Thanks for not giving up Ray. If a mechanic with a hoist and all the tools has trouble, imagine the poor person attempting this at home on their driveway. 🤦♂
Yep but also added difficulty level by someone somewhere forgetting to add the "remove engine" part of the instructions. The smallest detail can have a big effect on a process.
I watch Ray's videos. I'm a 70 yo woman who can barely get around anymore and will never do any car repairs herself. However, I know where to look and what to look for, thanks to Ray. And I feel a little more confident that mechanics will not be able to take advantage of me with their fast talking. I did do a tune up all by myself on an 70s car and it started and ran well.
Near the end, you started to remind me of my father, who worked on all our vehicles and also restored small outboards as a hobby. His most epic loss of patience occurred in the mid-70s in Murrells Inlet, SC. He had rebuilt a small Johnson motor someone had discarded, maybe 4 or 5 HP, and it ran pretty good, and he/we got some good use out of it. One year, we brought it on vacation with our 14' aluminum boat. One day, he battled for over half an hour on the dock of our rented cottage to try to start the thing, and after sitting and resting for a few minutes, he suddenly unbolted the motor and threw it in the inlet. Who knows; after 50 years it may still be there in 10-12 feet of water. Anyway, I admire your patience!!
Ray, you are one of the few people who make good content, somethings we learn from, sometimes with humor and sometimes with a warning tone, but overall a real pleasure to watch. 👍
Things that makes Ray's channel special: -his funny, off-beat humor -clean language -he's not afraid to admit mistakes -his stream of consciousness narration makes it personal My only requests: more Wife Unit and maybe get a mic for Dave when you team-up on a job.
I really really liked this Ford Ranger video series sofar. Why? It really states things aren't so easy as it looks like in most video's, mostly its a pain getting bolts out. Or things disconnect in one piece. This part really shows you have to respect mechanics, doing everything to save people a lot of money. Finding workarounds, handling sitbacks etc etc. This is the real life of a mechanic. And Yes i love to see some live footage from time to time. Keep up the good work Ray. Don't bother how a video was taped, it was taped and shown and we loved it.
Yeah people will show taking one bolt out and a cut and then holding whatever they just took off. It dosent show the heads sheering off the bolts / having to torch them or tools breaking e.t.c. all the omissions are terribly annoying. Saying its a 30 minute job but when you go to do it well yeah 4 hours later lol.
I’m an old Ford mechanic. Here’s a tip to keep the plate that fits on the dowel pins between the engine and flywheel from coming off the dowel pins. Put the plate in place and then take a sharp round punch and and right up against the dowels smack the plate with the punch. It mashes the metal plate into the dowels and it’ll stay put while you reassemble. You can’t show old Fords much tender loving care cause they will break your heart every time.👍
Defeatism is a real disease for mechanics and as I too have suffered through several events like this is only solved one way: just as you did, Ray, by pushing through and seeing the project to its completion. Good job on the very difficult task. Really enjoy the realism in your videos and salve for the next! Great job buddy! Hope you and the family unit are still doing well! God bless!
My 74 Monte Carlo had a black hole where the seat belts came up through the seats. Anything dropped would somehow go right in the opening. I totaled the car one day and decided to cut the bottom liner out. Found all sorts of goodies and we had a magnificent weekend.
I experienced many a ridiculous American car engineering gaffe that made me realize that they don't consider the guy repairing the thing. I repaired cars from age 14 to 26, then decided that killing myself for a basic living was not for me. At that point I enrolled in a college outside of Chicago that had an aviation maintenance program......... Two years, aircraft mechanics license then 32 years working for a major airline........ THE BEST THING I EVER DID ! To heck with working on American cars.
I found when encountering a frustrating situation is to stop before making things worse then coming back to it the next day or days. It gives time to clear the mind, reevaluate, gives a new perspective and different approaches to the problem.
Hey Ray. Living the dream here in Nova Scotia Canada. After 30 years as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and following the manufacture maintenance manuals you quickly realize that the manuals are written by the manufacturer to cover their A.. but luckily enough there’s usually a sentence somewhere among all the instructions the says as long as you meet the intent of the instructions you do not have to follow the manual step for step. Ie. you can do step 6 before step 3 ect. It comes from years of doing tasks to know the quickest way to complete said task. And the one thing I’ve learned is that no matter how shitty the job and frustrating youd do it all over again the next day. That’s how I know you love what you do. Stay true my friend. Love the Channel
Ray, Couple of suggestions: - 1. To stop the evil block to trans plate falling off the tubular dowels, maybe try wiring/tying them on through the holes with something like thin soft iron wire or nylon fishing line. Then when fitting the transmission those ties should shear off. 2. Dropping small parts on the floor is an absolute necessity for us mechanical guys. Gets worse the older you get...... Could try sealing around the bases of the lift with silicon so those small parts are forced to find somewhere else to hide. Welding neatly is easy when the parts are clean and clamped to a welding table. Having spent maybe 1,000 hrs. gas welding up rusty English cars decades ago, it isn't so easy to get a neat looking weld when you are lying on your back with the crap falling in your face. Another brilliant episode!
The most valuable lesson I have learned from Ray's videos is what type of vehicle I NEVER want to own, even if they are given to me. FYI when my brother owned one of these years ago, I told him the XLT stood for Xtra Lousy Truck lol.

I have had three Rangers over the last 40 years. Many of those early Rangers are still going strong and are amazingly reliable trucks. You don’t see many S-10’s and Dakotas left running. I pulled the 4.0 pushrod engine out of my ‘98 to rebuild it (without lifts and shop stuff) in 2023 and it was a beast to work on. But it is still going strong. Hey Ray, if there's a next time on 1 of these just pull the engine 😂. This job has been stressing 😬 me out bro. Here's some flowers 💐 🎉, I hope you feel better sir. LOL 😅
I have made two attempts at replacing the resistor pack on my 2008 Ranger. The reason I can't get it done is that it is so cold up here (well below freezing) that I can only get so far and then cannot feel my fingers. You can't thread small bolts into holes if you can't feel them. And unlike the 10 mm that made a bee line for the bottom plate of your life, my little bolts disappear into the dark abyss between the inner fender and the firewall. Since I need the truck to run, I just put things back and wish for warmer days. At least the fan works on high, because you sure need the heater up here in Toronto.
Somehow you felt today like a hobby-mechanic. Not enought tools, the wrong tolls, nothing works like it is intendet. Pure frustration. Looking forward for tuesday, seeing your win!
Ray you are fine, and I still watch because you Sir never give up... Thank you for your video's I have fun watching, and thinking how nice it is that I don't have to deal with this new garbage... Even though I own a newish piece of garbage... And soon I'll be knee deep in several repairs... Coolant leak, front, and rear brakes, possibly 1 if not 2 rear rotors...
Ray, brother, you so need a gas welding kit. Maybe not so much for welding, but they win 9 times out of 10 with rusted/seized on exhaust bolts. I’ve also used freon spray on stuck studs before now since it shrinks them just enough to crack them loose. Borrow a gas welder, and try just cooking those exhaust nuts.
Man I know you been having to maintain your composure turning wrenches on that ranger. Even though it's been an aggravating P.O.S. you still are doing/did a great job on it. It's commendable how you did'nt/do'nt compromise tne integrity of your work. I know a few mechanics that would have really cut the corners on that ranger and it still would have sat on the lot for a few more days. So Thank You! for all the work you put into your videos You are appreciated! Oh and Thank your wife as well. Lord knows she has to hear how you really feel about the Dander Ranger.....LOL! have a good weekend brother
Thats a real day for an Engineer ....some go good some fight back but never give up.....its the walk away regroup and come back fighting that wins the day .....thats what you do to stay above the bodge job bregade
I've done this job before at the dealership. I wasn't looking forward to removing the engine. When I lifted the vehicle up I found the owner had cut the cross member under the engine completely off. So I was very excited that I was going ro make money and not curse the day away lol.
this is the job that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friends, some people started watching it not knowing what it was, and they'll continue watching it forever just because..... this is the job that never ends .............. hahaha
Thanks for not giving up Ray. If a mechanic with a hoist and all the tools has trouble, imagine the poor person attempting this at home on their driveway. 🤦♂

lol! Ray you sing to yourself now! Back in the day, you used to get completely unchosen music blasting in the shop! The joy of your own business!
You gotta know this truck is laughing at you and laughing and laughing. You beat it but it is still laughing. Cheers from 🇨🇦
Somehow you felt today like a hobby-mechanic.
This car is fighting Ray every step of the way 😂
This was the greatest of all videos! 😎
The Ford Ranger song lives rent free forever in my head happily
Ray, brother, you so need a gas welding kit. Maybe not so much for welding, but they win 9 times out of 10 with rusted/seized on exhaust bolts. I’ve also used freon spray on stuck studs before now since it shrinks them just enough to crack them loose. Borrow a gas welder, and try just cooking those exhaust nuts.
You live and you win or you loose and you learn. Most successful people learn every constantly.
You DO know that loose is the opposite of tight, right?
And LOSE is opposite of win.
Now you learned every constantly.
I could really tell you loved this job.
Given the circumstances you made a great video good job Ray 👏
Ray man that Job keeps on giving good luck with the rest of it
Man I know you been having to maintain your composure turning wrenches on that ranger.
The live stream idea sounds awesome and then your wife unit could say hi at anytime and maybe even answer some questions of viewers
😮😊
Wow, that was complicated and labor intensive. Great video
So when you finally get to drive the truck out of the shop, you can do a victory dance. The truck did not defeat you.
Job well done brother
Looking forward to Part 8, Ray! 😉
Thats a real day for an Engineer ....some go good some fight back but never give up.....its the walk away regroup and come back fighting that wins the day .....thats what you do to stay above the bodge job bregade
It's a great series, REAL LIFE car repair.
Ray, these are the humps in the road. You know this but just don't always know that those who know, know this too. Well done fella.
Great videos Ray! Terrific editing!
it's nice to see ray breaking in his shop in working comfort
Ending the week on a Monday vibe...AH SNAP!!!
I understand your pain with this Ranger brother. Back in the 70s I had to replace a flexplate on my 65 Cadillac flat on the ground. By myself.
You touch it and you own it! Your own words 😢🇬🇧👍
Once the job is completed, it always feels better man! I get like that occasionally too but just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
You got more patience than me Ray. Great Video!
This is the greatest of all videos not everything goes well even for the great rainman
I've done this job before at the dealership. I wasn't looking forward to removing the engine. When I lifted the vehicle up I found the owner had cut the cross member under the engine completely off. So I was very excited that I was going ro make money and not curse the day away lol.
Doesnt it totally wreck the structural integrity?!
@@senffabrik4903Sure, but he "fixed" that engineering screw-up.
this is the job that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friends, some people started watching it not knowing what it was, and they'll continue watching it forever just because..... this is the job that never ends .............. hahaha
Wow . Unstoppable you are !!! 🫢🙏
Nice one ray there is hope for me yet thought there was only me screwed up 😂
Haha😂. In the FACE like Hangover 3.
