perhaps this is why). I'm sure you know how to test the handling for that purpose.

Ok it’s almost exactly identical to the Maldon sword in both design and construction. They both have the peened pomel, the Maldon sword without runes, the Ashdown with. The grips are similar in that they are both straight instead of tapered but feature a different leather wrap. The guards are very similar and both have been straight cut and filled with black epoxy instead of being profiled to match the blade. The blades again are similar just the Ashdown being polished whilst the Maldon is black. The Maldon is a little lighter and comes razor sharp and hardened, though both feature similar scabbard though the Maldon is black.
My point? Its my contention that these swords are the same, or at least made in the same factory and just differ in the cosmetic finish.
